Israel said commando and paratrooper units launched raids into Lebanon on Tuesday as part of a "limited" ground incursion, while Iran-backed Hezbollah said it had fired a barrage of missiles into Israel, including at its spy agency headquarters and military base near Tel Aviv.

The raids by Israeli troops in southern Lebanon that began overnight were limited, and went only a short distance over the border, an Israeli security official said on Tuesday, adding that no direct clashes with Hezbollah fighters were reported.

Hezbollah's media relations chief Mohammad Afif denied Israel's claim that its forces had entered Lebanon.

Earlier, Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee had issued a warning in Arabic on X to residents in southern Lebanon because of what he said was intense fighting with Hezbollah.

"Urgent warning to the residents of South Lebanon. Heavy fighting is taking place in southern Lebanon, with Hezbollah elements using the civilian environment and the population as human shields to launch attacks."

The Israeli raids follow intense airstrikes that have devastated Hezbollah's leadership, including assassinating its chief Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut last week.

Israel's military said its ground raids will target Hezbollah strongholds along the border that threaten Israel and are not a war against the Lebanese people.

"Hezbollah turned Lebanese villages next to Israeli villages into military bases ready for an attack on Israel," military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said. Residents in southern Lebanon fled on Monday and Tuesday as Israeli strikes drew nearer, local sources told Reuters.

Hezbollah said in a statement on Tuesday that it had fired the "Fadi 4" at military positions in the suburbs of Israel's commercial hub, Tel Aviv. It is the fourth iteration of a series that has progressively bigger payloads and longer ranges that Hezbollah has begun to use in recent weeks.

The group also said it fired missiles at the headquarters of Israel's intelligence agency Mossad, blamed for assassinations of Hezbollah commanders and leaders, and at a military intelligence unit on the outskirts of Tel Aviv.

Israel's ambulance service said two people had been wounded by shrapnel from the barrage of missiles fired into Tel Aviv and the wider central Israel area. Traffic was also affected by part of a missile that fell onto a highway near the town of Kfar Qasim east of Tel Aviv.

Two Lebanese security sources told Reuters that Israeli units had crossed into Lebanon overnight for reconnaissance and probe operations. Lebanese troops also pulled back from positions along the border, the source added.

Lebanon is facing one of the most dangerous stages in its history, caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati said on Tuesday during a meeting with UN organisations and ambassadors of donor countries, in which they made a joint appeal for more than $400 million in aid to cope with surging hostilities.

Despite its biggest successes against Hezbollah in decades, Israel has indicated it is primed for a full-fledged invasion of Lebanon with the stated aim of enabling thousands of its citizens who fled Hezbollah rockets to safely return to their communities near the northern border.

Israel's strikes have displaced one million Lebanese from their homes and killed more than 1,100 people, Lebanese authorities have said. A looming ground offensive has sparked fear and anger in Lebanon.

"Not just Hezbollah, all of Lebanon will fight this time. All of Lebanon is determined to fight Israel for the massacres it committed in Gaza and Lebanon," said Abu Alaa, a resident of the southern port city of Sidon.

LEBANESE ARMY PULLS BACK

Iran's allies -- from Hezbollah to Yemen's Houthis to armed groups in Iraq -- have weighed in with attacks in the region in support of Hamas in the Gaza war, raising fears that the conflict will engulf the Middle East and suck in the United States and Tehran.

Yemen's Houthi movement targeted Israeli military posts in Tel Aviv and Eilat with drones on Tuesday, the group's military spokesperson Yahya Saree said in a televised speech.

Local residents in the Lebanese border town of Aita al-Shaab reported heavy shelling and the sound of helicopters and drones overhead. Flares were repeatedly launched over the Lebanese border town of Rmeish, lighting up the night sky.

An Israeli strike in Lebanon early on Tuesday targeted Mounir Maqdah, commander of the Lebanese branch of the Palestinian Fatah movement's military wing, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, according to two Palestinian security officials.

His fate was unknown.

The strike hit a building in the crowded Ain al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp near the southern city of Sidon, the sources said. It marked the first strike on Lebanon's largest Palestinian camp since cross-border hostilities broke out nearly a year ago.

Israel has not commented on the strike.

In Syria, three civilians were killed and nine others injured in an Israeli airstrike on the capital Damascus, Syrian state media said, citing a military source. Israel's military said it does not comment on foreign media reports.

Israel has been carrying out strikes against Iran-linked targets in Syria for years but has ramped up raids since the Palestinian militant group Hamas attacked Israel's southern territory on Oct. 7, 2023.

Hamas killed 1,200 people and took about 250 hostage in its assault on Israel, according to Israeli tallies. Israel, in response, launched a massive assault on Hamas in Gaza, killing more than 41,300 Palestinians, according to the Gaza health ministry.

STRIKES ON BEIRUT

Overnight, a series of strikes hit Beirut's southern suburbs after the Israeli military warned residents to evacuate areas near buildings it said contained Hezbollah infrastructure south of the capital.

In the past 24 hours, at least 95 people had been killed and 172 wounded in Israeli strikes on Lebanon's southern regions, the eastern Bekaa Valley, and Beirut, Lebanon's health ministry said early on Tuesday.

On Monday (Sep 30), the official called the leaks by the US "dangerous", saying that it has put the Israeli troops in danger, according to Kan news.

“This was done even though the US supports the operation," the official said, adding, "but it is clear to us that the US is worried — and therefore they outed the operation to try to limit it.”

Israeli official accuses US of endangering IDF soldiers by leaking Lebanon ground operation plans

New details have emerged regarding the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on September 27 in an Israeli strike on Beirut. Israeli news outlet Channel 12 has reported that the explosion itself didn’t kill Nasrallah but the 64-year-old militant most likely suffered asphyxiation as toxic gases leaked into his secret chamber.

Israel reportedly targeted the secret hideout of Nasrallah using 80 tonnes of “bunker-busting” bombs. The attack came as Nasrallah prepared to hold a meeting with senior Hezbollah leadership at the headquarters of the Lebanon-based militant group.

The strike was executed by Israeli Air Force (IAF) fighter jets at the group’s underground Central Headquarters, reportedly located beneath a residential building in the Dahieh area of Beirut.

According to media reports, Lebanese officials recovered Nasrallah’s dead body with no visible wound marks after the IDF strikes.

This indicates that he may have died of toxic gases in the room as the headquarters building came crashing down.

Chief Minister of the Indian state of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, criticised People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday (Sep 29) for showing "solidarity" with deceased Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

"Right now, there is a war going on between Israel and Palestine. The Israeli army killed Hezbollah commander Hassan Nasrullah. That is their country's business. But today, in Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti says she will not campaign because she is sad that Hasan Nasrullah has been killed. I want to ask Mehbooba, Farooq Abdullah, and Rahul Gandhi: When terrorists kill Hindu soldiers, do you feel sad or not?" Sarma was quoted as saying at an election rally in Haryana’s Sonipat by news agency ANI. What did Mehbooba Mufti say? Sarma’s comments came a day after Mufti, the former CM of Jammu and Kashmir, cancelled her election campaign on Sunday to show "solidarity with the martyrs of Lebanon & Gaza, especially Hassan Nasrallah." 'Crocodile tears': Mufti faces backlash for her Nasrallah comment "Why does Hassan Nasarullah's death pain Mehbooba Mufti? When Hindus in Bangladesh are attacked and killed, they are tight-lipped. Today, when the commander of Hezbollah gets killed, they cancel the campaigning for one day. These are crocodile tears and people understand the intent behind this. However, Iranian hardliners are dissatisfied with President Masoud Pezeshkian's government for its lenient approach following the death of Hezbollah chief Nasrallah, and they are demanding drastic measures from the government. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say in all state matters, vowed that Nasrallah's death "will not be in vain" and urged “all Muslims to stand with the people of Lebanon and the honourable Hezbollah,” but he did not call for any direct retaliation. This has disappointed many in the hardline camp, who were expecting a stronger response. As per a report by the Wall Street Journal, Israeli forces are "carrying out small, targeted raids into southern Lebanon, gathering intelligence and probing ahead of a possible broader ground incursion." The report said that the ground attack could happen as soon as this week. The report suggests that as part of Israel’s wider strategy to weaken Hezbollah’s strength near the Israel-Lebanon border, these operations have included entering Hezbollah tunnels along the border. Amir Avivi, a former senior military officer in Israel, told the Wall Street Journal that a ground invasion is approaching, and these small raids are part of the preparation process. “The IDF has made a lot of preparations for a ground incursion. Overall, this always includes special operations. This is part of the process,” Avivi told WSJ. Hezbollah deputy leader says the group is ready for any ground attack Meanwhile, Hezbollah’s deputy leader, Naim Qassem, in a televised speech on Monday (September 29), said that they are ready for any potential Israeli ground invasion. Qassem said Hezbollah would continue "confronting the Israeli enemy in support of Gaza and Palestine, in defence of Lebanon and its people, and in response to the assassinations and the killing of civilians." Since then, Israel has not slowed down its attacks on Hezbollah and targeted as many as 120 strongholds within two days. These attacks came days after a Friday airstrike on the southern suburbs of Beirut, which claimed the life of Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah. Here are the latest updates from the ongoing crisis in West Asia: Israeli air force hits 120 Hezbollah targets in Lebanon The Israeli military announced on Sunday night that it had launched more strikes on Hezbollah positions in Lebanon as cross-border air assaults persisted. Will attack enemies regardless of how far away they are: Israel Israel's Defence Minister, Yoav Gallant, said on Sunday that the country would attack its enemies regardless of how far away they are. This statement followed an Israeli military operation that targeted Houthi rebels in Yemen. "Our message is clear -- for us, no place is too far," Gallant said. The statement, released by his office, came after he observed the strikes from an air force command centre located approximately 2,000 kilometres (1,300 miles) from Yemen. Israeli military targets Houthi rebels in Yemen In response to recent events, the Israeli military carried out airstrikes on Sunday, targeting several Houthi rebel sites in Yemen. These strikes reportedly hit crucial infrastructure, including power stations and a seaport. The attacks were part of a broader retaliation after the Iran-backed rebels launched a missile targeting Israel's Ben Gurion Airport the day before. "In a large-scale air operation today, dozens of Air Force aircraft, including fighter jets, refuelling planes, and reconnaissance aircraft, attacked military-use targets of the Huthi terrorist regime in the Ras Issa and Hodeida areas of Yemen," said Captain David Avraham, a military spokesperson, in a statement to AFP. According to the military, "the IDF (military) targeted power stations and a seaport used for oil imports." Hezbollah says it fired ‘rocket salvo’ on two locations in Israel Iran-backed Hezbollah said that it had launched attacks on two locations in northern Israel. The militant said its fighters had fired a “rocket salvo” at Safed and a smaller nearby location. "This series of attacks killed 14 paramedics in two days," the ministry said in a statement. It condemned the repeated assaults on medical facilities, stating that "paramedics do not participate in hostilities." Israel accuses Hezbollah of using civilians as cover The Israel Defence Forces on Sunday claimed that the Hezbollah underground base, which they targeted on Friday, was just 53 metres away from a United Nations school in Beirut, Lebanon.
