Democrat vice president candidate Tim Walz has slammed his Republican rival JD Vance for commenting that school shootings were "a fact of life". Vance made the statement in the aftermath of the devastating Georgia school shooting where four people were killed.&nbsp;

Addressing an LGBTQ+ advocacy group on Saturday (Sep 7), Walz went all out against Trump's VP pick, adding that such events were "not a fact of life".

“It’s a fact of life some people are gay. But you know what’s not a fact of life? That our children need to be shot dead in schools,” Walz said.&nbsp;

“That’s not a fact of life. Folks are banning books, but they’re okay with weapons of war being in our schools," he added.&nbsp;

The Minnesota governor continued attacks on Vance, stating that he wouldn't let Republicans lecture him on "family values".&nbsp;

“He’s got a plan on childcare costs that no one in the world understood a damn word about. We organize, we donate, we volunteer,” said Walz, referring to the Senate's vote on the Child Tax Credit that Vance missed.&nbsp;

Previously, Kamala Harris's campaign spokesperson had also called out Vance and Donald Trump for aligning with the interests of the gun lobby.&nbsp;

“Vice President Harris and Governor Walz know we can take action to keep our children safe and keep guns out of the hands of criminals,” Harris spokesperson Ammar Moussa said.&nbsp;

“Donald Trump and JD Vance will always choose the NRA and gun lobby over our children. That is the choice in this election," he added.

As many as four people were killed while at least nine others were wounded when the shooter, identified as 14-year-old Colt Gray, opened fire at&nbsp;Apalachee High School in Winder.&nbsp;

Gray's father, Colin, has been&nbsp;accused of second-degree murder for providing his son with a semiautomatic AR 15-style rifle.

Both father and son made their first court appearance on Friday and their lawyers declined to immediately seek bail.

Colt Gray, the 14-year-old suspect in the Georgia school shooting, was a loner, a student who sat next to him in class has said. The junior at the Apalachee High School has revealed Gray's weird behaviour moments before he opened fire, killing four, two pupils and two teachers.&nbsp;

Lyela Sayarath told CNN that she sat next to him on Wednesday morning in algebra class. "He never really talked, he wasn't (in school) most times, he would just skip class. Even when he would have talked, it was one-word answers," she told the channel.

This morning also, Lyela said, Gray was quiet as usual and had left the class minutes before shots rang. Lyela thought that he was skipping class because he left without a bathroom pass from their teacher. She said that she "wasn't surprised" when Gray was identified as the shooter.

Gray exited the class at 9:45 am and around half an hour later, active shooter alerts sounded in the school. A loudspeaker announcement told teachers to check their emails. That is when Gray reappeared at the door of the classroom, Lyela said.&nbsp;

Since no one thought that he might be the one carrying out the attack, a student went to open the door. However, he quickly noticed the gun in his hand and moved back. She says that Gray probably understood that they wouldn't open the door for him, so he went to the next class where the door was open and started firing.

He fired "a number of bullets one after another". "When we heard it, most people just dropped to the floor and like kind of crawled in an area like piled on top of each other," she said.

One of Lyela's friends witnessed someone get shot and had blood splattered on him. "He saw somebody get shot. He had blood on him. He was kinda limping. He looked horrified," she added.

Gray injured nine others before surrendering when confronted by the police officers. Mason Schermerhorn, an autistic 14-year-old student, was one of the deceased in Wednesday's shooting in Winder, Georgia.

Law enforcement officials are yet to ascertain whether it was a targeted shooting.&nbsp;

The firearm used by Gray in the shooting has not been identified and how he gained access to it is also yet to be ascertained.

Officials have said that Gray will be tried as an adult in the deadly shooting. Reports suggest that he had been on the FBI's radar for over a year for threatening to commit a school shooting. He and his father were interviewed at the time, but he denied making any threats. School officials were asked to keep a check on him.
