Thousands of residents were displaced from their homes during the nine-day operation, during which troops fought running gunbattles with Palestinian fighters from factions including Hamas and Islamic Jihad and Fatah.

"When they entered, they used bulldozers and began destroying everything. They left nothing," said Jenin resident Samaher Abu Nassa.

Water and electricity services remain cut and around 20 km of roadway was dug up by Israeli bulldozers, a tactic the military said was aimed at neutralizing roadside bombs but which has ripped up much of the centre of the city.

A statement from the military said 30 explosives planted under the roads had been dismantled.

The Palestinian foreign ministry accused the military of transferring the tactics used to level the Gaza Strip into the West Bank.

Jenin, in the northern part of the West Bank, has long been a stronghold of Palestinian armed factions, and the Israeli military said the operation, which also targeted the city of Tulkarm, was aimed at thwarting Iranian-backed militant groups planning attacks on Israeli civilians.

It said troops had killed 14 militant fighters during the operation, including the local commander of Hamas in Jenin. Forces also arrested 30 suspects and confiscated weapons and dismantled infrastructure including an underground weapons storage depot underneath a mosque and an explosives workshop.

On Friday, thousands, including large numbers of armed men who fired into the air, joined funeral processions for people killed during the fighting. Many of the bodies were wrapped either in Palestinian flags or the green, black and yellow flags of Hamas, Islamic Jihad or Fatah.

In all 21 people were killed in Jenin during the operation. Many were claimed as members by the armed factions but a number were uninvolved civilians, including a 16-year-old girl, apparently shot by a sniper while looking out of the window.

While the Israeli military's main focus over most of the past year has been in Gaza, the West Bank has seen a surge in violence, with repeated clashes between the military and Palestinian fighters as well as raids by Jewish settlers on Palestinian villages and attacks by Palestinians on Israelis.

More than 680 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, according to Palestinian health ministry figures. Many have been armed fighters but others have been youths throwing stones at protests or civilians with no involvement in the violence.

In the same period, dozens of Israeli civilians have been killed in attacks by Palestinians or in rocket and missile attacks from the Iranian-backed Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.

The foreign minister announced a review looking at the arms sales shortly after Labour swept to power in a landslide general election victory over the Conservatives in July.

"It is with regret that I inform the House (of Commons) today the assessment I have received leaves me unable to conclude anything other than that for certain UK arms exports to Israel, there does exist a clear risk that they might be used to commit or facilitate a serious violation of international humanitarian law," Lammy told lawmakers.

He stressed that the suspension was "not a determination of innocence or guilt" and that the situation would be kept under review.

Israeli forces rescue 52-year-old hostage from Hamas' tunnel in Gaza; eighth live hostage rescue since Oct 7

The Islamic State group on Saturday (Aug 24) claimed one of its members carried out the deadly attack in Germany in "revenge" for Muslims "in Palestine and everywhere".

"The perpetrator of the attack on a gathering of Christians in the city of Solingen in Germany yesterday was a soldier of the Islamic State" group, said a statement from the jihadists' Amaq news agency on the Telegram messaging app. The attack was carried out "in revenge for Muslims in Palestine and everywhere", the statement&nbsp;added.

Earlier on Saturday, the German police&nbsp;detained a 15-year-old teenager for the&nbsp;deadly knife attack in the western city of Solingen, which killed three and injured others.

The attack happened at 9:40 pm local time on Friday. Two men and one 56-year-old woman were left dead and eight were left injured, four of them critically. The weapon that may have been&nbsp;used in the attack was recovered from a bin in Solingen city centre.

In a press briefing, police said they won’t rule out a “terrorist motive” and that the arrested individual was not being treated as prime accused. The teenager is believed to have known about the attack beforehand and still not reporting&nbsp;it to police.

“He is at this point only suspected of failing to report a crime,” said public prosecutor Markus Caspers.

A manhunt is still on as police try to establish who exactly carried out the stabbings.

Police earlier said the attacker especially targeted victims’ throats and the situation became “very hectic” after the stabbings. “Yes, attacks were very targeted at people's throats and necks,” the police confirmed.

Germany’s Chancellor&nbsp;Olaf Scholz, said he was "shocked" at the incident, saying he stood strong with victims and&nbsp;the perpetrator must be caught quickly and "punished to the full extent of the law".

The main suspect is still at large as authorities try to find which direction the male assailant had fled in.
