For the First Time, SpaceX to Launch an Indian Govt Satellite

India's communication satellite, 4.18-tonne GSAT-24, is undergoing health and performance checks at clean room facilities in French Guiana, the European spaceport, said the Indian space agency. The satellite is scheduled to be launched on board the European Ariane V rocket (VA257 flight) on June 22. The satellite is meant to provide pan-India coverage and cater to the needs of direct-to-home television broadcast service provider Tata Play.

Notably, this launch is what India's state-run Department of Space calls the “first demand-driven communication&nbsp;satellite&nbsp;mission of the New Space India Limited (NSIL), the commercial arm of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

NSIL was incorporated in March 2019 and was mandated to undertake operational satellite missions on a “demand-driven” model, wherein it has the responsibility to build, launch, own and operate the&nbsp;satellite&nbsp;and provide services to its committed customer.

As part of the&nbsp;GSAT-24&nbsp;mission, NSIL is getting the&nbsp;4-ton class Ku- band&nbsp;satellite&nbsp;built by ISRO and will be launching it using Ariane-5 launcher operated by M/s Arianespace. The entire&nbsp;satellite&nbsp;capacity on board GSAT-24&nbsp;will be leased to its committed customer M/s Tata Play for meeting their DTH application needs. NSIL has entered into a necessary agreement with M/s Tata Play for utilising the&nbsp;satellite&nbsp;capacity on board GSAT-24&nbsp;and with M/s Arianespace for seeking the launch services.&nbsp;GSAT-24&nbsp;satellite&nbsp;will be owned and operated by NSIL on a commercial basis.&nbsp;GSAT-24&nbsp;satellite&nbsp;mission will be fully funded by NSIL.

ISRO said that GSAT-24 was cleared by its pre-shipment review committee on May 2 this year after completing assembly, integration and environmental test. Following this, the satellite and its associated equipment were flown to Kourou, French Guiana, on May 18 on board C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft.&nbsp;

GSAT-24, built by ISRO, will be placed in orbit on June 22 by the French Ariane 5 rocket. The launch would be carried out from the Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana, in a launch mission dubbed 'VA257'. Once placed in the desired geostationary orbit,&nbsp;the Indian communication satellite will provide high-quality television, telecommunications and broadcasting services.

Earlier, Arianespace, the launch service provider, shared a picture of the container carrying the&nbsp;satellite&nbsp;being offloaded from a military transport aircraft, and stated that "We’ll let you know once the beast is awake".&nbsp;

While India launches indigenously-built satellites for national requirements and customer-built&nbsp;satellites on board its own rockets, it also uses the services of the European launcher Ariane to fulfil certain missions from foreign soil. Given that India's maximum payload lift capability to Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) is 4 tons, lifting GSAT-24 to orbit on an Indian rocket is not feasible.&nbsp;

Significantly,&nbsp;GSAT-24&nbsp;will be the 25th Indian&nbsp;satellite&nbsp;orbited by Arianespace, highlighting the longstanding partnership. India's ties with launch provider Arianespace dates back to 1981, when Ariane 1 rocket launched Indian satellite&nbsp;APPLE (Ariane Passenger PayLoad Experiment). APPLE was an experimental communication satellite built by ISRO. In later years, Indian rockets have also orbited European satellites.&nbsp;

Indian satellite GSAT-24 undergoing pre-launch performance checks in European spaceport

Bharti group-backed Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communications company OneWeb on Monday confirmed the successful launch of another batch of 36 satellites by Arianespace from the Vostochny Cosmodrome. 
 
This successful launch brings OneWeb's total in-orbit constellation to 182 satellites.

These will form part of OneWeb's 648 LEO satellite fleet that will deliver high-speed, low-latency global connectivity, and represents 60 per cent of the constellation required to enable its connectivity solution to reach all regions north of 50 degrees latitude by June 2021, the company said in a statement. 
 
"With this successful launch, we are rapidly building momentum, we are launching more satellites, demonstrating the network and announcing more distribution singings around the globe," said Neil Masterson, CEO, OneWeb. 
 
This was the third in a five-launch 'Five to 50' programme, enabling OneWeb to offer services across the UK, Alaska, Northern Europe, Greenland, Iceland, the Arctic Seas and Canada, and will be switched on before the end of the year. 
 
OneWeb then intends to make global service available in 2022. 
 
OneWeb signed an MoU with the government of Kazakhstan this month as it continues to demonstrate the company's commercial viability and the confidence customers have in its services and offering.

Now, this trend is being kickstarted in India, by Chennai-based SpaceKidz, that will be launching their SD Sat (an experimental communication satellite)&nbsp;on-board ISRO’s PSLV-C51 rocket in early 2021.&nbsp;

Satish Dhawan Satellite (SD Sat) is a 30x10x10cm cuboid, which is being launched into orbit to study space radiation, the magnetosphere and most importantly to demonstrate the indigenously designed and developed nanosatellite components, in line with Indian government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-reliant India) policy. The satellite is named after Prof. Satish Dhawan, a former ISRO chairman and among the pioneers of space technology in India.&nbsp;

This miniature spacecraft would also test the capabilities of LoRa (Long range) technology in space which could be helpful for many applications in the future in short and M2M (machine-to-machine) communication. LoRa is a long-range, low-power wireless radio frequency technology that has become a common platform for the Internet of Things (IoT) networks worldwide.&nbsp;

According to Dr. Srimathy Kesan, Founder and CEO of SpaceKidz India, this satellite is their most ambitious yet and the first one that would have propulsion of its own. It is important to note that SpaceKidz earlier satellites were maintained in orbit on board PS4 (final and fourth stage) of the PSLV rocket for up to 6 months after launch. But SD Sat would fly on its own like the larger satellites and is expected to have a mission life of two years.&nbsp;

While their satellite would be primarily using Frequency-shift keying (FSK) to transmit data back to earth, LoRa would be the secondary. Experimenting with LoRa would help them study the feasibility of using LoRa in ground communications for industrial purposes.&nbsp;

“SD Sat (30x10x10cm)is a significant step for our 10-member team of college students, because so far we’ve only done 10cm cubes. The satellite fabrication is underway and it will be handed over to ISRO within three weeks from now. The important aspect of this mission is to establish communication with the satellite from our ground station in Chennai” she told Zee Media.

When asked about the idea of sending names of common people to space, she said it was an initiative to create awareness, generate curiosity and to get more people fascinated about space science, which many still perceive as inaccessible.&nbsp;

“We’ve shared a link on our website where people can enter their names (by Jan 3rd), we’ll compile the list and put the names on a memory card that’ll be on-board the satellite. Everyone who registered their name will get a boarding pass”, she added.&nbsp;

As a goodwill gesture, SpaceKidz team had also shared a similar boarding pass with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi when they had virtually interacted with him the previous week.&nbsp;

India's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle in its 51st mission of the PSLV-C49&nbsp;is an earth observation satellite meant for applications in agriculture, forestry and disaster management support.

PSLV-C49&nbsp;is carrying customer satellites from Luxembourg, USA and &nbsp;Lithuania.

All nine customer satellites have been successfully separated and injected into their intended orbit, ISRO informed.
