Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark was named to the 2024 All-WNBA First Team, the league announced today (October 17). Clark was also named the WNBA Rookie of the Year on October 3 and Associated Press Rookie of the Year on September 22.

Caitlin Clark's much awaited Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) debut on Tuesday (May 14) saw her scoring game-high 20 points for the Indiana Fever. She also committed 10 turnovers - the most in a debut game in WNBA. The Fever eventually lost the game 92-71 against the Connecticut Sun. Clark, the no.1 draft pick this year, felt disappointed but said that there's nothing more that to learn from it and move on.

"I'm disappointed, and nobody likes to lose, but I don't think you can beat yourself up too much about one game," Clark said. "I don't think that's going to help this team. Just learn from it and move on."

On being asked what was difficult for her throughout the game, Clark said: "I think definitely the physicality. I think also just like some uncharacteristic stuff. Like, I pick up the ball and travel, I dribble off my foot, I pass it on the inbound, I turn it over. So, just a few things that are just -- you have to be crisper."

Fever coach Christie Sides was also not under any illusion about the results and said: "They punched us in the mouth tonight."

Sides, however, was sympathetic with Clark for the rough debut and said: "She's a rookie. This is the best league in the world. We've got to teach her. We've got to teach her what these games are going to look like for her every single night. And we've got to eliminate some of that pressure for her, and that's on me."

Clark also registered three assists in the game apart from her 20 points in 32 minutes of play. Apart from her, only NaLysaa Smith scored in double figures, dropping 13 points.

For the Sun, DeWanna Bonner scored 20 while Dijonai Carrington and Tyasha Harris scored 16 each.

The decision was taken following an awkward exchange between Doyel and Clark at a press conference on 17th April after Clark was selected as the first overall pick in the WNBA 2024 draft. Here's how the conversation went down:

“You like that?” Clark asked in reply.

“I like that you’re here. I like that you’re here,” Doyel replied back.

“OK, well start doing that to me and we’ll get along just fine,” Doyel said in the end.

The comments drew huge flak for Doyel from not only fans but his ilk as well after which he issued an apology on the social media.

“Today in my uniquely oafish way, while welcoming Caitlin Clark to Indy, I formed my hands into her signature [heart],” Doyel wrote on the social media. “My comment afterward was clumsy and awkward. I sincerely apologize. Please know my heart (literally and figuratively) was well-intentioned. I will do better,” he added.

Doyel further apologized to Clark in a column as well, writing: "After going through denial, and then anger — I’m on the wrong side of this? Me??? — I now realize what I said and how I said it was wrong, wrong, wrong. I mean it was just wrong. Caitlin Clark, I’m so sorry."

Nonetheless, Doyel won't be covering the games in person in the upcoming season. Clark, meanwhile, will play her second preseason game for the Fever on May 14 after making her debut on May 3.

She played in the WNBA preseason game for the Indiana Fever before a 7000-strong College Park Center in Arlington, Texas against the Dallas Wings. This was the Iowa star's first game after the NCAA Women's Championship a few weeks ago and she did not disappoint.

The preseason game, however, was won by the Dallas Wings after Arike Ogunbowale's go-ahead 3P with three seconds remaining on the clock. The shot by Ogunbowale eventually proved good as the Wings beat Fever 79-76.

Clark got to business quickly, sinking a three inside the first minute from the right side of the arc and took Fever to a 5-2 lead. Her second three-pointer took Fever's lead to 14-3 minutes later. For her final three of the first quarter, Clark put down Wings' Jacy Sheldon, her former Big Ten rival from Ohio State, to get open and then pull up from the arc.
