One person has died and dozens have fallen sick following a severe E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald's Quarter Pounder hamburgers, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said Tuesday.

The outbreak, which began in late September, spans 10 western states, with most of the 49 cases concentrated in Colorado and Nebraska, the health agency said.

Shares in the fast-food chain dropped more than six percent in after-hours trading following the announcement.

Ten people have been hospitalised, including one child with hemolytic uremic syndrome -- a serious condition that damages blood vessels in the kidneys.

"One older person in Colorado has died," a CDC statement said.

All affected people carried the same strain of E. coli and reported eating at McDonald's before developing their symptoms, with most specifically recalling having had Quarter Pounders.

While investigators have not yet pinpointed the exact ingredient causing the outbreak, they are focusing on slivered onions and beef patties -- both of which have been removed from restaurants in the affected states pending further investigation.

"Food safety is so important to me and everyone at McDonald's," said Joe Erlinger, president of McDonald's USA, in a video message. "We've taken steps to proactively remove slivered onions, which are used in Quarter Pounders, in select states.&nbsp;

"We've also made the decision to temporarily remove the Quarter Pounder from restaurants in select states."

He added the majority of states are not affected. In affected states, other menu items, including other beef products, remain available.

The agency advised those who consumed a Quarter Pounder and developed symptoms of E. coli poisoning -- such as diarrhoea, a fever over 102 degrees Fahrenheit (38.89 °C), and vomiting — to seek medical attention.&nbsp;

Symptoms typically begin three to four days after exposure, and most individuals recover within five to seven days without treatment. However, some cases can become severe and require hospitalization.

McDonald's quarter pounders tied to E. coli outbreak in US: 49 infected, one death reported

A police officer from San Antonio, Texas, shot at a 17-year-old boy who was in his car eating a burger in the parking lot of McDonald's. The officer was later fired.

The victim, Erik Cantu, is hospitalised with multiple gunshot wounds and "fighting for his life", his attorney Brian Powers said on Saturday, NBC News reported.

The incident took place on October 2, following which the officer, James, was put on probationary notice. However, a video from the officer’s body cam went viral on Friday, triggering outrage. He was then sacked on Saturday.

According to reports, the San Antonio Officer was responding to an unrelated distress call at the fast-food restaurant when he saw Cantu, who was unarmed, inside the car, police training commander Alyssa Campos said in a statement on Wednesday.

"As the officer attempted to gather information from witnesses, he noticed a vehicle that had evaded him the day before as the officer attempted a stop because the registered license plate did not match the actual vehicle," Campos added.

He said that Cantu’s car was not the subject of the disturbance call.

According to Campos, the officer assumed that the car was stolen and called “for cover”, but he nonetheless approached the vehicle before others officers could arrive.

Brennand then started open fire “abruptly” and ordered Cantu to get out.

"Get out of the car," the officer says to Cantu, the video shows.

The body-camera footage, which was released by the department, shows Cantu in the driver's seat eating a hamburger with a 17-year-old girl in the passenger's seat.

After getting injured, Cantu immediately drove away and stopped nearby where he and the girl, who was not injured, were found by police.

“There is nothing I can say in defence of that officer’s actions that night,” Police Chief William McManus told WOAI-TV.

“I think what happened, initially, there was some contact made, but that did not justify the shooting.”

“Reason prevailed, and climate sinners lost,” Nikolaj Villumsen, a member of the European Parliament from Denmark posted on Twitter. “It’s worth celebrating with a veggie burger.”

A proposal to expand a ban on descriptions such as “yogurt-style” or “cream imitation” for non-dairy replacements did pass, extending previous limitations on the use of words like “milk” and “butter” on non-dairy alternatives.

The proposed changes — a small part of a package of agricultural measures — received more attention than perhaps desired either by their proponents among meat and livestock groups, who said they would prefer to focus on helping farmers work sustainably, or the environmentalists and food manufacturers opposing it, for whom it is a distraction from the climate-change policy.

Jasmijn de Boo, vice president of ProVeg International, a group aimed at reducing meat consumption, said that the proposal was not in the interest of consumers or manufacturers and that shoppers were not confused by the labels currently on store shelves.

“Why to change something to a ‘veggie disc’ or ‘tube’ instead of a sausage?” she said. “It’s ridiculous.”

Those in favor of the change said that labeling plant-based products with meat terms were misleading and could open the door for other confusing labels.

“We simply call for the work of millions of European farmers and livestock sector workers to be acknowledged and respected,” Jean-Pierre Fleury, chairman of Copa-Cogeca, Europe’s largest farming lobby group, said in a statement this month. He described the use of meatlike names for plant-based products as “cultural hijacking.”

“Consumers are in no way confused by a soy steak or chickpea-based sausage, so long as it is clearly labeled as vegetarian or vegan,” she said in a statement after the vote. “Terms such as ‘burger’ or ‘steak’ on plant-based items simply make it much easier for consumers to know how to integrate these products within a meal.”
