The ICC is not losing hope of cricket being among "additional sports" to be played at the 2028 Los Angeles Games after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) started the process of identifying the core sports for the grand sporting spectacle.

The IOC on Thursday named 28 sports in the "initial programme" for the 2028 Olympics with skateboarding, surfing and sport climbing finding places in them. Boxing, weightlifting and modern pentathlon were excluded and the respective international federations have been given time until 2023 to meet certain criteria to secure their spot at the 2028 Games.

The list would be put to vote in the IOC Session in Beijing in February next year for approval, which is likely to be a formality.
Host City Los Angeles can also propose additional sports in 2023 to be included in the 2028 Games and the ICC is hoping that cricket is among sports to get the nod of the IOC.

Baseball, softball and a version of American football could be in the running to bid for additional sports in 2028 Olympics.

"The process to pick additional sports by the host city starts next year (2023) and we are hoping cricket to be a part of that," an ICC Board member, who is privy to the process, told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"We know it will be tough (for cricket to be included as an additional sport). There are no guarantees and we are up against some other great sports to try and get a spot in the 2028 LA Games."

In August, the ICC had expressed its intention to bid for cricket's inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, which also had the backing from the world's richest board BCCI.

The ICC has also formed an Olympic Working Group which will work on making the game part of the Olympics starting from 2028.

Our sport is united behind this bid, and we see the Olympics as a part of cricket's long-term future. We have more than a billion fans globally and almost 90 percent of them want to see cricket at the Olympics," ICC chairman Greg Barclay had said then.

In 2024, the IOC will decide on the additional sports proposed by the LA Games organisers. Following Tokyo and Paris (2024), Los Angeles Olympics will be third host which will propose additional sports in its programme.

Six new sports -- baseball, softball, karate, skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing -- featured at the Tokyo Olympics as additional sports. Surfing and break-dancing will be among additional sports in the 2024 Paris Games.

Japan: Public support waning for Olympics as govt prepares

Olympic chiefs on Saturday asked the World Anti-Doping agency to create a new drug testing body, at an Olympic summit in Lausanne, aimed at curbing the powers of federations.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) made a proposal to overhaul the global anti-doping fight, calling for sports' top court to rule on doping sanctions.

"Sanctions related to doping cases (are) to be delegated to the Court of Arbitration for Sport," said the statement.

Drug control duties will be withdrawn from the international sports federations with the formation of the proposed new body.

The statement clarified that whereas WADA will control regulations and compliance in the anti-doping fight, the new body will be responsible for testing athletes.

The new body will also have "intelligence and investigation" capabilities, the IOC added, AFP reported.

The proposals must still be approved at WADA's meeting next month and by the IOC's full executive board, which meets next in December.

In the past, sports federations were the final authority to decide on punishments for those who were caught cheating. The athletes could further take their appeals to the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS).

IOC president Thomas Bach insisted that giving the CAS the final authority would increase transparency and consistency within the global anti-doping effort.

Saturday's outcome will be seen by some as a victory for WADA, after its relationship with the IOC hit historic lows ahead of this summer's Rio Games.

Some IOC leaders accused WADA of reacting too slowly to evidence that Russia was running a massive state-sponsored doping programme and questioned the agency's governance.

But by maintaining its supervisory role in the global anti-doping fight and by leading the effort to forge a new testing authority, WADA has been assured a crucial role moving forward.

International Olympic Committee asks WADA to create new drug testing authority

Brazilian police yesterday seized passports, phones and computers during a raid on the Irish Olympic office at the Rio Games as they stepped up an inquiry into black market tickets.

Irish International Olympic Committee member Patrick Hickey has already been detained in the inquiry.

An Olympic Council of Ireland statement said Rio police took "passports along with their phones and laptops" from Irish officials at the OCI office in the athletes Village. Also confiscated were unused Olympic tickets that were meant to be for "athletes' families and friends."

Irish media said three officials had their passports seized. But the OCI did not comment.

"The OCI personnel were asked to present for questioning at a local police station on Tuesday," the statement said. The officials "agreed", it added.

Rio police did not confirm their role in yesterday's raid but said they were "conducting investigations since the morning, which will continue until Tuesday."

Earlier, IOC president Thomas Bach said that Hickey, currently held in the Bangu maximum security prison in Rio, will appear before a Brazilian judge on Tuesday.

The International Olympic Committee leader gave no other details but the 71-year-old Hickey could be formally charged or the judge could order him released on bail.

"Mr Hickey will have his first hearing by a judge next Tuesday," Bach said yesterday on the sidelines of an IOC executive meeting in Rio at the end of the Olympic Games.

Hickey, an IOC member, head of the Olympic Council of Ireland and the European Olympic Committees, was detained Wednesday and is accused of involvement in a ticket scam, ambush marketing and conspiracy over the sale of Rio Olympics tickets at inflated prices.

The ticket case has come as an embarrassment for the IOC. Bach again stressed the "presumption of innocence" in Hickey's case. He has not criticised or supported the Irish official.

Hickey "temporarily" stood down from his official positions after the arrest so the IOC ethics commission has not yet launched an official investigation.

The scandal has been mounting since the arrest on August 5 of Kevin Mallon, the Irish head of the THG hospitality company.

Police said they seized hundreds of tickets from Mallon some of which had the Olympic Council of Ireland name on them.

Tickets, including for the Rio opening ceremony, with a face value of about $1,400 dollars were offered for sale at $8,000.

Hickey denied any involvement with THG before his arrest.
