<p>A spokesperson from the Israel Defence Force (IDF) said “there is no indication that a strike was carried out by the IDF” but that the incident was “under review”. However, it did not provide any other details.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"USCENTCOM forces successfully destroyed one ground control station and one command-and-control node," in a Houthi area of Yemen, the military command announced on X. CENTCOM also took out two Houthi "uncrewed surface vessels (USV) in the Red Sea" within the last 24 hours.&nbsp;</p>

A Filipino crew member&nbsp;believed to have been in the ship's engine room at the time of the attack was reportedly killed.</p>

The reconnaissance drones were apparently flying over northern Israel, including the Haifa port, but it's not sure when exactly it was filmed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Hezbollah has often launched drones, even with explosives, towards northern Israel in recent months. Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, who is the group's head, said in November that they had been sending surveillance drones over Haifa, which is 27 kilometres from the Lebanese border.</p>

<p>The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has not commented on the video, which was shared by the groups associated with Hezbollah, including on its Telegram channel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The militant group said that the video has "important scenes". The video included a cryptic message that it would show what the "hoopoe had brought back". Notably, the hoopoe is the name of a drone and also a bird that is regarded as a messenger in Arabic mythology.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The video pinpointed what Hezbollah said were Israeli military, defence and energy facilities, as well as civilian and military infrastructure.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Children shot at. Hospitals bombed. Heavy artillery launched on entire communities. All along with hateful, divisive, and dehumanising rhetoric,” said the UN rights chief.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The data, collected by the OHCHR, “horrifyingly” also indicates “that the proportion of women killed in 2023 doubled and that of children tripled, compared to the year prior,” Turk said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem are suffering a drastically worsening human rights environment, alongside “unconscionable death and suffering” in Gaza, the UN rights chief said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Turk also said he was “appalled by the disregard for international human rights and humanitarian law by parties to the conflict” amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the UN data, over 120,000 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, have been killed or injured because of Israel’s military operation in the Palestinian enclave.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Turk went on to talk about the Ukraine war and ongoing conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan and Syria. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The recent wave of Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure has destroyed 68 per cent of the war-torn country’s electricity production capacity, “bringing the system to a dangerous tipping point, especially ahead of winter,” said the UN rights chief.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Turk, as of the end of May this year the gap between the humanitarian funding requirements and available resources stood at $40.8 billion, which left appeals funded just 16.1 per cent on average.</p>

Israel's intel failed despite prior knowledge of Hamas' plan weeks before October 7 attack: Report

<p>Israel on Tuesday (Jun 18) conducted air strikes overnight on homes at a refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip, killing at least 17 Palestinians, news agency Reuters reported citing residents and medics.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As quoted by local reports, a journalist reporting from Deir al-Balah in central Gaza said that&nbsp;17 people were killed in "two separate attacks on homes in Nuseirat accommodating displaced families who had recently evacuated from Rafah".&nbsp;</p>

<p>He further added that "the first strike killed 10 people, including women and children. Five of them were from the same family".&nbsp;</p>

<p>"An hour later, the second attack targeted another family's home. The victims include not only the parents and their children but also the grandparents," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to a report by Oxford University’s Reuters Institute, as many as four in 10 (39 per cent) people said that they sometimes or often avoid the news.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The annual Reuters Institute Digital News Report noted that while this has been a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/reuters-survey-reveals-people-are-increasingly-avoiding-news-heres-why-498272">growing trend observed for years now</a>, selected news avoidance is at its highest levels ever recorded.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This year’s report is based on the responses collected from a total of 94,943 adults across 47 countries by YouGov in January and February.</p>

<p>The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza, may have contributed to some of the record-high levels of news avoidance reported this time around, according to the Reuters Institute report.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The reason for this avoidance, as per the report, has not changed. People who say&nbsp;that they sometimes or often selectively avoid the news say it is often repetitive and boring.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, others told the researchers that the negative nature of the news makes them feel “anxious and powerless.”</p>

<p>“You’ve had the pandemic (and) wars, so it’s a fairly natural reaction for people to turn away from the news, whether it’s to protect their mental health or simply wanting to get on with the rest of their lives,” the report’s lead author Nic Newman told BBC.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, around 39 per cent said that the news is not only depressing but relentless and they feel “worn out” by the amount these days.</p>

<p>The growing popularity and reach of social media can no longer be ignored, with politicians taking to TikTok and other networks to reach young voters - from the new Argentinian President Javier Milei who runs a successful TikTok account with 2.2 million followers, to US President Joe Biden whose campaign sparked controversy by joining the popular social media app despite it being banned on most devices used by the American government over security concerns.</p>

<p>However, YouTube and Facebook, according to the report remain the most important platforms for online news videos overall with the former being the go-to for those under 25. On the other hand, older viewers continued to watch their videos on news websites.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report noted that while mainstream media and journalists often lead conversations on X and Facebook, they fail to garner attention on platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok where online influencers and celebrities are prominent.&nbsp;</p>

Gaza war: 300 Stanford graduates walk out of commencement to join pro-Palestine rally

<p>The Israeli military announced that eight soldiers were killed in a blast in the Gaza Strip's Rafah on Saturday (Jun 15) morning. The incident occurred when an armoured vehicle, they were in, exploded, marking the deadliest incident for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in the enclave since January.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a statement, the military said that Captain Wassem Mahmud, 23, and seven other soldiers "fell during operational activity in southern Gaza". Only one soldier was identified, and the military said that other names were due to be released later on Saturday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Their families have been notified," the statement added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Initial investigation by IDF reportedly revealed that the troops were all killed inside a Namer armoured combat engineering vehicle (CEV).&nbsp;</p>

<p>IDF revealed that the troops from the 401st Armoured Brigade killed some 50 gunmen after an overnight attack against Hamas in the northwest sections of Rafah's Tel Sultan neighbourhood. The soldiers were then moving in a convoy on Saturday at around 5:00 am (local time) in the morning.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Times of Israel reported that it was first unclear whether the bomb was pre-planned or if Hamas militants had come up to the car carrying an explosive device and put it on the CEV. The vehicle was the fifth or sixth vehicle in the convoy, which was heading to buildings captured by the army. The troops were looking forward to rest following the overnight operation.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Deadliest incident for Israel since January&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>A student group at McGill called Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR) and took to social media asking students to sign up for the “revolutionary” program to be held on the university campus in the Canadian city of Montreal this month.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We pledge to educate the youth of Montreal and redefine McGill’s ‘elite’ institutional legacy by transforming its space into one of revolutionary education,” the group said in a post on Instagram.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It added, “The daily schedule will include physical activity, Arabic language instruction, cultural crafts, political discussions, historical and revolutionary lessons.”</p>

<p>Amid the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza, hundreds of universities across the world, including many in the United States and Canada, are witnessing months-long protests.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Pro-Palestinian student protesters have even set up encampments on campuses and called on university officials to divest from Israel over its ongoing military operation in Gaza.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>‘Extremely alarming’</strong></h2>

<p>In a statement, on Friday (Jun 14) McGill president and vice-chancellor, Deep Saini called the use of the image “extremely alarming”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“It should go without saying that imagery evoking violence is not a tool of peaceful expression or assembly,” he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Saini also called the image a “worrying escalation” which goes well beyond what universities are equipped to manage and said that they have contacted Canadian authorities over the social media post and “other recent activities as matters of national security”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the police in Montreal said that they have no plans to take action against the encampment at McGill.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) released a statement calling on McGill to “dismantle the toxic encampment immediately, or the antisemitism, hate, intimidation &amp; harassment will continue to metastasize.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Zeyad Abisaab, a student at Concordia University who volunteers at the McGill encampment said that the post is about the ongoing activities at the encampment including workshops and discussions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“It’s a space for people to learn,” said Abisaab, as quoted by Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). He also said that the image has been circulating in online pro-Palestinian spaces for years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The post was also criticised by many on social media with several people calling it an “indoctrination” and “terrorist training” camp. On the other hand, some expressed support for the message and the program buy said that it was not the right image to use.&nbsp;</p>

IDF responds after Hezbollah fires new barrage at Israel with rockets and drones

<p>United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said to the militant group Hamas that it is "time for the haggling to stop" after "numerous changes" were proposed by its leaders to a plan for a Gaza ceasefire as well as hostage release deal.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In Doha, he informed the reporters that a few of the changes were "workable" and others were not workable, but that the United States and mediators Qatar and Egypt will "try to close this deal".</p>

<p>On Tuesday (June 11), Hamas said that it was willing to "deal positively" with the process, however, it emphasised the need for Israel to agree to full withdrawal from Gaza and a permanent ceasefire.&nbsp;According to The Times Of Israel, the main issue on which the deal is getting stuck is that the Palestinian terror group has been demanding an Israeli guarantee up front which will agree to a permanent ceasefire.</p>

<p>The proposal has not been publicly endorsed by Israel's prime minister which US President Joe Biden had claimed was offered by the country while outlining it 12 days ago.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, Blinken said Benjamin Netanyahu had "reaffirmed his commitment" in a meeting in Jerusalem on Monday (June 10). A resolution was passed by the UNSC in support of the proposal and he added that Washington DC has been exerting diplomatic pressure.</p>

<p>At a press conference, Blinken said that they were discussing the changes which were requested by Hamas to the US-backed ceasefire proposal.</p>

<p>"Instead, Hamas waited nearly two weeks and then proposed more changes, a number of which go beyond positions that it had previously taken and accepted. As a result, the war that Hamas started… will go on, more people will suffer, Palestinians will suffer, more Israelis will suffer," he added.</p>

<p>Hamas issued a statement, in which the terror group called for "a complete halt of the ongoing aggression against Gaza" and the Israeli forces' full withdrawal.</p>

<p>Hamas political bureau's member Izzat al-Rishq said their response was "responsible, serious and positive" and had opened up "a wide pathway" for reaching an agreement.</p>

<p>Hamas, later in a statement, said that they have shown "full positivity" in its efforts to reach an agreement and have appealed to Blinken to put "direct pressure" on Israel.</p>

<p>A concerning UN report claims to have found evidence of violence against children reaching "extreme levels" in armed conflicts — particularly in Gaza and Sudan — in 2023.</p>

<p>The upcoming report obtained by AFP is the United Nations' annual "Children in Armed Conflict" report.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I am appalled by the dramatic increase in grave violations," wrote Secretary-General António Guterres in the report.</p>

<p>The report, prepared by Guterres and due for release on Thursday, highlights a 21 per cent increase in grave violations against children in 2023, totalling 30,705 verified violations.&nbsp;</p>

<p>These included 5,301 killings, 6,348 injuries, 8,655 instances of child recruitment and use in conflicts, 5,205 denials of humanitarian access&nbsp;and 4,356 kidnappings.</p>

<p>"In 2023, violence against children in armed conflict reached extreme levels, with a shocking 21 per cent increase in grave violations," said the report.</p>

<p>Findings of the report are unprecedented, said a senior UN official speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity.</p>

<p>Last year, "children bore the brunt of multiplying and escalating crises that were marked by a complete disregard for child rights, notably the inherent right to life," said the report.</p>

<p>The report places a number of entities on the blacklist for "killing and maiming children, and for attacks on schools and hospitals."</p>

<p>This in Sudan includes the Sudanese army and the rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The RSF was listed for recruiting children and committing "rape and other forms of sexual violence against children," alongside attacks on schools and hospitals.</p>

<p>Additionally, Hamas and the armed wing of Palestinian Islamic Jihad were added to the blacklist for the October 7 attack on Israel. The Israeli army was blacklisted for its retaliatory campaign against Hamas in Gaza.</p>

<p>The Russian army and "affiliated armed groups" also remain on the blacklist for killing 80 children in Ukraine in 2023 and injuring 339.</p>

<p>In Sudan, grave violations against children surged by "a staggering 480 per cent" from 2022 to 2023.</p>
