The gruelling annual college entrance exam known as the "gaokao"&nbsp;is not an ordinary test. It is notorious for being one of the toughest exams in the world.

It is China's version of the American SAT and the Indian IIT-JEE. In mandarin, "gaokao" translates into "high exam" - it is a title the annual test certainly lives up to!

Gaokao is something Chinese students spend 12 years preparing. It is the lone criterion for admission into Chinese universities. It lasts for 10 hours spread over two days of incredibly complex questions.

"Excitement is the only word to describe my feeling now. I have raised my child for 18 years, and now he is facing the biggest test in his life, I can only expect him to do well in the exams," a parent of a student said.

Contrary to the excitement of the parents, the&nbsp;exam is baptism by fire for the Chinese students. China has a history of pushing students to the edge. In 2012 shocking images had emerged of students taking intravenous injections while studying for the exam. In 2014, a poor gaokao score pushed an 18-year old to the edge as he took his own life when the result came out.

While the exams may be tough but&nbsp;gaokao's standing in the list of the world's toughest exams needs to be examined.

India has the IIT-JEE - a veritable nightmare for engineering hopefuls as over half a million students take the&nbsp;exam every year with only a few thousand making the cut.

The IIT-JEE may be tough but India's CA is another hard nut to crack. A three-level examination conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India in which lakhs of students appear with less than 8 per cent students who ultimately clear the three levels.

China's gaokao: One of the toughest exams in the world

As many as 32 out of the 50 students of the Indian Army's Kashmir Super-50 free engineering coaching institute in Srinagar have cracked this year’s IIT-JEE (Advanced), the results of which were announced on Sunday.

The outgoing batch is the fifth batch of Kashmir Super 50 which had 45 boys based in Srinagar and five girl students based in Noida. &nbsp;

Out of which this year, 32 students (30 boys and 02 girls) have cleared IIT-JEE Mains and seven students have cleared IIT-JEE Advance.

Project 'Kashmir Super 50' has been one of the most successful projects undertaken by the Indian Army in the valley and has directly impacted the lives of a number of youths in J&K by providing them with the right guidance and opportunity to make a career for themselves.

The project has equally helped the families of these youths in their growth and prosperity. It is a major initiative towards bringing normalcy in the valley.

A group of 30 students, part of Kashmir Super 50 visited New Delhi and interacted with General Bipin Rawat, Chief of the Army Staff on 12 Jun 18.

The General shared his experiences while serving in these areas, with the students and motivated them to work hard & contribute actively to the nation-building process.

32 of 50 students from Army’s 'Kashmir Super 50' project crack IIT-JEE

The entrance examination for the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) will go completely online from 2018 to make logistics and evaluations easier, the Joint Admission Board (JAB) decided today.

The JAB, which is the policy-making body on IIT admissions, took the decision at a meeting here.

In the online mode, students will take up the examination at designated centres where they need to answer the questions on a computer instead of using pen and paper.

At present optical mark reading (OMR) sheets are used which need to be filled using pen or pencils and are evaluated by machines. 
 
In a statement, Director, IIT-Madras, and Chairman JAB 2017, Prof Bhaskar Ramamurthi said, &quot;It has been decided that the JEE (Advanced) will be conducted in online mode from 2018 onwards. Further information regarding the examination will be provided by the JAB in due course.&quot;

The Ministry of Human Resource Development had earlier introduced the option of taking the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Mains online.

The JEE-Mains is the entrance examination for admission to engineering courses offered across the country and a qualifying exam for JEE-Advanced which is required for admission to the prestigious IITs and NITs.

&quot;In order to make logistics and evaluations easier it was decided today that the JEE-Advanced should be made online,&quot; a JAB member said.

&quot;The concept was being discussed for many years, but it was necessary to have adequate infrastructure to conduct the exam online,&quot; the member added.

More than 13 lakh students took the JEE-Mains this year, with less than 10 per cent of them going online. Around 2.2 lakh students were eligible to write the JEE (Advanced).&nbsp;

IIT entrance exam to go completely online from 2018

The Supreme Court prohibited the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) across the country from conducting counselling sessions or admitting students into the institutes till further notice this year.

The stay is over an 18-marks bonus being awarded to all students who appeared in the Advanced Joint Entrance Exams this year as the answer key to seven questions had been lost. It is applicable to all the institutes which use the IIT-JEE (Advanced) results for admissions.

A bench of Justices headed by Dipak Misra restrained the high courts from entertaining any writ petition relating to counselling and admissions to the IITs from now on.

It also sought details of the number of cases and petitioners challenging the IIT-JEE 2017 rank list. The apex court had issued notice to the Indian ministry of (MHRD) human resource development on a plea seeking an end to the IIT-JEE 2017 rank list.

The petition filed by IIT aspirant Aishwarya Agarwal, had sought the court&#39;s direction to declare that the action of awarding &quot;bonus marks&quot; to the candidates who had appeared in the JEE (Advanced) 2017 examination, was wrong and violated her right, as well as that of other students.

It sought a direction for preparation of the all-India rank list after rectifying the scores of JEE (Advanced) and also award marks to the candidates who had attempted the answers for the incorrect questions.

As an alternative, the petitioner said the institution should conduct fresh examination and prepare a fresh merit list or grant all students another opportunity to appear in the examination to be conducted next year.

The petition also sought an interim stay on the merit list and the counselling, saying it would cause serious prejudice to the petitioner&nbsp;and other deserving candidates.

The next hearing on the matter will be on Monday, July 10.
