Families of 16 Indian sailors held hostage by the Guinea Navy are worried about the safety of the sailors and have pinned their hopes on the government.

The Indian sailors have been held hostage for nearly the last three months, and the families have demanded an immediate release of the sailors.

Gaurav Arora, a resident of the Govind Nagar area in Kanpur, is among the 16 Indian crew of the ship detained by the Navy of Equatorial Guinea, a country located on the west coast of Africa.

As per Gaurav's family, he had recently joined the merchant navy as a third officer and he was on a Norway-based ship 'MT Heroic Idun' that reached AKPO Offshore, a conventional gas development located in ultra-deepwater in Nigeria on August 8 when he was held hostage along with other crew members of the ship.

The ship had anchored on the international maritime boundary of Nigeria on August 8. The ship crew of 26 people including 16 Indians was waiting for their turn when the

Guinea Navy detained the ship and the crew the next day on suspicion that they had come to steal oil, his family said.

Of them, 15 were taken to a hotel, and 11 have been kept on the ship, they claimed.

The family said they are worried because the Guinean Navy is going to hand over the ship crew to Nigeria any movement.

"It's a nerve-racking time for us. We are really worried about the safety of my brother and the 15 Indians of the ship crew," Gaurav's sister Komal Arora told ANI.

She said that the Indians might be charged with false allegations and the Guinea Navy will hand them to Nigeria.

"We all know how sensitive the place is. The government must intervene since we can't predict how the Nigerian government would treat Indians once the handover is done. It must be stopped," she appealed.

The family of Ayush Chaudhary, a sailor at a Dubai-based shipping company who went missing in Iran, has urged the Indian government to help bring him back.

Speaking to ANI, Chaudhary's brother Shubham said the family was informed on July 19 that the sailor was swept away by a wave. He went on to claim that after 48 hours, the search operation conducted to locate Chaudhary was suspended.

"My brother was recruited through a company. We were in touch with him till July 13. On July 17, we got a call from the ship captain regarding Ayush. But the message was unclear since he was speaking in the local language," he said.

Shubham continued, "On July 19, they told us that he (Ayush) disappeared after a wave came and swept him away. The rescue operation was carried out only for 48 hours."Shubham has sought the government's intervention in the matter.

"We request the Indian government to carry out an investigation with the help of Iran and look for him," he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Australia Sunday joined an international mission to rescue an injured Indian sailor stranded in the Indian Ocean while competing in the round-the-world Golden Globe Race.

The mast of Abhilash Tomy's yacht Thuriya broke off when it was rolled in a storm on Friday and the yachtsman suffered what he described as a "severe back injury".

The 39-year-old Indian navy commander was "incapacitated on his bunk inside his boat" some 2,000 miles (3,704 kilometres) off Western Australia state, organisers said.

Two P8 Poseidons -- one from the Royal Australian Air Force and another from the Indian armed forces -- flew over the yacht to inspect it Sunday, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said.

AMSA, which is coordinating the search, said the crews saw that the yacht was dismasted but did not get further information about Tomy's condition.

"He is injured inside the yacht, so he can't communicate further," an AMSA spokesman told AFP.

Tomy was communicating with organisers via a YB3 texting unit but his main satellite phone was damaged, and his injury meant he was unable to reach a second satellite phone and handheld VHF radio.

The yacht's location is so remote that a French fisheries patrol vessel in the area which has been tasked by AMSA to join the rescue was only likely to reach Tomy on Monday or Tuesday.

The Australian Defence Force said Sunday it would also assist in the rescue, with the frigate HMAS Ballarat sailing from Perth late Saturday towards the yacht.

The Golden Globe Race involves a gruelling 30,000-mile solo circumnavigation of the globe in yachts similar to those used in the first race 50 years ago, with no modern technology allowed except the communications equipment.

Tomy's own yacht is a replica of Robin Knox-Johnston's Suhail, winner of the first Golden Globe Race.
