Iran-US tensions are intensifying as Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian calls for an end to the month-long war while insisting that Tehran is negotiating from a position of strength. US President Donald Trump, however, says Iran is interested in a deal but is not yet ready to make what he considers the “right deal.”

Trump has also claimed that the United States has total control of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important waterways. The comments come as Washington increases economic and maritime pressure on Tehran.

Meanwhile, the United States is expected to announce new sanctions targeting Iran, while discussions involving Iran and Oman continue over possible conditions for resuming talks, including security and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf met Iraqi President Nizar Amedi in Baghdad on Wednesday, August 19, for talks focused on regional developments and bilateral relations.

According to the Iraqi Presidency, President Amedi reaffirmed Iraq’s support for efforts aimed at ending conflicts and resolving regional crises. He stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomatic channels in addressing outstanding issues.

Qalibaf highlighted the historic ties between Iran and Iraq and reaffirmed Tehran’s commitment to greater coordination and cooperation with Baghdad across various fields.

The meeting comes as both countries continue discussions on regional developments, diplomatic efforts and strengthening bilateral relations.
