After facing defeat by similar margins in their opening round game, NorthEast United FC and Kerala Blasters FC drew 0-0 as both teams were locked in an intense battle, in a 2021-22 Indian Super League (ISL) match at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda on Thursday.

Kerala would rue a great chance to earn full points, having to blame all but themselves for some shabby finishing, especially with a lacklustre display by NEUFC`s forwards.

Ivan Vukomanovic handed young Vincy Barretto an ISL debut on the right-wing as Enes Sipovic made his debut in yellow at the heart of the defence.

NorthEast United, also lining up in a 4-2-3-1 formation dropped goalscorer from the last game, Mathias Coureur and opted for 24-year-old Australian centre-back Patrick Flottmann.

While neither side could carve out clear-cut chances in the opening exchanges, NorthEast did look threatening a couple of times. VP Suhair was the architect of Deshorn Brown and Khassa Camara getting half-chances to convert. The latter did slice a couple over the net from distance.

However, the highlight remained a right-footed free-kick from Hernan Santana that went inches above after Enes Sipovic had brought down Deshorn on the run.

At the half-hour mark, Blasters captain Jessel Carneiro swung in a cross that ultimately found Adrian Luna. His chip over the defensive line had Jorge Diaz almost head in the opener of the night.

Both teams remained compact in the first period as both sets of strikers found it incredibly tough to get going in the opposition half.

Five minutes into the second half, Sahal Abdul Samad missed a golden opportunity. Vincy blazed through the pitch after winning a second ball. He squared it into the box but with only the keeper to beat, Sahal grazed it wide.

Vincy kept trying hard to help his forwards but playmaker Adrian Luna was not clinical enough in the box. Both managers switched personnel with Alvaro Vazquez and Coureur arriving into the game for Blasters and NorthEast respectively.

In a change of formation, Sahal was taken off for wing-back Nishu Kumar, returning after being sidelined for up to ten months through injury for the final quarter-hour.

Kerala had their best chance of the night towards the final minutes courtesy of a brilliant pass by Nishu but teammate Alvaro Vazquez could not finish a rather easy header thanks to a spectacular save by NEUFC goalkeeper Subhasish Roy Chowdhury.

ISL 2021-22: NorthEast United FC held by Kerala Blasters FC at 0-0 in intense bout

Chennaiyin FC pulled off a hard fought 1-0 win over Hyderabad FC in their opening match of the Indian Super League here on Tuesday.

Vlagyimir Koman (66th minute) scored from the spot to give Chennaiyin a crucial lead, eventually sealing all three points as Hyderabad were left to rue their wastefulness in front of goal, especially in the first half.

Hyderabad, whose average age of the Indian players in the lineup was just 24, was dealt a major blow early on with Halicharan Narzary limping off in under 10 minutes.

That did not deter their resolve to stamp their impression as former ATK Mohun Bagan man Edu Garcia's shot was cleared away in a hurry but Bartholomew Ogbeche could not follow through.

Chennaiyin had goalkeeper Vishal Kaith to thank for keeping the former champions in the game. The Himachal Pradesh-born was tested a few times but he emerged unscathed.

Hyderabad were in fact wasteful in the opportunities the brittle Chennaiyin defence gave them. Ogbeche missed more than handy chances but substitute Nikhil Poojary's work-rate near the box only gained him new admirers.

Kyrgyz playmaker Mirlan Murzaev almost gave Chennaiyin a glimmer of hope late in the first half, but his header went off-target from a darting cross in by Reagan Singh.

Chennaiyin carried over the momentum post the break. Mirlan Murzaev and Lallianzuala Chhangte proved hard to contain.

Chhangte arguably had the best chance of the night when he beat Akash Mishra on the run, cut in and shot hard, only to be tipped off by Kaith.

New captain Anirudh Thapa then made it count for his side winning a penalty as he was brought down by Hitesh Sharma inside the box.

Former AS Monaco man Vlagyimir Koman stepped up to deliver a powerful piledriver that gave goalkeeper Laxmikant Kattimani no chance, breaking the deadlock with little over 20 minutes to play.

Chennaiyin led against the run of play, leaving Manolo Marquez to make four changes at a go. Joel Chianese, Javi Siverio, Sahil Tavora and young striker Rohit Danu were introduced in the 77th minute.

However, there wasn't to be another goal in the game.

ISL 2021-22: Chennaiyin stand tall against Hyderabad to start off their campaign with a win

Igor Angulo continued from where he left last season, a dominating outing though against his former side as defending champions Mumbai City FC beat FC Goa 3-0 here in a 2021-22 Indian Super League (ISL) match at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda on Monday.

Angulo (33` P, 36`) scored twice under three minutes in the first half before Brazilian Ygor Catatau (76') celebrated his ISL debut within minutes of stepping onto the pitch, closing the match for the City Football Group-owned club in their season opener.

Des Buckingham on his first match as Head Coach on Indian soil showed off Mumbai City's summer signings in the starting XI. Apuia, Mohammad Nawaz, Rahul Bheke, and Cassio Gabriel all started alongside Angulo.

FC Goa's replacement for Angulo, Airam Cabrera led the line for the Gaurs. Brandon Fernandes remained unavailable for selection due to injury.

There was drama early on with Leander D`Cunha let off for what looked like a possible foul inside the box for tripping down Vignesh Dakshinamurthy. The Mumbai City wing-back had to be subbed off in pain.

The game opened up after the half-hour cooling break. Gabriel received a cross with Ivan Gonzalez looking to clear. He brought himself between the ball and the FC Goa player and Ivan`s mistimed tackle led to a penalty kick.

Angulo converted the spot-kick with glee, beating old teammate Dheeraj Singh, who otherwise had a decent night.

Minutes later, it was time for Raynier Fernandes to turn provider. A sharp turn in midfield led to the ball played through for Angulo. The Spaniard took a deft touch, rushed past the defenders, and shot fiercely as the ball went into the net past Dheeraj`s right.

Mumbai City could have had a third before the break only for Raynier`s shot to be stopped by the crossbar. Big-money signing Apuia controlled the midfield with ease.

Juan Ferrando turned to his bench as he got in Nongdamba Naorem in the second half. Captain Edu Bedia almost halved the deficit with a half volley that flew over the bar.

Cassio Gabriel was the star of the second half with his industrious invasions inside FC Goa`s box. Ygor Catatau then came off the bench to nod in a free-kick sent in by Ahmed Jahouh, sealing the deal.

ISL 2021-22: Igor Angulo shines as Mumbai City FC begin title defence with win over FC Goa

In an intense contest, SC East Bengal were held 1-1 by Jamshedpur FC in a match of the 2021-22 Indian Super League (ISL) at the Tilak Maidan Stadium, here on Sunday.

The two sides cancelled each other out tactically in the game as both goals came from set-pieces. Croatian defender Franjo Prce (17`) scored a delightful opener for the Red and Golds while Peter Hartley (45+3`) equalised at the stroke of halftime for the Men of Steel.

Jose Manuel Diaz started in a classic 4-4-2 formation with Hira Mondal and Lalrinliana Hnamte making their ISL debuts for SC East Bengal. Jamshedpur FC sported a rather familiar look with new attacking duo Jordan Murray and Greg Stewart named on the bench.

The opening few exchanges saw two youngsters impress particularly. Boris Singh made his mark in an attacking role for Jamshedpur while debutant Hnamte had a shot on target early for the Kolkata giants.

However, it was center-back Franjo Prce that found the opener. Bikash Jairu swung in a corner that goalkeeper Rehenesh TP managed to parry off. Antonio Perosevic brought it back into play for Hnamte to lay it in for Prce, whose back-volleyed effort found its way into the net.

Jamshedpur, eager to get back, had Nerijus Valskis press upfront. The only time Valskis came close to scoring was around the half-hour mark when his shot grazed wide of the post.

Peter Hartley left it till the brink of half-time to level scores. Alex Lima`s flag-kick had Valskis flick it off for his captain who appeared to shoulder the ball past Arindam Bhattacharya, as SC East Bengal were left to rue their defensive error.

Ishan Pandita and Komal Thatal's introduction in the second half gave an impetus to Valskis. The Lithuanian had a shot saved by last season's Golden Glove winner Arindam after Ishan had a near sniff at goal.

Even Diaz tried his hands at substitutions. Amir Dervisevic and Jackichand Singh replaced Daniel Chima and young Hnamte around the hour mark.

Murray was brought in for Valskis with 20 minutes to go but both teams displayed extraordinary discipline in the second half. Jamshedpur though, looked increasingly favourites but could not pose a serious threat.
