In the Flingern area, a building with many apartments and a kiosk on the ground floor of Lichtstraße and Grafenberger Allee caught fire at around 2:30 in the morning.&nbsp;

Locals reported hearing a huge blast, according to regional media site RP Online. It's unclear, though, if the explosion happened before or after the fire started. Subsequently, the fire extended to the nearby residential building. In addition, a number of parked automobiles that were in front of the business caught fire.

Approximately 100 firemen responded to the scene during the night. Residents escaped to balconies at the back of the home. The fire department then used ladders to rescue them from the burning and smoke-filled structure. "We carried out a massive rescue operation," stated a fire department spokeswoman told local media.

16 persons, including two with potentially fatal injuries, were attended to by emergency personnel and sent to a hospital, the spokeswoman said. Emergency services discovered three bodies. According to authorities, the fire was put out during the night.

Investigating the event, police and fire specialists were on the scene on Thursday morning.

A police spokeswoman stated, "The investigation is ongoing."

On Thursday, many roads surrounding the location remained blocked. There is an advisory for drivers to avoid the area completely.

Brehmschule primary school students must also arrange for diversion and take an extended route to school.

The structure was undergoing further safety precautions, according to the fire department, and there was rubble all across the roadway.

Bus and tram service is also disrupted.

There will likely be short-term cancellations and diversions as a result of the restrictions surrounding the fire site, which is preventing many Rheinbahn services from operating on their regular routes.

Police in Germany’s Hannover were on high alert on Saturday as a car ploughed into a crowd at a classic American car show. The incident ended up injuring at least five people, one of them critically.

The car show was held at the city’s Schützenplatz, an area designated for fairs and other community events of some 25 acres, DW reported.&nbsp;

Police said they were called to the area after reports of a car driving into the audience in an uncontrolled manner. Police on Twitter informed a large operation was being carried out at the incident site.

<h2>No terror link</h2>

After a preliminary investigation, police said a defect in the vehicle could have caused the “accident”.&nbsp;

Dennis Schmitt, a spokesperson for the police, confirmed the authorities didn’t find any terror connection and that the vehicle was impounded immediately for further investigation.

The police didn’t identify the car but a local newspaper quoted an eyewitness as claiming that it was a dark green Ford Mustang.

Local media also reported how the driver of the car made efforts to apply brakes and pull out the key to stop the car, but to no avail.

The eyewitness also claimed that the driver was in utter shock when he came out of the car after hitting the victims.&nbsp;

Some victims were reportedly tossed several metres away. Local media quoted another eyewitness as saying that the tyres on the vehicle spun as it suddenly accelerated before it pulled to the left and into the crowd.
