Militants linked to Islamic State have released photos that purport to show weapons and equipment that belonged to American soldiers and were captured by the group in eastern Afghanistan.

The photos, which came to light on Saturday, show an American portable rocket launcher, radio, grenades and other gear not commonly used by Afghan troops, as well as close-up views of identification cards for a US army soldier, Specialist Ryan Larson.

The US military command in Kabul denied any suggestion the soldier had been captured, saying he &quot;has been accounted for and remains in a duty status within his unit&quot;.

American special operations troops have been fighting alongside Afghan forces in a renewed offensive against militants who claim allegiance to Islamic State in Nangarhar Province, which borders Pakistan.

&quot;SPC Larson was attached to a unit conducting a partnered (operation) with Afghan Forces,&quot; US military spokesman Commander Ron Flesvig said in an emailed statement on Sunday.&nbsp;&quot;The soldier&#39;s ID&nbsp;and some of the equipment were left behind after the (operation). The loss of personal identification is unfortunate.&quot;

In July, US commanders said at least five special forces were injured in fighting in the province.

The website that published the photos speculated that the equipment and weapons were left behind during that engagement, but Flesvig said American officials are still trying to determine exactly when and how it was lost.

The push in Nangarhar came after President Barack Obama cleared American troops to take a more active role in fighting militants in Afghanistan.&nbsp;Besides advising work and special operations missions, American aircraft deployed at least 545 weapons in the first six months of 2016.

President Barack Obama on Thursday touted progress he said the United States and its allies had made in the military campaign against Islamic State, but warned that the militant group still can direct and inspire attacks.

The United States is leading a military coalition conducting air strikes against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, where the group seized broad swathes of territory in 2014. It has succeeded in breaking Islamic State&#39;s grip on some towns, although it still controls its two de facto capitals, Mosul in Iraq and Raqqa in Syria.

The president, criticized for suggesting Islamic State was made up of amateurs, presented a more measured assessment on Thursday.

He said the last two years of the US-led air and ground campaign have proved that the extremist group can be beaten in conventional military fights but that it has shown the ability to carry out damaging, small-scale attacks.

&quot;I am pleased with the progress that we&#39;ve made on the ground in Iraq and Syria,&quot; Obama told a news conference at the Pentagon after meeting with officials directing the campaign, but added: &quot;We&#39;re far from freeing Mosul and Raqqa.&quot;While the campaign against Islamic State in Iraq, Syria and now Libya is making significant gains, the group is adapting, reverting to high-profile attacks and using the internet to recruit and train, and to encourage &quot;lone wolf&quot; attacks.

&quot;They&#39;ve seen the degree of attention they can get with smaller-scale attacks using small arms or assault rifles,&quot; Obama said. &quot;The possibility of either a lone actor or a small cell carrying out an attack that kills people is real.&quot;

The United States must do a better job of disrupting Islamic State networks that can carry out attacks far from the group&#39;s bases in the Middle East, Obama said.

Coordinating with Russia

In Syria, where the United States is exploring options to cooperate with Russia militarily to defeat Islamic State, Obama said Russia&#39;s and Syria&#39;s most recent actions have raised doubts about their commitment to a pause in the conflict.

This week, a Syrian rescue service operating in rebel-held territory said a helicopter dropped containers of toxic gas overnight on a town close to where a Russian military helicopter had been shot down hours earlier.

The opposition Syrian National Coalition accused President Bashar al-Assad of being behind the attack. Assad has denied previous accusations of using chemical weapons.

The twin US goals in Syria have been to end the violence that has claimed some 400,000 lives, according to United Nations estimates, and to seek a political process to replace Assad, whom Obama has said &quot;must go.&quot;

Proposals for the United States and Russia to cooperate in Syria would have them share intelligence to coordinate air strikes and prohibit the Syrian air force from attacking rebel groups considered moderate.

Bangladesh police said today a suspected Islamist extremist accused of carrying out a deadly attack on a prayer rally last month has been shot dead in a gunfight while in their custody. 
 
Shafiul Islam Don was being driven to a police station late Thursday when the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) vehicle carrying him came under attack by suspected fellow extremists. 
 
The 22-year-old was killed in the gunfight that ensued, local RAB commander Shariful Islam told AFP. 
 
&quot;The attackers opened fire as they tried to snatch Don. We fired back in retaliation,&quot; said Islam. 
 
&quot;After a brief gunfight, they fled the scene. We found Don and another person`s body from the spot.&quot;&nbsp;

A police officer for the US capital city&#39;s metro system was arrested Wednesday on charges that he tried to provide material support to the Islamic State jihadist group, prosecutors said.

He communicated for years with undercover agents and a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) informant, discussing his knowledge and interest in terror activities, prosecutors said. 
 
&quot;Metro Transit Police alerted the FBI about this individual and then worked with our federal partners throughout the investigation up to and including today&#39;s arrest,&quot; Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority General Manager and CEO Paul Wiedefeld said. 
 
&quot;Obviously, the allegations in this case are profoundly disturbing. They&#39;re disturbing to me, and they&#39;re disturbing to everyone who wears the uniform,&quot; he said in a statement. That same year, Young met several times with an undercover agent while accompanied by Amine El Khalifi, an acquaintance. 
 
El Khalifi later pleaded guilty to charges related to his plan to carry out a suicide bomb attack on the US Capitol Building. If convicted, Young faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. The White House is &quot;mindful of the risk that is posed by homegrown extremists,&quot; spokesman Josh Earnest said. 
 
Senator Ben Sasse, a Republican on the Homeland Security Committee, hailed the work of the FBI in apprehending Young.

Islamic State has named a new leader of Boko Haram, the Nigerian militant group which last year swore allegiance to it. 
 
Abu Musab al-Barnawi was named the Islamic State&#39;s governor for West Africa in a two-page interview in its weekly magazine, al-Naba, which was circulated late on Tuesday. Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, a former military ruler who took office last year, has made it a priority to defeat Boko Haram, which has tried to create a state adhering to strict sharia law in the northeast during a seven-year insurgency. 
 
Boko Haram controlled a swathe of land in northeast Nigeria around the size of Belgium at the end of 2014 but was pushed out by Nigerian troops, aided by soldiers from neighbouring countries, early last year. In the interview, al-Barnawi said Boko Haram was &quot;still a force to be reckoned with&quot; and that it had been receiving new recruits. 
 
Despite having been pushed out of most of the territory it controlled, Boko Haram has carried out suicide bombings in northeast Nigeria and neighbouring Cameroon, Niger and Chad, focusing on busy public areas such as markets and mosques. 
 
Fulan Nasrullah, a security analyst, said al-Barnawi had been a senior figure within Boko Haram who was previously the group&#39;s military commander. The Islamic State publication did not mention Abubakar Shekau, who was the group&#39;s leader and represented the Nigerian jihadists in videos during an insurgency that has killed about 15,000 people and displaced more than two million. 
 
Shekau, whose death has been reported on numerous occasions by the army only for him to reappear in videos, was last seen in a video circulated in March in which he seemed to suggest he was ailing and Boko Haram was losing its effectiveness. A video emerged the following week saying there would be no surrender. In June, a senior US general said Boko Haram had fractured internally, with a big group splitting away from Shekau over his failure to adhere to guidance from Islamic State. 
 
The Nigerian group swore allegiance to Islamic State, based in Syria and Iraq, in March 2015. That assessment came days after US officials said they had seen no evidence that Boko Haram had so far received significant operational support or financing from Islamic State militants, concluding the loyalty pledge had so far mostly been a branding exercise.

Funeral to be held for French priest slain by jihadists

A suicide car bomb attack in the eastern city of Benghazi targeting Libyan troops killed 23 people and wounded dozens of others today, a hospital official said. 
 
The official said the wounded were still arriving at the hospital in the aftermath of the bombing in the al-Qawarsha district on the outskirts of the city, Libya&#39;s second largest. For the past two years, fighting has been raging in Benghazi between forces under the command of Brig. General Khalifa Hifter and Islamic militias. 
 
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press. A coalition of Islamist militias called the Shura Council of Benghazi Revolutionaries, which includes the al-Qaeda affiliate known as Ansar al-Shariah, claimed responsibility for the deadly attack in a statement posted on its Twitter account. 
 
The attack comes after the United States started an air campaign on Monday in the central city of Sirte, the last bastion of the Islamic State extremist group in Libya. The strikes followed a request made by the internationally- recognised government and presidency council in the capital, Tripoli.

Since 2014, the country has been divided between two governments and parliaments, and a loose set of militias and tribes. The UN-brokered government led by Fayez Serraj aimed at healing the rift, but a crucial vote of confidence has yet to be obtained from the parliament.

When Afghan troops pushed into Kot, a district close to the border with Pakistan, this week, they found many of the houses empty, with posters plastered on the walls and black flags left by departing Islamic State fighters. 
 
Backed by US special forces troops and airstrikes that authorities say have killed hundreds, the Afghan army has launched an offensive against insurgents, both Taliban and Islamic State, and prevented the fall of district and provincial centres. 
 
Islamic State first appeared in Afghanistan at the beginning of 2015, and US officials say some 70 per cent of its fighters come from the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the Pakistani Taliban, many from the Orakzai area in the frontier region on the Pakistan side of the border. 
 
&quot;They were former members of the TTP, complete with their leadership, who wholesale joined Islamic State ... earlier this year,&quot; US Army General John Nicholson said. &quot;Seventy per cent, roughly, of those fighters are from the TTP, and many of them are Pakistani Pashtun from the Orakzai Agency.&quot;

In an extraordinary session of the National Assembly in Bamako, the 99 MPs present unanimously voted to maintain the state of emergency, a parliamentary source said. The extension will last until March 29, 2017, public broadcaster ORTM said. 
 
The government had declared a state of emergency on July 21, a day after an attack at an army base in central Nampala left 17 soldiers dead and 35 wounded. The state of emergency gives the security services greater powers and puts restrictions on public gatherings. 
 
Two groups -- the Islamist organisation Ansar Dine and a newly formed ethnic group -- both claimed to have carried out the raid on the military camp in Nampala, which the government described as a &quot;coordinated terrorist attack&quot;. Several security sources in the region said they doubted the veracity of the claim of responsibility from the National Alliance for the Protection of Peul Identity and Restoration of Justice (ANSIPRJ). 
 
The ethnic group was only founded last month following inter-communal clashes in the area and lacked the means to mount an attack, they said. Last week&#39;s attack was the latest in a series of assaults on security forces in Mali. A previous state of emergency in place since April had only been lifted the week before. 
 
Ansar Dine is a mainly Tuareg group that controlled areas of Mali&#39;s northern desert together with al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and a third local group in early 2012. Mali extends emergency by 8 months

One of the jihadists who murdered an elderly French priest smiled as he carried out the attack, and nuns who witnessed the grisly murder said the killers spoke about the Quran. 
 
The two nuns who were in the church when Father Jacques Hamel was killed, his throat slit on the altar, said the men appeared aggressive and nervous during the attack at the Eglise Saint-Etienne in Normandy on July 26. 
 
Then, one of the attackers seemed pleased. 
 
&quot;I got a smile from the second (man). Not a smile of triumph, but a soft smile, that of someone who is happy,&quot; nun Sister Huguette Peron told Catholic newspaper La Vie on Friday. 
 
Abdel Malik Petitjean and Adel Kermiche, both 19, had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group and both were killed by police in the shock attack. 
 
The men stormed the 17th-century stone church during mass in the town of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, taking several hostages before killing the priest and seriously wounding another captive. 
 
One nun fled the scene and alerted the police, leaving Sister Huguette and Sister Helene Decaux, both in their 80s, in the church with the jihadists. At one point, Sister Helene got tired and asked to sit down. &quot;I asked for my cane, he gave it to me,&quot; she said. 
 
Then the men started talking about religion, asking the nun if she was familiar with the Quran. &quot;Yes, I respect it like I respect the Bible, I&#39;ve read several suras. And those that hit me in particular are the suras about peace,&quot; Sister Helene responded. 
 
One of the attackers replied: &quot;Peace, it&#39;s what we want... as long as there are bombs on Syria, we will continue our attacks. And they will happen every day. When you stop, we will stop.&quot; 
 
Neighbours and acquaintances said Kermiche was &quot;obsessed&quot; with going to Syria, where an international coalition including France is carrying out air strikes against the IS jihadist group. 
 
&quot;Are you afraid to die?&quot; one of the attackers asked. The nun said no, then he said: &quot;Why?&quot; &quot;I believe in God, and I know I will be happy&quot; Sister Helene said, as she quietly prayed to herself. 
 
Then they started talking about God. 
 
&quot;Jesus cannot be God and a man. It is you who are wrong,&quot; one of the men said. &quot;Maybe, but too bad,&quot; Sister Huguette replied. At that moment, she prepared for her own death, not knowing what was coming next.

Neighbours and acquaintances said Kermiche was "obsessed" with going to Syria, where an international coalition including France is carrying out air strikes against the IS jihadist group. France church attack: Second suspect 'never raised suspicions for radicalisation'

A Bangladesh court today upheld the death sentence for six Islamist terrorists convicted over a suicide bombing in 2005 of a lawyer&#39;s office that killed eight people, a top prosecutor said.

Four lawyers and four litigants died in the attack. The suicide bomber was also killed. According to experts, it has been actively recruiting young and highly educated young men to its ranks. 
 
Police have blamed the banned group for scores of gruesome murders of religious minorities, as well as of foreigners, since 2013.

Bangladesh upholds death sentence for six terrorists

Al Qaeda&#39;s powerful Syrian branch announced yesterday it was ending its relationship with the global jihadist network founded by Osama bin Laden and changing its name, to remove what it called a pretext used by world powers to attack Syrians. 
 
In the first known video statement ever to show his face, the leader of the Nusra Front, Mohamad al-Golani, announced that the group would re-form under a new name, with &quot;no ties with any foreign party&quot;. 
 
The move was being made &quot;to remove the excuse used by the international community - spearheaded by America and Russia - to bombard and displace Muslims in the Levant: that they are targeting the Nusra Front which is associated with Al Qaeda,&quot; he said. The group would now be called Jabhat Fatah al-Sham. 
 
Golani appeared in the video flanked by two other Nusra Front figures, in front of Jabhat Fatah al Sham&#39;s new white flag. Nusra Front&#39;s old flag was black, the colour used by ultra-hardline jihadist groups such as Al Qaeda and Islamic State. 
 
Earlier yesterday, bin Laden&#39;s successor as al Qaeda leader, Ayman al-Zawahri, announced that he was giving the Nusra Front his blessing to break away. In his message, Golani thanked Zawahri for putting the interests of the Syrian people ahead of organisational interests. 
 
The move appeared to be an attempt to appeal to Syrians who have long had deep misgivings about Nusra&#39;s links with al Qaeda and the significant presence of foreign jihadists among its ranks, which set it apart from Western-backed rebel groups. 
 
It could alter the strategic alignment on the ground in Syria if the renamed Nusra gains acceptance among other rebel groups fighting against President Bashar al-Assad. 
 
But Assad and his Russian allies are unlikely to accept the rebranding as requiring them to halt military operations that have put the Syrian leader in the strongest position on the battlefield for years. 
 
The Nusra Front, long one of the most powerful rebel forces in Syria&#39;s five-year, multi-sided civil war, was excluded along with Islamic State from a US and Russian-backed ceasefire this year, a loophole other rebels blamed for the truce&#39;s collapse. 
 
Nusra is listed as a terrorist organisation by the United States and United Nations. Assad&#39;s other opponents have long said its presence gave the government and its Russian allies a pretext to abandon the truce and launch advances under the cover of anti-terrorist operations permitted under the ceasefire. 
 
Aleppo siege tightens

Rebel-held parts of Aleppo have been bombarded since Wednesday with air-dropped leaflets telling civilians they would be given safe passage out and providing maps to exit routes designated as safe corridors. Yesterday Assad ordered rebel fighters in the city to surrender within three months. 
 
Around 250,000 civilians are believed to be trapped in the rebel zone of Aleppo. The United Nations says food supplies will run out within weeks. 
 
Assad said rebels who surrender within three months would be given an amnesty. State television quoted the governor of Aleppo as saying three humanitarian corridors would be established so residents could safely leave. 
 
Russia said a fourth corridor would be set up in the north of the city for surrendering rebels, near the Castello Road, the main land route into the rebel sector, most of which the army seized to complete its encirclement. 
 
Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu said: &quot;On behalf of the President of the Russian Federation, today, (we will) start a large-scale humanitarian operation together with the Syrian government to help civilians in Aleppo.&quot; 
 
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said helicopters over rebel-held areas dropped baby diapers and meal packs that had Russian-language labels. 
 
&quot;If it is a genuine humanitarian proposal then clearly it will be accompanied by an end to the bombing campaign and by Russian support for other aspects of this comprehensive approach to the humanitarian situation in Aleppo,&rdquo; British ambassador to the United Nations Matthew Rycroft told reporters in New York. 
 
&ldquo;Clearly the UN and the rest of us cannot be complicit in anything else, for instance an form of emptying of Aleppo or preparing for an onslaught of Aleppo or indeed any continuation of this medieval siege of Aleppo which is going on.&quot; 
 
The proposed safe corridors did not appear to be open so far. Two rebels and aid workers contacted in besieged Aleppo said the army fired at civilians in one of the safe corridors, in the Salah al Din district. A doctor for a medical charity that operates in Aleppo also said the army had fired artillery at families gathering near another humanitarian corridor, in the opposition-held Bustan al Qasr neighbourhood. 
 
Hael Asi Hilal, head of the Syrian Red Crescent in rebel-held areas, said no family so far had been able to leave via any corridor due to snipers firing at them. 
 
The army, backed by allied militia forces and air support from Syrian and Russian jets, has meanwhile taken more ground on the northern edge of the city. State television said the army had advanced in the Bani Zeid district, on the southern side of the Castello road. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said pro-government forces had taken full control of the district. 
 
A rebel source confirmed that the army had made advances. He said Kurdish forces from the nearby Sheikh Maqsoud district had also taken advantage of the fighting to advance into a housing complex in Bani Zeid. 
 
&quot;There has been a (rebel) withdrawal, but no one has surrendered,&quot; Zakaria Malahifji of the Aleppo-based rebel group Fastaqim group told Reuters. 
 
The United States and Russia are both leading separate military campaigns against Islamic State in Syria but are otherwise supporting opposite sides in the wider civil war, with Moscow backing Assad and Washington saying he must leave power.

US Secretary of State John Kerry has been holding talks with Russians with the aim of building a system of military cooperation that would allow them to jointly identify legitimate targets not covered by the truce. But so far the negotiations have yet to bear fruit. 
 
A Russian deputy foreign minister, Sergei Ryabkov, said Washington&#39;s stance would allow militants to regroup since it would call for a ceasefire before distinguishing between terrorists and other opposition groups. 
 
&quot;There is an element here of a political ruse at least,&quot; Sergei Ryabkov said. 
 
One US national security official said it was difficult to negotiate with the Russians as long as the wider objectives of Moscow and Washington diverge.

Nusra Front renames itself Jabhat Fatah al-Sham, ends link to al Qaeda

Two jihadists who attacked a French church and killed a priest pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group, a video showed on Wednesday, as investigators worked to identify the second assailant. 
 
The attack is the third in two weeks in France and Germany in which jihadists have pledged allegiance to the group, increasing jitters in Europe over young, often unstable men being lured by IS propaganda and calls to carry out attacks in their home countries. 
 
IS also claimed that Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, who killed 84 people when he ploughed a truck into a crowd in the French city of nice on July 14, was one of their &quot;soldiers&quot;, however no direct link has been found. 
 
France was still deep in mourning over the massacre when two men stormed into a church in the northern town of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray during morning mass Tuesday and slit the 86-year-old priest&#39;s throat at the altar before being gunned down by police. 
 
Another man was left seriously injured in a hostage drama, while three nuns and a worshipper escaped unharmed. 
 
One of the attackers was identified as French jihadist Adel Kermiche, 19, who was awaiting trial on terror charges and had been fitted with an electronic tag despite calls from the prosecutor for him not to be released. 
 
Sources close to the investigation said they found an identity card belonging to one Abdel Malik P., also 19, at Kermiche&#39;s home, who they believe is the second attacker. 
 
They said Abdel Malik &quot;strongly resembles&quot; a man hunted by anti-terrorism police in the days before the attack over fears he was about to carry out an act of terror. 
 
In a video posted on the IS news agency Amaq, two bearded men, calling themselves by the noms de guerre Abu Omar and Abu Jalil al-Hanafi, hold hands as they swear &quot;obedience&quot; to IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

President Francois Hollande, members of his government and opposition rivals gathered together at the symbolic Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris for a mass attended by Muslim, Jewish and Christian leaders to pay tribute to the murdered priest. 
 
The moving gathering provided a rare show of unity and respite from days of political sniping over the repeat attacks, which right-wing parties say are due to the Socialist government&#39;s failure to protect citizens. 
 
&quot;Those who drape themselves in the finery of religion to hide their deadly project, those who tell us of a God of death, a Moloch (false god) who rejoices in the death of man and promises heaven to those that kill by invoking him. They cannot hope that man gives in to their illusion,&quot; said Cardinal Andre Vingt-Trois at the service. 
 
The mass came after a meeting earlier in the day between Hollande and top religious leaders who warned French people against being drawn in by IS efforts to pit different believers against each other. 
 
Prime Minister Manuel Valls has warned that the goal of the attack, claimed by Islamic State jihadists, was to &quot;set the French people against each other, attack religion in order to start a war of religions&quot;. 
 
In an editorial, Le Monde newspaper wrote that France was under attack as it had one of the biggest Muslim communities in Europe.

Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said Kermiche twice tried to travel to Syria under a false identity.&nbsp; 
 
After his latest arrest in Turkey in May 2015, he was held in custody until March this year when he was released and fitted with the electronic bracelet.

Al-Qaeda prepared the ground for a break with its Syrian affiliate, Al-Nusra Front, today following several days of online chatter over a break-up between the jihadist groups.&nbsp;

Islamic state posts video of men it says were French church attackers

Two bomb blasts claimed by Islamic State hit the northeastern Syrian city of Qamishli near the Turkish border today, killing at least 44 people and wounding 170 others, state television reported.
The official SANA news agency said at least 140 people were also injured when a suicide bomber in a vehicle blew himself up in a western neighbourhood of the city.

The attack was initially described as a double bombing, but sources in the city and the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights subsequently said the initial attack had caused a gas tank to detonate.

The area targeted houses of several ministries of the local autonomous Kurdish administration.
It said one of the bombs exploded near a security headquarters of the Kurdish administration that controls most of Hasaka province, where Qamishli is located. 
 
State TV said one blast was from a car bomb and the other from a bomb on a motorbike. 
 
It rolled footage purportedly from the scene of one blast, showing large-scale damage to buildings, vast amounts of rubble strewn across the road and plumes of smoke rising. 
 
One explosion was so powerful it shattered the windows of shops in the Turkish town of Nusaybin, directly across the border. Two people were slightly hurt in Nusaybin, a witness said. 
 
IS &#39;targeted&#39; Kurdish security forces&nbsp; 
 
Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, saying they had targeted Kurdish security forces. 
 
The jihadist group, which is fighting against the Kurdish YPG militia and its allies in Hasaka and Aleppo provinces, has targeted Qamishli and the provincial capital, Hasaka city, in the past with bombing attacks. 
 
A suicide blast killed six members of the Kurdish internal security force, known as the Asayish, in April. In July, an Islamic State suicide bomb killed at least 16 people in Hasaka. 
 
The YPG captured large areas of territory from Islamic State in northeastern Syria last year and is involved in a US-backed offensive that has advanced against the jihadists further west near the Turkish border.

The US-led coalition fighting the Islamic State group aims to open a new front in southern Syria in addition to its ongoing offensive in the northeast, US defense secretary Ashton Carter said yesterday. 
 
&quot;We will aggressively pursue opportunities to build pressure on ISIL in Syria from the south, complementing our existing, robust efforts from northeastern Syria,&quot; he said in a speech to US troops at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. ISIL is another term for the Islamic State group. 
 
Carter said the move will help Jordanian security and further split IS theatres of operation in Syria and Iraq. 
 
At the moment, the main coalition effort is centred on recapturing the Manbij pocket in northern Syria, the last jihadist-held territory bordering Turkey. 
 
That offensive is being led by the Syrian Democratic Forces, an Arab-Kurdish coalition. 
 
US-backed rebels also have tried to attack IS from the south, but so far without success. 
 
The New Syrian Army, a small rebel formation allied with the United States, tried in June to attack IS positions in Boukamal on the border with Iraq. 
 
But after coming within five kilometers of the town, the rebels were repelled by a jihadist counter-offensive. 
 
In another setback, the Pentagon said a rebel camp was bombed in mid-June by Russian warplanes, a charge Moscow has denied. 
 
After two years of war against the jihadists, the coalition estimates it has recovered about 50 per cent of the territory seized by IS in Iraq, and 20 per cent in Syria. 
 
The allies&#39; objective is to isolate and then recapture the cities of Raqa in Syria and Mosul in Iraq, the most important IS strongholds. 
 
&quot;As this isolation and pressure on Raqa and Mosul builds from the outside in, our partners will continue to reach deep inside those cities to enable pressure on ISIL from the inside out,&quot; Carter said.
