Japan on Sunday (January 8) tightened border controls further for travellers coming from mainland China. All such incoming travellers will now have to present proof of being Covid negative. The restrictions require that the Covid test should be conducted within 72 hours before departure.&nbsp;

The restrictions have been put in place with an aim of preventing the spread of highly transmittable strains of Covid as there is a massive surge in cases across China after the strict Zero-Covid policy restrictions were lifted.

The restrictions, however, currently do not apply to travellers coming from Hong Kong or Macau.

Other than that, all travellers from mainland China or those who were in the country within seven days before arrival in Japan will also have to take a PCR or high-quality antigen test when they arrive in Japan.

If a traveller tests positive on arrival in Japan and is showing symptoms, he/ she will have to quarantine for seven days. The quarantine period will be of five days if the traveller is asymptomatic.

Previously, those arriving from Hong Kong and Macau were restricted to four Japanese airports.

Meanwhile, China on Sunday, opened its borders for inbound travellers.&nbsp;

On Sunday, the first section of passengers to arrive under the new rules landed at airports in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, CGTN news agency reported.

There were 387 flyers on the flights from Singapore and Toronto. However, no one was subjected to COVID-19 tests or earlier mandatory five-day quarantine after arrival.

Japan makes Covid test must for travellers from China, orders quarantine for those found infected

A report has said that the number of people dying due to Covid in Japan over the last three months is around 16 times higher than during the same period last year. According to the report by the Mainichi Daily on Friday (December 30), there were 11,835 virus-related deaths from October 1 to December 29 compared to 744 deaths during the same period last year.&nbsp;

From December 23 to December 29 last year, the daily deaths were three (on December 23), zero (on December 24), one (on December 25), zero (on December 26), zero (on December 27), two ( on December 28) and four deaths (on December 29).&nbsp;

However, data released by Japan's health, labour and welfare ministry said that deaths over the same week this year have been — 315 (on December 23), 339 (on December 24), 306 (on December 25), 217 (on December 26), 271 (on December 27), 415 (on December 28) and 420 deaths (on December 29).&nbsp;

The Mainichi Daily said it also looked at Covid deaths by age group from August 31 till December 27 this year. During this period, 40.8% of the deaths were of people in their 80s; 34.7% of people in their 90s and 17% of people in their 70s. The report said that these three age brackets accounted for more than 92% of the deaths, adding that elderly people in Japan need to be very cautious about Covid.&nbsp;

Since the onset of the pandemic in 2020, Japan has recorded more than 27.7 million cases and 54,365 deaths, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). The current virus outbreak in Japan is the country's eighth wave of infections. Japan: Number of people dying due to Covid ‘16 times’ higher than last year, says report

Japan on Wednesday (December 28) reported a record number of deaths. The nation recorded 415 COVID-19-related deaths, which is its highest-ever count for a single day.

Japan reports its highest-ever tally of Covid related deaths, 415 in one day

Amid a spike in Covid cases in some countries, India on Saturday made RT-PCR tests mandatory for passengers coming from China, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Thailand. Speaking to news agency ANI, India's health minister Mansukh Mandaviya said "The RT-PCR test will be mandatory for international arrivals from China, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Thailand."

Mandaviya added on arrival if any passenger from these five countries is found symptomatic or tests positive for Covid, then he or she will be put under quarantine. The government's Air Suvidha form filling to declare the current health status will also be made mandatory for passengers coming from these countries.&nbsp;

Mandaviya asked the health ministers to personally monitor and review the preparedness of all infrastructure and ensure adequate stock of essential medicines in their respective states.&nbsp;

He also stressed the importance of public awareness campaigns regarding adherence to Covid-appropriate behaviour given the upcoming festive season in the country, ANI reported.&nbsp;

In the last 24 hours, India recorded 201 Covid cases and the overall recovery rate stands at 98.8%. The active cases stand at 3,397.&nbsp;

On Thursday, the Indian government decided to subject two per cent of the passengers arriving on international flights to random Covid tests starting from Saturday (December 24).

And yesterday, the country's civil aviation ministry asked airport operators to ensure compliance with government guidelines and told airlines to instruct their crew to lead and bring identified two per cent of international arriving passengers to the testing facility at the respective airports.
