Red Sea crisis weighs on already disrupted global supply chains

India is eyeing to present itself as an alternative to China in the global supply chains, according to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Speaking at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, USA, Sitharaman said India was planning to take on China through the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme and the growth of its domestic consumer market.&nbsp;

The PLI scheme has been one of the brightest working ideas to have come out of the NDA administration in India. Sitharaman pointed out that the scheme covers 13 manufacturing sectors, including semiconductors, which are bringing global value chains into India.

"By doing that, we hope to have production of many of these large, bulk-manufactured goods which can go from India to meet both international and local demand," said Sitharaman.&nbsp;

Sources said that New Delhi emphasised that it will "rally with like-minded partners and the WHO to improve sub-optimal approval and regulatory processes which are an impediment for stable and predictable supplies" even as it called for "implementation of the TRIPS waiver". The TRIPS coronavirus&nbsp;vaccine waiver was co-sponsored by India and South Africa at the WTO and aims to diversify local manufacturing so that covid vaccines are available to large segment of the global population.

US Secretary of State Blinken chaired the meeting that lasted for 2 hours. The meet saw India highlighting its development assistance to the international community by conducting 17 training modules for more than 60 countries on COVID management. Sources pointed out that at the meet India said that it will take its "experience in testing, treating and vaccinating a large population spread out in different geographies" to create "customized and tailor-made capacity building and technical training programmes" for healthcare workers in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

India has supplied over 162 million vaccine doses to 97 countries and 2 UN organizations. As part of the Quad summit outcomes of last year, a billion doses of India made vaccines will be delivered in the Indo Pacific in 2022. The Indian foreign secretary has also proposed the extension of the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) network of laboratories for genomic sequencing and surveillance in the neighborhood.

During the meet FS Shringla underlined the measures India has been taking domestically to deal with the covid crisis, which includes fully vaccinating 70% of the adult population, use of digital certification platform CoWin for vaccination purpose. New Delhi is in talks with WHO for an MoU for Sharing of CoWIN platform globally through WHO's C-TAP initiative.

Sources said, while mentioning how "India has worked effectively to contain the pandemic, protecting both lives and livelihoods", FS underscored the role of Indian Pharma Industry that "helped stabilise global supply chains for vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics during the acute phase of the pandemic".

Currently four WHO approved vaccines, COVAXIN, COVISHIELD, COVOVAX and JANSSEN,&nbsp;and three others due for approvals --CORBEVAX, ZyCov-D and Gennova--are being produced in India. It is estimated that the country has the capacity to produce 5 billion doses in 2022.

The joint open letter by the global transport chiefs have alleged world leaders of not offering them enough support in these difficult times, especially since it is the transport industry that has been putting their lives in risk to ensure timely delivery of medicines, PPE kits, masks and much more.<o:p></o:p>

"Transport workers keep the world running and are vital for the free movement of products, including vaccines and PPE, but have been continually failed by governments and taken for granted by their officials," the letter reads.<o:p></o:p>

The chiefs have asked for freedom of movement for transport workers and have urged the world leaders to ensure that they follow protocols that have been set up and motivated by international bodies. <o:p></o:p>

Keeping their safety in mind, they have also requested governments to prioritise transport workers when it comes to Covid vaccinations.

"We ask that our transport workers are given priority to receive WHO recognised vaccines and heads of government work together to create globally harmonised, digital, mutually recognised vaccination certificate and processes for demonstrating health credentials (including vaccination status and COVID-19 test results), which are paramount to ensure transport workers can cross international borders,"&nbsp;letter read.<o:p></o:p>

The industry has blamed world leaders of putting more strain on the transport workers by engaging in a blame game and failing to take quality decisions.<o:p></o:p>

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) celebrated a milestone with Boeing with the delivery of the 150th gun bay door for the F/A-18 Super Hornet.

The Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet is a twin-engine supersonic all-weather, carrier-capable multi-role combat jet delivering cutting-edge, next-generation multi-role strike fighter capability.

HAL has been Boeing's long-term supplier in India for over 25 years. Boeing awarded HAL the contract to manufacture gun bay doors for the Super Hornet in 2007.

"We are proud of our partnership with HAL. This delivery of the 150th gun bay door for the Super Hornet demonstrates that Indian suppliers are an integral part of Boeing's global supply chain," Salil Gupte, president, Boeing India, was quoted as saying in a statement.

"This milestone is yet another endorsement of our commitment to India, which is well recognised today because we've been investing and making in India for several years now," he said.

"Our investments in India are robust and ongoing, spanning technology, hi-tech innovation, production capacity, establishing a supply chain network, and developing skilling centres for aerospace manufacturing in India," Gupte added.

Boeing has offered to build a 21st-century aerospace ecosystem in India for manufacturing the F/A-18 Super Hornet with Indian partners, HAL and Mahindra Defence Systems (MDS), the statement said.
