A rare hummingbird that has been missing for more than a decade has been rediscovered by a birdwatcher in Colombia. Santa Marta sabrewing, a sizable hummingbird species exclusive to Colombia's Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta highlands, was last spotted in 2010. As the tropical forests it formerly called home have been mainly cleared for agriculture, scientists feared the worst and speculated that the species may have already gone extinct. But recently, a skilled local birdwatcher managed to photograph one, a discovery that ornithologists are delighted about.

There is a diverse range of fauna in northern Colombia's Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, including 24 bird species that are unique to the region.&nbsp;However, according to biologists, barely 15 per cent of the forest in the highlands is still intact.&nbsp;

Guardian reports that this is only the third time this species has been documented. It was identified for the first time in 1946 and again in 2010 when researchers managed to take its first images.

Yurgen Vega, who rediscovered the hummingbird while surveying endemic birds in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta with the conservation groups Selva, ProCAT Colombia, and World Parrot Trust, said he was "overcome with emotion" when he saw the bird.

Scientists hope that the unexpected appearance of the rare hummingbird will contribute to the preservation of their last surviving habitat, a move that will likely benefit the numerous species that can be found on the land.

The IUCN's Red List of Threatened Species lists Campylopterus phainopeplus or the Santa Marta sabrewing as critically endangered.&nbsp;

Young birds are frequently born with female feather coloration, but in the case of this hummingbird species, they are born looking like males, according to study author Jay Falk, who worked as a doctoral student at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute during this study.

He is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Washington in Seattle.&nbsp;

Experiments by the researchers revealed that the flashy male-like garb helped females avoid aggressive male behaviours during feeding, such as pecking and body slamming.

The researchers discovered that all of the young or juvenile Jacobins had bright colours when they examined the captured birds.

In most bird species, juvenile birds resemble the corresponding sex of adult birds.&nbsp;

The ornamental, flashy plumage of many species is thought to have evolved as a result of mate competition.

When the females were sexually mature and looking for mates, however, the majority of them lost their colourful plumage, indicating that so-called sexual selection was not the cause.&nbsp;

The skull, measuring about half an inch long, belongs to a bird called Oculudentavis khaungraae that lived during the Cretaceous Period.

The bird is tinier than the hummingbird and boasts many odd traits including jaws studded with numerous puny teeth.

None of the rest of the body was preserved, but the researchers estimated that Oculudentavis weighed approximately 28 grams and is 2 inches long.

"It's probably the most beautifully preserved Mesozoic bird skull I've ever seen, and it's so weird," said palaeontologist Jingmai O'Connor of the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology in Beijing, describing her reaction upon seeing the fossil.

The Mesozoic Era was the age of the dinosaurs.

Oculudentavis illustrates the almost-incomprehensible size difference among members of the dinosaur lineage.&nbsp;

Its eyes resembled those of owls, with the eye bones forming a cone, indicating acute vision, O'Connor said.&nbsp;

Oculudentavis appeared to be smaller than a bee hummingbird until now considered the world's littlest bird.

Oculudentavis shares few similarities, aside from size, with hummingbirds, which like all modern birds lack teeth and eat nectar.&nbsp;

Many Mesozoic birds had teeth, but Oculudentavis possessed 100 teeth which is the most in number. Unlike it, hummingbirds have long beaks.
