Following the outrage over iron spikes installed on the pavement of an HDFC Bank branch in Mumbai, the bank on Tuesday assured that they would be removed immediately.

"We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused to the public by the installation of the spikes at our Fort Branch, as part of the recent renovation. We're having the spikes removed on priority," the bank tweeted.

HDFC bank drew flak for installing multiple rows of iron spikes outside their Fort Branch here, which many saw as a move to prevent homeless people from sleeping on the pavements in the busy metropolis.

A number of individuals posted photos of, what looked like a bed of nails, on social media platforms. Some flagged up caution regarding the potential harm the spikes could cause to pedestrians, particularly to elderly people and children.

A Twitter user tagged HDFC Bank and said "This photo is of your newly opened branch at MG Road Fort Mumbai, besides Fabindia. Nice modern branch. BUT Why these hideous spikes? The BSE Sensex extended gains for the second straight day by rising about 139 points in opening trade on sustained buying by domestic institutional investors amid a firm trend at other Asian bourses.

The 30-share barometer, which had gained 318.48 points in the previous session, was trading higher by 138.52 points, or 0.41 per cent, at 33,490.09. Sectoral indices led by Metal, IT, Teck, Consumer Durables and FMCG led the gains, rising by up to 0.64 per cent.

On similar lines, the NSE Nifty was up by 35.35 points, or 0.34 per cent, at 10,278 points.

Traders said sentiment remained upbeat on increased buying by domestic institutional investors and a firm trend at other Asian markets, extending gains on Wall Street following signs from the White House that US President Donald Trump&#39;s tariffs may be softer than initially feared.

Major gainers that supported the upmove were Bajaj Auto, Bharti Airtel, Asian Paints, Tata Steel, Adani Ports, Hero MotoCorp, HDFC, ITC and Dr Reddy&#39;s, rising by up to 1.03 per cent.

However, Gitanjali Gems remained under selling pressure and traded 4.82 per cent lower at Rs 15.80.

Domestic institutional investors bought shares worth a net Rs 675.26 crore, while foreign portfolio investors sold shares worth a net Rs 364.80 crore yesterday, provisional data showed.

Globally, Hong Kong&#39;s Hang Seng was up 0.85 per cent, Shanghai&#39;s Composite rose 0.11 per cent and Japan&#39;s Nikkei went up by 0.87 per cent in early deals.

Sensex extends gains, up 139 points in early trade on global cues

Stocks staged a comeback in early trade with the BSE Sensex gaining over 157 points and the Nifty recapturing the 10,400-level on buying by investors in metal, capital goods, teck and IT stocks amid a mixed trend at other Asian Markets.

The 30-share Sensex recovered by 157.24 points, or 0.46 per cent, to 33,931.90 in opening trade. The index had lost 522.81 points in the previous two sessions.

Sectoral indices led by metal, capital goods, Teck and IT were trading in the green with gains of up to 0.75 per cent.

The broad-based NSE Nifty went up by 23.95 points or 0.23 per cent to 10,402.35.

Tata Steel rose up to 1.5 per cent in early trade after reports suggest the steel maker was leading bidder for debt-ridden Bhushan Steel.

IT stocks TCS, and Infosys also advanced up to 1.7 per cent on a weaker rupee.

Banking stocks ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and Yes Bank gained on value buying after recent losses.

Bharti Airtel, HDFC Ltd, L&amp;T, M&amp;M and ONGC also rose up to 1.4 per cent.

However, Punjab National Bank, embroiled in the Rs 11,300 crore scam, remained weak and shed another 3.31 per cent while Gitanjai Gems lost 9.91 per cent.

Brokers said buying by domestic institutional funds and investors amid a mixed trend at other Asian bourses improved the market sentiment.

Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought shares worth a net Rs 586.52 crore yesterday, as per provisional data.

Overseas, Asian stocks were trading mixed as Treasury yields climbed back toward recent four-year highs. Chinese markets will reopen on Thursday, 22 February. US markets remained closed yesterday, in observance of Presidents Day.

In the Asian region, Hong Kong&#39;s Hang Seng was up 0.66 per cent, while Japan&#39;s Nikkei was down 1.20 per cent in early trade today. Shanghai Composite remained closed for a public holiday.

Sensex recovers 157 points, Nifty above 10,400-mark

The Sensex and Nifty rose for a second consecutive session on Tuesday, as expectations of good earnings lifted industry heavyweights such as HDFC Bank Ltd and Infosys Ltd ahead of their results later in the day.

Shares of HDFC Bank and Infosys gained 0.4 per cent each. Earnings so far for the July-September quarter have proved to be solid, lifting indexes to record highs earlier this month.

Investors have been eagerly awaiting the last quarter&#39;s results after strong gains in share markets this year pushed valuations for the NSE index&#39;s price-to-earnings (PE) ratio to 21.3, well above the historic five-year average of 16.8.

The results also come at a time when the economy has slowed to a more than three-year low due&nbsp;to the lingering impact of a ban on high-value currency notes late last year and the rollout of a national goods and services tax.

&quot;People are expecting earnings to match the valuations this quarter,&quot; said Jayant Manglik, president, Religare Securities.

Sensex, Nifty gain in early trade, sentiment positive ahead of HDFC Bank, Infosys results

The BSE Sensex tanked 440 points to end at an over three-month low of 31,159.81 due to across the board selling by investors ahead of the expiry of September derivatives and weakness in the Rupee amid mixed global cues.

Extending its falling streak for the seventh straight session,&nbsp;the longest losing streak since&nbsp;December 22, the 30-share index fell by 439.95 points, or 1.39 per cent, to settle at 31,159.81 as RIL, HDFC, HDFC Bank, ITC, SBI and L&amp;T dropped.

This is the weakest closing since&nbsp;June 30&nbsp;when it had settled at 30,921.61.

The broader NSE Nifty cracked below the key 9,800-mark. It had regained the key 9,900-mark at the outset, but failed to hold on to the crucial level and dipped below the 9800-mark to hit a low of 9,714.40.

It finally settled down 135.75 points, or 1.38 per cent, at 9,735.75, it lowest closing since&nbsp;August 11&nbsp;when it closed at 9,710.80.

The September futures and options contracts are set to expire&nbsp;tomorrow, which made participants wait and watch.

Sentiments suffered another setback amid expectations of a rate hike by the US Federal Reserve later this year, accelerating the pace of outflows by foreign investors, offsetting unabated buying by DIIs, brokers said.

Escalating North Korean worries too continued to dampen trading sentiments.

In addition, the rupee quoting at over six-month low of 65.75 against the dollar in day trade too dented the sentiment further.

Tata Steel Ltd was among the top percentage losers on the index, plunging more than 4 per cent and pushing the Nifty Metal index lower.

Indian banking and financial services company, Household Development Finance Corporation (HDFC) aims to raise more money via so-called &quot;masala&quot; bonds after making its debut issue last month and other Indian companies may follow, the bank&#39;s executives said. 
 
Masala bonds are Indian rupee denominated bonds issued in offshore capital markets. These are rupee-denominated bonds issued to offshore investors settled in dollars and, therefore, the currency risk resides with investors. 
 
HDFC raised 30 billion Rupees on July 14 via the &#39;masala&#39; bond. 
 
Yielding 8.33 per cent and listed on the London Stock Exchange, the bond attracted 87 billion Rupees in bids. 
 
HDFC chairman Deepak Parekh and CEO Keki Mistry, speaking at the London Stock Exchange on Monday, told Reuters masala bonds were an opportunity for Indian firms to raise money, while giving international investors access to higher yields in a zero-yield world. 
 
&quot;India&#39;s need for funding for infrastructure is massive, the private sector has limited resources and the capacity of Indian banks to lend large sums of money is restricted by the amount of deposits they can mobilise,&quot; Parekh said.

Masala bonds can be more expensive than issuing bonds in the local market because of India&#39;s 5 per cent withholding tax on such international deals. But the HDFC executives said falling yields could make up for this as the market expands. 
 
They said several Indian companies were considering masala bonds despite the withholding tax. 
 
HDFC&#39;s bond has risen since its launch and now yields 7.78 per cent, they said. 
 
&quot;It&#39;s a new market ... and my sense was the first issue would be priced a bit higher but if we do a follow-on issue we will be able to do it at a lower cost,&quot; Mistry said. 
 
While thin secondary market liquidity is widely seen as a stumbling block for the masala market, Mistry pointed to the big order book as evidence that this might be changing. 
 
The executives also said HDFC had proceeded with a public issue rather than a private placement for SWFs because HDFC was keen to have a traded instrument. 
 
Parekh said Indian companies would like the withholding tax to be scrapped and are talking to the finance ministry.
