Many businessmen see Oman as a destination for their investment. Of course, there have been ongoing discussions with regard to a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, a CEPA agreement. The CEPA agreement will provide a platform to ease and make a business interaction more transparent and more straightforward. It is mentioned within the joint vision documents, during His Majesty's visit. That we are looking into the initiation of the negotiation and completing those negotiations in a very speedy time. So hopefully the outcome of that will be some positive news in the near future.&nbsp;Sidhant Sibal: And your view on the diaspora connect?Amb Issa Saleh Abdullah Saleh Alshibani: So according to statistics, there are around 700,000 Indians who are living in Oman. They feel that Oman is a second home to them, and to commemorate the old historic relationship, it is within the joint vision diplomat where the Indian side has decided to build a stitch ship that will sail from Mandvi to Oman, that is where it shows the depth of this relationship between the two countries.&nbsp;Sidhant Sibal: So in terms of connectivity, what are we looking at between the two sides?Amb Issa Saleh Abdullah Saleh Alshibani: So in terms of air, we have more than 11 flights per day going from different airports in India. In terms of sea is where there has been so much development, in terms of Oman ports. We have now three strategic ports in Oman, where Indian investors see those as a potential ports for them, for trade. Oman has been strategically located, and people and investors in India understand. In terms of the infrastructure of most of the ports, there have been so much developments, and there is always a plan for expansion and development of these ports.&nbsp;Sidhant Sibal: We spoke about Indian investment to Oman. If you can give us a broader picture of Omani investment in India.Amb Issa Saleh Abdullah Saleh Alshibani: India is one of the largest economies in Asia. Omani investors as well, they see India as a very potential investment place. We have seen an interest. Whenever there is a business delegation for Oman, there is a huge interest from Omanis as well to come and explore. I think you know what we are going to see is that in future, we will see much huge interest from the Omani investors as well to come in India and look into opportunities to invest.&nbsp;Sidhant Sibal: Defense relationship, it has been growing. They have been training together by the Omani side and the Indian side. So if you can talk about the military relationship, and there have been reports of Omani side giving spare parts for Jaguar fighter jets as well, perhaps, if you'd like to talk about that, as well.Amb Issa Saleh Abdullah Saleh Alshibani:&nbsp;Jaguar spare parts is one way of showing the depth of this defense relationship. Oman was the first country to establish joint exercises on the three forces, and it has been continuing for the last many years. And I think the benefit from both sides is where we have seen it mutual. There has been a huge appreciation of the opportunity for those joint exercises and and I think that is going again to grow. We share the Indian Ocean, and I think that is a very important point with regards to the military collaboration that we have seen. India is looking into enhance its defence industry.&nbsp;Sidhant sibal: Will it be right to say that Oman is India's closest partner in West Asia, given the historical relationship, the cultural relationship, the connectivity..Amb Issa Saleh Abdullah Saleh Alshibani: I think that is demonstrated very well. During the His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, we have seen some of his initial visits coming to India, and within a very short time. Now expections on PM Modi's visit. That shows, really, the scope of the relationship, how this relationship is strong. I think both countries are very stable in terms of economy and governance, and where we have seen that both countries have an approach of extending the notion of dialog and stability within the region. I agree with you that the relationship is strong. The relationship is historic, and the people to people connection has been there and is growing year after year.

Oman ambassador Issa Saleh Abdullah hails deepening trade, investment, and defence ties with India

Indian Ambassador to Oman Amit Narang has confirmed that India is sending wheat consignments to the country and "more shipments of wheat will be on their way to Oman soon". Indian supplies to Oman come even as the Russia-Ukraine conflict has impacted the global supply chain and wheat supply. Both the countries are major exporters of wheat to the international community.

Speaking to WION's principal diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, Envoy Narang said, "as soon as the conflict began we initiated discussion with the Omani side and happy to report already Indian consignments of wheat have reached Oman". The matter also came up during the discussion between the Indian, and Omani trade ministers during the joint commission meeting on Wednesday.

The Indian envoy also said that Oman and India are looking at preferential trade agreements. India was already looking at a comprehensive trade agreement with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations, of which Oman is an important member. Here is the detailed interview.

WION: What are the key outcomes of the India, Oman joint commission meeting? 
Amit Narang: The Omani commerce minister is in Delhi, on Wednesday we had a very productive session of the joint commission meeting, chaired on our side by our minister of commerce and industry, Piyush Goyal. Oman is India's most trusted and strategic partner in the Gulf region and this relationship is essentially founded on a trade and investment relationship which has been with us for several decades. We have over 6000 Indian companies invested in Oman, a total investment of over 7.5 billion dollars. On the other side, trade relations are also growing very robustly. We have touched nearly $10 billion of bilateral trade this year. So on the back of these developments, it is very important to have institutional mechanisms meet and meet early, especially after the disruption of the pandemic. Wednesday saw a productive session, a very wide-ranging discussion on a range of topics covering the entire gamut of not just trade and commerce relations but several other fields, including financial and others. Very good outcomes which hopefully will anchor the relationship in the next few years.

WION: How does the use of the RuPay card help the diaspora? 
Amit Narang: Yes, it does, the USP of the RuPay card, is that once you put that in motion it also allows more Indian travelers to come and spend their money for tourism-related purposes. The discussions with the Omani government are ongoing and I can they are at a very advanced stage In principle, there is an acceptance that it will be done. &nbsp;Some technical level discussions are being sorted out, hopefully, in the next few months, it will be done.

WION: On wheat export from India, India is giving wheat consignment to various countries. What has the been conversation like, amid the Russia Ukraine crisis 
Amit Narang: Look, the conflict in Europe has brought the issue of supply chain disruption in the food sector to light, but even other than that India is the largest exporter of food products to Oman, especially rice. They had a large dependency on Ukraine for Wheat imports and as soon as the conflict began we initiated a discussion with the Omani side and were happy to report already Indian consignments of wheat have reached Oman, to the extent that on Wednesday our minister categorically said that India has committed to Oman's food security and any disruption they may encounter India will be happy to fill in, these details have been shared with them. I am happy and very confident in terms of wheat more and more shipments of wheat will be on their way to Oman soon.

WION: On the relationship, we have seen high-level visits. How do you see the relationship going? 
Amit Narang: The relationship is on an upswing, my sense after going to Oman and having spent 6 months, as both countries are coming out of the pandemic, we are both returning to a high growth trajectory, and based on the historical relationship we have and very strong people to people relation, this relationship is poised to jump to the next level. The last few months, as you have mentioned, has seen a string of ​high-level visits from Oman side and this will continue hopefully and we will ensure all the institutional mechanism to anchor the relationship are taken to fruition. Discussion in the JCM on Wednesday will help us anchor some of the discussions going forward. There has been discussion on looking at a preferential trade agreement, between India and Oman and that should help kick start or rather put the relationship into a different trajectory all together.

Wheat consignments being sent to Oman, says Indian Envoy to Muscat Amit Narang

The Commander of Royal&nbsp;Navy of Oman (CRNO) Rear Admiral Saif Al Rahbi will be on India visit from 14&nbsp;to 18&nbsp;February even as both sides increase military engagement.

The visit comes days after the visit of the Secretary-General&nbsp;of&nbsp;Omani&nbsp;Defence&nbsp;ministry, Mohammed Nasser Al Zaabi to India.&nbsp;Rear Admiral Saif's visit, who assumed charge last January is&nbsp;significant in terms of New Delhi's outreach to the new military leadership which was appointed under the new Sultan of Oman.&nbsp;

He will also visit&nbsp;operational facilities, ship building and&nbsp;repair facilities at Mumbai and Western&nbsp;Naval Command&nbsp;which deals with deployment of ships in the gulf.

The key focus during India visit will be&nbsp;India-Oman Navy to Navy Staff Talks that will take place from 15&nbsp;1o 18&nbsp;February. CRNO will be visiting the IFC-IOR or Information&nbsp;Fusion Centre for the Indian Ocean Region&nbsp;with emphasis on early&nbsp;operationalization of Information Exchange.&nbsp;Information Fusion Centre Indian Ocean Region is Gurugram based Indian Navy's eye in the region.&nbsp;

The Centre has linkages with more than 50 nations and multinational/ maritime security centers. It hosts International Liaison Officers (ILOs) from 10 partner nations - Australia, France, Japan, Maldives, Mauritius, Myanmar, Seychelles Singapore, United Kingdom, United States of America. More ILOs are expected to join it in near future.

Training and naval&nbsp;equipment procurement from India will dominate the talks between Indian side and CRNO, who is also the&nbsp;Chairman Maritime Security Committee of Oman.

Both countries already have a&nbsp;White Shipping Exchange Agreement.&nbsp;The then Indian Navy Chief Karambir Singh had visited Oman last September. Last Visit by Oman Navy Chief to India was undertaken in September 2017.&nbsp;The west Asian country also provides critical operational support to Indian naval deployments in the Arabian sea for anti-piracy missions and actively participates in the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS).

More high-level engagements are seen between Indian, Omani military leadership. Chief of Oman's Air force will also visit India soon even as Jodhpur will see Air exercises between the two&nbsp;countries later this month. The annual bilateral air exercise this year will see the participation of over 150 personnel from Oman.

Oman is the only country in the Gulf region with which all 3 services of the Indian armed forces conduct regular bilateral exercises and staff talks. Oman is India’s closest defence partner in the Gulf region and Defence exchanges are a part of a framework MOU which was renewed in 2021.
