Indian Statistical Institute’s professor, Neena Gupta, has been awarded with Ramanujan Prize for Young Mathematicians for her work in affine algebraic geometry and commutative algebra.<o:p></o:p>

Gupta is the fourth Indian to receive this prize and third woman to ever receive this award, as per Ministry of Science and Technology.

The Ramanujan Prize, titled '2021&nbsp;DST-ICTP-IMU Ramanujan Prize for Young Mathematicians from developing countries' this year, is an award presented to young mathematicians from around the world under the age of 45. The awardee is felicitated for their pathbreaking work in the field.<o:p></o:p>

This award, handled by Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), the Department of Science and Technology (DST) Government of India and the International Mathematical Union (IMU), was first awarded in 2005.<o:p></o:p>

Interestingly, out of the four people who have been awarded the prestigious award, three have been faculty members of the Indian Statistical Institute. This year, Gupta has been appreciated for showing 'impressive algebraic skill and inventiveness'.

<h3 class="MsoNormal">Previous achievements<o:p></o:p></h3>

Gupta was awarded with the&nbsp;Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology in 2019. In 2014, she was also lauded with Young Scientists Award of the Indian National Science Academy for her version of the solution to the Zariski cancellation problem, a fundamental problem in Algebraic Geometry. Her solution was described as 'one of the best works in algebraic geometry in recent years done anywhere'.<o:p></o:p>

A mathematics graduate from Bethune College and, Gupta pursued her Masters and PhD from ISI before joining the faculty as a faculty member. She had realised her love for the subject early in her childhood, and has since then continued working on some of the complex ideas of the subject.<o:p></o:p>

Air India refused to allow a wheelchair-bound passenger to board a flight reportedly because he did not remove the wires from the battery of his wheelchair.&nbsp;

Kaushik Majumdar, an Associate Professor at the Indian Statistical Institute in Bengaluru was travelling from the city to Kolkata on December 17.&nbsp;

Majumdar told PTI that each time he travels by air, his disconnects the battery from his wheelchair.&nbsp;

&quot;Some weird staff, however, insisted on removing all the wires from the battery, which would have completely ruined the equipment, on which I depend,&quot; PTI reported him as saying.&nbsp;

Majumdar added that he refused to do so.&nbsp;

PTI reported Majumdar as saying that in all airlines, including Air India, disconnecting the battery from the wheelchair joystick controller is enough.

&quot;Why then an exception was made in AI 776 on December 17? Who are responsible? I want an answer,&quot; he said.

Majumdar added that even the CISF had smoothly cleared the chair but right before boarding, some Air India staff had raised security issues with the battery.

PTI reported Air India General Manager for Corporate Communications GP Rao as saying no passenger can violate Directorate General of Civil Aviation norms.&nbsp;

PTI reported Rao as saying that Majumdar had promised to remove the battery at the boarding gate, but refused to do it when he got there.

Subsequently, Rao added, the pilot was informed and he took a call not to allow the passenger on the aircraft.&nbsp;
