The government of Delhi reached out to the Central government and moved the Supreme Court appealing for additional water supply from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh for a month amid a severe shortage in the national capital.

In its petition submitted to the Supreme Court, the Delhi government said that there has been an increase in the demand for water in the national capital amid sweltering heat.

"Delhi's need for water has increased in the scorching heat. It is everyone's responsibility to fulfil the needs of the country's capital," stated the petition.

Delhi Minister Atishi wrote to the Central government regarding the water crisis and said that an adequate amount of water is not being released by Haryana.

"Delhi is heavily dependent on water from the Yamuna River for its day-to-day demand for water. However, since the last few days, there has been a drastic dip in the water levels at the Wazirabad Barrage as Haryana is not releasing the required amount of water in the Yamuna river," said Atishi, in a letter to Union Water Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.

"Moreover, the temperature in Delhi has touched almost 50 degrees. This has further intensified the demand for water," she said.

Various areas in the national capital including Chanakyapuri's Sanjay Camp area and Geeta colony in east Delhi have been battling acute water shortages.

The Chief Minister's promise of 24-hour water supply in Delhi has so far proved to be a trick. Haryana and Uttar Pradesh are continuously supplying their fixed quota of water to Delhi."

The fate of a total of 1,169 candidates will be sealed in the electronic voting machines (EVMs) in Haryana, which goes to Assembly polls on Monday amid tight security.&nbsp;

According to the office of Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), 1,064 male and 105 female candidates are in the fray.

The polling for 90 Assembly seats of the state will start at 7 am and will continue till 6 pm. The counting of votes will be done on October 24.

Joint Chief Electoral Officer Inder Jeet said that a maximum of 25 candidates is contesting the election from Hansi assembly constituency and a minimum of six candidates each from Ambala Cantt and Shahabad assembly constituencies.

Ninety candidates are from the Bharatiya Janata Party, 87 from the BSP, four from the CPI, seven from the CPI-M, 90 from the Congress, one from the NCP, 81 from the Indian National Lok Dal, 375 Independent and 434 other candidates are in the fray.

"130 companies of paramilitary forces have arrived in Haryana from the Centre and have been deployed in different districts of the State. A total of 19,578 polling stations have been set up in the State, out of which 2,987 vulnerable and 151 critical polling stations have been identified. Apart from this, special security arrangements will be made at these polling stations," said the official.

More than 40,000 Haryana Police personnel, over 13,000 paramilitary personnel and more than 20,000 Home Guards and Special Police Officers have been deployed for conducting the elections.The assembly election will witness a multi-cornered contest among BJP, Congress, Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and Jannayak Janta Party (JJP).&nbsp;

It may be noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has time and again targeted opposition parties in Haryana including Congress, INLD and Jannayak Janata Party for supporting dynastic politics.

"We have decided that relatives of MPs, mayors and district Council heads won`t get tickets in the upcoming assembly elections. In fact, MLAs will also be discouraged from seeking tickets for their family members. Unless there is an absolute emergency, we won`t be giving tickets to any relatives", said a senior party leader from the state.

It is learnt that both Khattar and Haryana BJP chief Subhash Barala were of a clear view that the party should not promote dynastic politics in the state.&nbsp;

State party leaders reiterated that there is no place for dynastic politics in the BJP and only people committed to the party`s ideology and the cause will be fielded in the polls.

The BJP feels that giving tickets to the kin of its leaders would send a wrong message to its cadre ahead of the Assembly polls.&nbsp;

"The party doesn`t want to disrespect workers who put in a lot of efforts and show commitment towards the organisation. We want to respect their sentiments by not offering tickets to the kin of leaders, as they may be perceived as outsiders," the sources said.&nbsp;

The 90-member state Assembly goes to polls on October 21. The counting of votes will take place on October 24.
