<p>The Tamil Nadu unit of India's ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata Party has appealed to Dr. Jaishankar to ensure the safe repatriation of the Indian nationals, at the earliest. "We also request our Indian embassy in Oman to escalate this matter to the Ministry of Labour in Oman to ensure that these eight fishermen are paid their salary dues" read the letter by K. Annamalai, State President, TN BJP.</p>

Indian external affairs ministry's help sought to save fishermen stranded in Oman

<p>Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Vaibhav rescued nine fishermen of IFB Jeraldon-2, a fishing boat, that was stranded about 75 nautical miles(139 kms) south-east of Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu due to engine failure. The information regarding stranded fishing boat and distressed crew was received by Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The boat was reportedly drifting at sea due to engine failure and was facing the vagaries of the ocean. Owing to strong winds and currents, the fishing boat drifted further into the Sri Lankan waters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>ICGS Vaibhav rushed to the area and undertook a thorough search. Subsequently communication was established with the boat, which was approximately 25 nautical miles(46 kms) across the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Continuous communication was maintained with the fisheries department, Tuticorin and the boat owner during the entire operation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>ICGS Vaibhav towed the boat and handed her (Jeraldon-2) along with her nine crew to another fishing boat which was deployed by the owner for assistance. The safe handover took place about 10 nautical miles inside the Indian waters, on Thursday evening.&nbsp;</p>

<p>To a question by Congress MLA Babu Vaja, Solanki said the state government gives Rs 150 per day to the families of fishermen captured by Pakistan, towards daily expenses in the absence of the family's breadwinner.</p>

<p>A total of Rs 1.88 crore were paid to 344 families in 2017 and Rs 1.71 crore was paid to 307 families last year, the minister said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Fifty three Indian fishermen were Friday released from a Sri Lankan jail, days after the two countries decided to release fishermen in each other&rsquo;s custody to defuse tension following the killing of an Indian fisherman allegedly by the Lankan navy.</p>

<p>&ldquo;53 fishermen have been released from Jaffna jail while 32 others are still in custody in Vavuniya jail,&rdquo; Fishery Ministry officials said.</p>

<p>Sri Lanka had earlier informed the Indian High Commission in Colombo that it will release all 85 Indian fishermen in their custody, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Gopal Baglay said.</p>

<p>Sri Lanka and India on Wednesday agreed to release fishermen held in each other&rsquo;s custody after a high-level discussion between the two sides in Colombo in a bid to defuse the tension following the killing of an Indian fisherman.</p>

<p>Britjo, a 21-year-old fisherman from Tamil Nadu, was killed and another injured on March 6, 2017 allegedly by the Sri Lankan Navy.</p>

<p>Colombo in the past has urged the Indian side to ban the trawlers but New Delhi has remained reticent about it.</p>
