The initial investigation found that the attackers arrived at 7:00 am (local time), at the Cereso No. 3 state prison and opened fire, said El Paso Times, citing officials. The state police took back control, late Sunday, said the state prosecutor’s office and indicated that an investigation into the deadly attack is underway.&nbsp;

At Kabba, 28 out of the 294 inmates did not escape, the interior ministry said. It meant 266 had got away. The prison service had earlier put the number of fugitives at 240. &nbsp;

Extra armed guards have been deployed to beef up security at the prison, and urged the remaining escapees to turn in themselves within the next 24 hours, said the spokesman. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The prison authorities in Gujarat has planned to instal high-quality sensors in two central jails to alert officials about any underground movement and thwart bids by prisoners to escape by digging tunnels.&nbspThe move comes five years after some prisoners dug up a tunnel in the British-era Sabarmati Central Prison here.

“To foil attempts by inmates to escape by digging a tunnel, we have decided to install a ‘tunnel detection system’ in the Sabarmati central jail here and the Lajpore central jail in Surat district,” Additional Director General of Police, Prisons, T S Bisht told PTI.

“Gujarat is probably the first state in the country which is planning to implement such a system in jails,” he claimed, adding that only the Border security force (BSF) uses it as of now to detect tunnels near border areas.

The state government has allocated a budget of Rs 2.8 crore for the implementation of the project in these two jails, the official said.&nbsp As a part of the system, several sensors will be installed about three meters under the ground at regular intervals inside the jail, Bisht said.

“The sensor is capable of detecting underground vibrations and movements three metres up and down from the place where it is installed. Thus, it would cover a radius of six metres,” he said.

The sensors would transmit real-time signals on detecting any underground movement or vibrations due to the digging activity, according to the official.

“The entire web of sensors will be connected to a control room and an alarm. Apart from activating the alarm on detecting vibrations, the system would also send an SMS to the designated numbers of jail officials about the underground activity,” he said.

The system is expected to be first implemented near the ‘high-security area’ of Sabarmati jail by the end of this year, he said, adding that it would be installed in both the central prisons in Ahmedabad and Suratin a phase-wise manner.

The jail’s high-security area is the place where hardened criminals and those accused in bomb blast cases are lodged.

In March 2013, the prison authorities had found a 214-feet long tunnel inside the Sabarmati central jail.

The authorities had then alleged that the tunnel was dug up by some of the accused in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts case who were lodged in the jail.

To prevent Shawshank-style jailbreak, Gujarat prisons to go hi-tech

A fire allegedly set during an attempted jailbreak from Venezuelan police holding cells killed 68 people on Wednesday, the country's top prosecutor and an inmates' rights group said.

The blaze at the detention facility in Carabobo state is the latest in a series of deadly incidents in Venezuela's overcrowded jails.

"In light of the terrible events that took place in the Carabobo state police headquarters, where 68 people died in a presumed fire, we have appointed four prosecutors... to clarify these dramatic events," chief prosecutor Tarek William Saab said on Twitter.

Carlos Nieto, head of Una Ventana a la Libertad (A Window on Freedom), said that "some burned to death and others asphyxiated" after setting fire to mattresses and stealing a guard's gun in an attempt to break out.

The dead included two women thought to have been visiting the jail at the time of the incident, Nieto said.

Rafael Lacava, the governor of Carabobo state, expressed his "consternation" over the events but did not provide a toll.

"A serious and profound investigation has been initiated to find the causes and those responsible for these regrettable events," he said on Twitter, expressing solidarity with relatives of those who died.

Relatives of those being kept in the detention centre tried to force their way into Carabobo state police headquarters. After one officer was injured by a stone, the crowd was dispersed by police firing tear gas.

A video posted on Twitter showed dozens of people demanding information in front of police guarding the site.

"I am a desperate mother. My son has been here a week. They have not given any information," Dora Blanco told local media.

Venezuela's prisons suffer from dire overcrowding and a shortage of basic supplies, struggling under the deepening economic crisis that is gripping the once-wealthy oil-producing country.

Because of the lack of space in penitentiaries, convicts are often sent to police holding cells like the ones in Carabobo, meant to be used as temporary pens for suspects facing charges or court hearings, where detainees are supposed to spend a maximum of 48 hours.

Nieto's association estimated that the temporary detention centres were overfilled by five times their capacity.

"All the police stations in Venezuela are facing similar or worse conditions of overcrowding, lack of food and disease," he said.

The association said 65 people died last year in the holding cells due to violence, malnutrition or tuberculosis.

Two weeks ago, 58 detainees escaped holding cells on Margarita Island, a favoured tourist spot, when a hole opened up in their facility's wall. They were all soon recaptured.

In August 2017, a riot left 37 dead and 14 wounded in police cells in the southern state of Amazonas, while an April 2017 clash between rival gangs left 12 dead and 11 injured in the Puente Ayala prison in the eastern city of Barcelona.

A month before that, the remains of 14 people were found in a mass grave in the General Penitentiary of Venezuela, in San Juan de Los Morros in the country's centre.

Eight of the 28 escapees, who were arrested barely a week ago for carrying bombs and pistols in a van, belong to the notorious Maute group.
