<p>The 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, who has been called a “strong person of interest" by the police, had a "ghost gun that had the capability of firing 9 mm round and a suppressor” when the officials arrested him on weapon charges in Altoona, Pennsylvania, said New York Police Department Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny while speaking to&nbsp;reporters.<br />

Speaking to NBC, a senior law enforcement official said that the weapon found in the possession of Mangione appeared very similar to the weapon which was involved in the Manhattan murder.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kenny added that the weapon "may have been made on a 3D printer."</p>

<p>From 2016 to 2021, ATF reported that more than 45,000 suspected ghost guns were recovered from potential crime scenes by police.</p>

<p>People make ghost guns by using a 3D printer or they are assembled from a kit. The weapons can be made by spending less than $200, although an average price of around $500 has been placed by the officials, reported CBS News.&nbsp;</p>

<p>People can even buy kits of handguns as well as AR-15s and AK-47s from online platforms.</p>

<p>"But the gun kits they sell can be assembled in minutes by virtually anyone," said Mayor Kenny Wednesday.&nbsp;The city aims to hold the manufacturers accountable for the consequences arising from the use of these weapons.</p>

<h2><strong>Rising use of ghost guns in crimes</strong></h2>

<p>The city of Philadelphia has experienced a significant increase in the usage of ghost guns for criminal activities in the past four years. In 2019, 95 ghost guns were involved in crimes, which rose to 250 in 2020, doubled to 571 in 2021, and surged further to 575 in 2022, media reports said.</p>

<p>Philadelphia city officials seek both monetary damages and injunctive relief from the manufacturers. They assert that the lawsuit is intended to secure freedom for the citizens of Philadelphia, as individuals in neighbourhoods like Kingsessing and across the city often fear for their safety due to the presence of unregulated firearms. Representatives from JSD Supply claimed they were unaware of the lawsuit, while Polymer 80 did not respond to inquiries from Action News.</p>

<p>It is worth noting that other cities have also taken legal action against these manufacturers. Polymer 80 recently settled a lawsuit with Los Angeles, agreeing to pay $5 million in damages.</p>
