<p>Donald Trump on Monday pledged to free people jailed for taking part in the 2021 attack on the US Capitol as one of his first actions if reelected, calling them "hostages."</p>

<p>The rioters — egged on by the then-president and fuelled by his false claims of voter fraud — stormed the seat of US democracy on January 6, 2021, in a bid to halt the transfer of power to Joe Biden.</p>

<p>Around 1,358 defendants have been charged in the 38 months since then, according to the latest figures from the Justice Department released last week. About 500 have been sentenced to prison terms.</p>

<p>Trump posted the comments on his Truth Social website, additionally promising to shut down the border with Mexico as part of his first acts, if reelected, without providing details.</p>

<p>"My first acts as your next President will be to Close the Border, DRILL, BABY, DRILL, and Free the January 6 Hostages being wrongfully imprisoned!" he wrote late Monday.</p>

<p>Trump has made previous comments about his hypothetical first day in office, vowing during a televised town hall in December not to act as a dictator except "other than day one."</p>

<p>Trump faces four criminal indictments, including two -- one federal and one in Georgia, — stemming from his attempts to overturn the election results after losing to Biden.</p>

<p>Trump is virtually assured of being the Republican presidential nominee now that his last remaining rival, Nikki Haley, dropped out of the race following his overwhelming wins in the primaries.</p>

<p>Similarly, in a separate courtroom in Washington, Richard Barnett, the man who was captured with his feet on a desk in US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office has also been convicted of disrupting Congress and other crimes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The 68-year-old man became one of the faces of the January 06 attack pictures.&nbsp;His picture displayed him leaning back in a chair propping his boots on the desk of one of the most powerful politicians in Congress, Pelosi.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Barnett was convicted of eight counts including Congress’s certification of the election, illegally entering the Capitol and more. He joined Trump’s supporters in crashing through the Capitol’s offices and halls to shut down the legislature.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Though, Barnett was not accused of conspiring against the government.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the court filing, he said, “I put a quarter on her desk even though she ain't f...ing worth it.”</p>

<p>He faces in total up to 47 years in prison.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Until now, amongst thousands of people who participated in what was called an insurrection to keep Trump in the White House, some 530 have been found guilty or pleaded guilty.</p>

<p>Over 950 individuals have been arrested for taking part in the riot, most on lessers charges of illegally entering the Capitol and causing property damages.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Additionally, 280 individuals have been charged with assaulting law enforcement officers and some 50 with high conspiracy crimes.&nbsp;</p>
