The Conference Board analysed publicly available data and found that the median total remuneration for women CEOs at S&amp;P 500 companies was $16.5 million in 2024, compared to $15.6 million for men.

A similar trend was observed at Russell 3000 firms.

The total average compensation for women CEOs was found to be $6.7 million, 0.6 million more than men’s $6.1 million.

Earlier in March, similar reports surfaced in New Zealand. Women CEOs in New Zealand earned an average salary of $5.9 million, more than twice their male counterparts, who had an average pay of $2.6 million.

Here, the women's participation in executive roles was also found to be the highest, at 40 per cent.

Australian women CEOs also earned more than their male counterparts in 2023. The median pay of women CEOs was estimated at $8.9 million, way more than the men’s $6.3 million.

But the above data doesn’t mean that women in general are earning more. It’s a matter of sample size. For instance, The Conference Board found in its analysis there were only 40 women CEOs, or a mere 7.9 per cent of all CEOs in the index.

So, on the whole, men are still earning more. According to Census data, the median woman working full-time earned 83 per cent&nbsp;of what the median guy made in 2023.

The Labour government in New Zealand said on Friday (August 11) that it plans to make it compulsory for large companies to publish gender pay gap data. The step has been taken in an effort to ensure that woman in the country get equal pay as that of men.

The government is due to face election in October this year. Currently, the Labour government is trailing in opinion polls. The elections will take place on October 14. In order for the gender pay gap policy to be legislated, the government will need re-election or gain bipartisan support after the polls.

The government has said that it initially plans to require 900 public sector companies to report their gender pay gap. These companies employ more than 250 employees each. After four years, the government plans to make the rule compulsory for all companies that have more than 100 workers in their employment.

“Countries we compare ourselves to including Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom have already successfully introduced gender pay gap reporting. We need to ensure we’re staying in line with international standards,” said Minister for Women Jan Tinetti.

“The reality is that women have different experiences in the workplace than men, and change is needed. Requiring companies to publish their gender pay gap will encourage them to address the drivers of those gaps and increase transparency for workers,” she added.

According to the data from New Zealand's Public Service Commission, the gender pay gap in the public service was 7.7 per cent as of June 30.

The governing Labour Party is currently lagging in opinion polls. A poll by the Taxpayers’ Union and Curia Market Research released on Thursday finds that the centre-right parties of National and ACT will have enough support to form a government.

CNN quoted a 2021 household survey done by New Zealand government and said that for each dollar&nbsp;a non-ethnic New Zealander male professional earned, his female counterpart earned 89 cents. The inequality is more in certain ethnic minorities. In case of ethnic Maori population, the women earned 81 cents to the dollar a man earned. In Pasifika population, women on an average earned 75 cents as compared to a dollar a man for the same community earned.

The New Zealand government is reportedly going to consult the public on the legislation. It hopes to seek feedback on reporting pay gaps in employees from ethnic communities.

According to CNN, the legislation is yet to be drafted. Considering there are only three weeks of parliament session remaining until general election in October, it is likely that a new government will have to take decision on implementation of the provisions.

In the USA also, 50 per cent of women&#39;s work is unpaid while in case of men the figure stands at 31.5 per cent.

An analysis of Global Gender Gap Index over the past years points to a continued under-use of the ever-increasing numbers of educated women than ever before, the report said.

&quot;While much of this imbalance is explained by the discrepancy in care-giving and unpaid work, institutional and policy inertia, outdated organisational structures and discrimination, one additional explanatory factor is the skills differentials in the types of degrees women and men seek out in their education,&quot; it added.

As per the report, the global average annual earnings for a female stood at US $12,000, while for a male it was as high as US $21,000.

It could take as long as&nbsp;170 years&nbsp;to establish gender&nbsp;economic equality, according to a study done by Geneva-based World Economic Forum.

In the global gender gap report released today, Pakistan ranked 143 out of 144 nations in the gender equality index. India was ranked 87th,&nbsp;Bangladesh 72nd, Sri Lanka 100th, Nepal 110th, the Maldives 115th and Bhutan 121st.

Yemen was the only country that fared worse than Pakistan.

The study measures discrepancies between men and women across four key areas -- health, education, economy and politics -- and the dismal results are a clarion call to ramp up efforts to close the gender gaps in pay and workforce participation.&nbsp;

Iceland and Finland took the top spot, followed by Norway, Sweden and Rwanda.

Rwanda has the highest share of women parliamentarians in the world.

Income equality has also improved in the eastern African country in the last few years, the WEF said.&nbsp;

Political empowerment

The United States ranked 73rd in the political empowerment gap. The gap is all the more disturbing as the country might elect its first woman president on November 8.

Gender gap at 59 per cent

The gender gap stands at 59 per cent, meaning that women have just 59 per cent&nbsp;of economic participation and opportunity as compared to men.&nbsp;

Around the world, 54 per cent of working-age women on average participate in the formal economy, compared with 81 per cent of men, according to the findings.&nbsp;

&quot;The number of women in senior positions also remains stubbornly low, with only four countries in the world having equal numbers of male and female legislators, senior officials and managers, despite the fact that 95 countries now have as many &ndash; if not more &ndash; women educated at university level,&rdquo; the report said.&nbsp;

The authors of the report,&nbsp;Richard Samans and Saadia Zahidi, told Guardian that they hoped their work &ldquo;will serve as a call to action for governments to accelerate gender equality through bolder policymaking, to business to prioritise gender equality as a critical talent and moral imperative, and to all of us to become deeply conscious of the choices we make every day that impact gender equality globally&rdquo;.

Bangladesh was ranked 72nd, India 87th and Pakistan 143rd in the gender equality index

It could take as long as 170 years to establish gender economic equality, according to a study done by Geneva-based World Economic Forum. In the global gender gap report released today, Pakistan ranked 143 out of 144 nations in the gender equality index. India was ranked 87th, Bangladesh 72nd, Sri Lanka 100th, Nepal 110th, the Maldives 115th and Bhutan 121st. Yemen was the only country that fared worse than Pakistan. The study measures discrepancies between men and women across four key areas -- health, education, economy and politics -- and the dismal results are a clarion call to ramp up efforts to close the gender gaps in pay and workforce participation. Iceland and Finland took the top spot, followed by Norway, Sweden and Rwanda. Rwanda has the highest share of women parliamentarians in the world.
