Researchers have finally figured out why red wine, despite being one of the most consumed alcoholic beverages, induces headaches for some, even if they are fine drinking other alcohol.

And there have been cases where some even experience flushes and feel nausea even after consuming it in small amounts.

According to University of California researchers, who published their study in Scientific Reports, this happens because of a chemical compound present in red grapes that affects how the body metabolises alcohol in wine.

This compound is called quercetin, which is naturally found in fruits and vegetables, including grapes.

"We think we are finally on the right track toward explaining this millennia-old mystery," co-author Morris Levin, professor of neurology and director of the Headache Center at the University of California, San Francisco, said in a statement.

"Quercetin is produced by the grapes in response to sunlight," wine chemist and co-author Andrew Waterhouse, professor emeritus with the UC Davis Department of Viticulture and Enology, said in a statement.

"If you grow grapes with the clusters exposed, such as they do in the Napa Valley for their cabernets, you get much higher levels of quercetin. In some cases, it can be four to five times higher."

Quercetin is generally believed to be a healthy antioxidant and is sold as a supplement in the market. However, when mixed with alcohol, it can produce certain reactions that our body can’t handle.

"When it gets in your bloodstream, your body converts it to a different form called quercetin glucuronide," Waterhouse said. "In that form, it blocks the metabolism of alcohol."

<h2>Millennia-old mystery solved</h2>

Generally, there is a two-step process for how the body metabolises alcohol. The first converts alcohol in the form of ethanol to acetaldehyde. The second turns acetaldehyde into acetate, which is used to produce energy, carbon dioxide and water.

However, in the presence of quercetin glucuronide, this second step is disrupted, resulting in a buildup of acetaldehyde.

"Acetaldehyde is a well-known toxin, irritant and inflammatory substance," lead author Apramita Devi, a postdoctoral researcher with the UC Davis Department of Viticulture and Enology, said.

"Researchers know that high levels of acetaldehyde can cause facial flushing, headache and nausea."

The news report said that 30 deaths out of 67 reported cases&nbsp;at the hospital from June 20 to June 30 happened due to the delay in treatment as the patients earlier showed symptoms other than the regular symptoms.&nbsp;Therefore, the doctors have announced that if someone is suffering from diarrhoea, vomiting and headache, they too should get tested for coronavirus.

The doctors believe the virus is first attacking the gastro-intestinal track now, instead of the lungs. "These cases are presented as caused due to food-poisoning and seasonal change leading to stomach upset. But it is the virus which is attacking gastro-intestinal track first instead of lungs. It is presented in the form of severe diarrhoea and vomiting causing dehydration. This, in turn, leads to weakness, lower oxygen level, low BP, low sugar and sudden collapse," the report read.

It suggests that smartphone users were more likely to use pain medication for headaches and find less relief than those who didn't use smartphones.

The study was published in the medical journal 'Neurology: Clinical practice'. Researchers studied 400 people in India with headaches which included migraines, tension headaches and others.

They were questioned on their smartphone use, headache history as well as medication use. The study cites associations which suggest that smartphones may be a potential trigger for worsening headaches.

The study found that 96 per cent of smartphone users were more likely to take medication compared to 81 per cent of non-smartphone users.

In the study, smartphone users also reported a higher occurrence of "aura", which is a warning sensation before epilepsy or migraine attack.&nbsp;

This was in comparison to non-smartphone users. Medical experts believe that excessive smartphone screen time hampers your posture.

The act of bending your neck to look at your phone, dubbed as "text neck", maybe a strain on one's spine.

While this new research doesn't make any conclusive claims, it adds to the existing knowledge which warns against increased smartphone usage
