A war of words started between Indian politicians of different parties after Indian National Congress (INC) leader Rahul Gandhi Congress leader Rahul Gandhi claimed that the Indian Union Muslim League "completely secular party".&nbsp;

Congress party said that the party he referred to was different from the Muslim League, for which the BJP has "more love". The opposition party also recalled when LK Advani had hailed Muslim League's leader Muhammad Ali Jinnah.&nbsp;

The comments were made when Gandhi was speaking during an interaction with journalists at the National Press Club in Washington DC on Thursday (June 1).&nbsp;

On being asked about Congress's alliance with the Muslim League in the South Indian state of Kerala, Gandhi said, "Muslim League is a completely secular party, there is nothing non-secular about them. I think the person (reporter) hasn't studied the Muslim League."&nbsp;

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders alleged that the Kerala party is guided by the same mindset which was behind Jinnah's All India Muslim League.&nbsp;

But in response to that, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh tweeted, "Shyama Prasad Mookerjee was in league with the Muslim League in the government in Bengal when (Mahatma) Gandhiji launched Quit India movement. SPM was singularly responsible for the partition of Bengal."&nbsp;

Further, he tagged a tweet by Congress leader Amitabh Dubey who had slammed BJP IT department head Amit Malviya for his criticism of Gandhi, saying "You're confusing the Kerala-based IUML he is talking about with Jinnah's Muslim League that took Savarkar's two-nation theory to its logical conclusion."&nbsp;

Dubey said, "The same Muslim League with whom BJP founder SP Mukherjee and Hindu Mahasabha formed coalition governments in Bengal, Sind, NWFP (North-West Frontier Province)."&nbsp;

Congress' media department head Pawan Khera said, "Those with entire political science (degree) should have some knowledge of the politics of their country." Khera mentioned that Muhammad Ismail, the founder of the Indian Union Muslim League, was a member of the Constituent Assembly. He said that during the war with China, his son Miyan Khan had joined the Indian Army.&nbsp;

While speaking at a press conference at the AICC headquarters, Gourav Vallabh said here that the party Gandhi referred to is IUML which is a registered political party in India.&nbsp;

Vallabh said, "Is a registered party in India not a secular party? Does the Election Commission get ineligible parties registered? I would like to remind the BJP that this is not the party with which Syama Prasad Mookerjee aligned to form the government in Bengal."&nbsp;

He said, "That Muslim League of Jinnah is different, with which you formed the government. Rahul Gandhi has not talked about that Muslim League but the thing is that you have more love for that party, therefore, you think that the party being talked about is the one whose founder was Jinnah."&nbsp;

India: Political row erupts over Rahul Gandhi's ‘secular’ remark on IUML

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/iuml-to-file-plea-in-supreme-court-against-citizenship-amendment-bill-267775">Indian Union Muslim League</a> (IUML) on Thursday filed a petition in the Supreme Court on the question of legality of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/no-one-can-take-away-your-rights-unique-identity-prime-minister-assures-assam-on-citizenship-amendment-bill-267780">Citizenship (Amendment) Bill</a>, 2019, which has been passed by both houses of Parliament.

IUML, in its petition, requested the apex court to stay the Bill and its operation. The Muslim League also pleaded to declare it "illegal and void" for violating Article 14, 15 and 21 of the Constitution.

In a copy made available to ANI, the league requested the court to pass and grant an interim stay on the operation of the Foreigner Amendment (Order), 2015 and Passport (Entry Into Rules), Amendment Rules, 2015; and decision arising from the aforesaid rules.

"Kapil Sibal will be representing us in the court. We are confident that we will win the case as it is strong both legally and morally. The Bill violates Article 14 and 15 of the Constitution," said Mohammad Bashir, IUML member and Lok Sabha lawmaker from Ponnani.

The lawmaker said the Constitution of India is being "ruthlessly ignored" by the government.

The Bill, which was passed by Parliament on Wednesday, faced its first legal challenge with the filing of the petition.

IUML national secretary <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/pm-narendra-modi-chaired-all-party-meeting-over-one-nation-one-election-underway-at-parliament-228677">P K Kunhalikutty </a>also said that since the Bill discriminates on the grounds of religion, it will not stand any ground in the top court.

The CAB smoothly sailed through Parliament after the Rajya Sabha passed it on Wednesday. As many as 125 members of the Upper House voted in favor of the Bill while 105 MPs voted against the Bill, which was passed by Lok Sabha earlier this week.

IUML to file plea in Supreme Court against Citizenship Amendment Bill

Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) national secretary PK Kunhalikutty has given Adjournment Motion Notice in the Lok Sabha opposing introduction of Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB), 2019.

Speaking to ANI, IUML leader ET Mohammed Basheer said, "As far as IUML is concerned like other opposition parties, we will oppose this bill in the parliament, outside the parliament and through the judicial process. In three ways we will oppose this bill because it is unconstitutional."

"Article 14 of the Constitution says equality before the law but this bill violates that. Article 15 of the Constitution prohibits all kinds of discrimination based on religion, caste, creed, sex or birth of place but this bill violates this aspect of Article 15 also. Secularism is the soul of the Constitution, the bill violates that also," the IMUL MP said.

"So we have decided to fight it. We have a dialogue with all the like-minded parties. If the bill is passed in the Lok Sabha and in the Rajya Sabha as well, then we will move the Supreme Court," he added.
