There was no immediate comment from Bankman-Fried.

The new indictment said Bankman-Fried conspired with two former FTX executives to donate tens of millions of dollars in order to influence lawmakers to pass legislation favorable to the company.

Those donations were unlawful because they were made with "straw" donors or corporate funds, enabling Bankman-Fried - one of the largest donors to Democrats in the 2022 midterm elections - to evade contribution limits, prosecutors said.

New criminal charges slapped on FTX founder Bankman-Fried

Failed cryptocurrency exchange FTX's Japan unit sai on Monday (February 20)&nbsp;that it would allow customers to withdraw deposits of fiat currency and crypto assets from Tuesday. This step has come after months of suspension.

FTX Japan said its customers could withdraw assets through the website of Liquid Japan, a crypto exchange it bought in February last year.

FTX, once the third-largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world, went bankrupt in 2022. Its founder Sam Bankman-Fried faces fraud charges and is currently being tried in the US. Last week, Bankman-Fried attended the court in Manhattan. He had pleaded not guilty to fraud charges.

The hearing that took place last week came after prosecutors asked US District Judge Lewis Kaplan to ban Bankman-Fried from using the internet except to review evidence against him or use email on his Gmail account, citing his use of a virtual private network (VPN) that could have let him hide some online activity.

Kaplan had already banned Bankman-Fried from contacting current or former employees at his now-bankrupt exchange and Alameda Research hedge fund, and from using encrypted messaging apps such as Signal that let users auto-delete messages.

Bankman-Fried's communications became an issue when prosecutors said he sought to contact FTX's current chief executive John Ray, and an in-house lawyer.

Defense lawyers have said the attempts to contact FTX officials were efforts to help, not interfere.

FTX Japan says it would allow customers to withdraw assets

Federal prosecutors have seized nearly $700 million in assets from&nbsp;FTX&nbsp;founder Sam Bankman-Fried in January, largely in the form of Robinhood stock, according to a court filing on Friday.&nbsp;Bankman-Fried, who has been accused of stealing billions of dollars from&nbsp;FTX&nbsp; customers to pay debts incurred by his crypto-focused hedge fund, has pleaded not guilty to fraud charges. He is scheduled to face trial in October.

The Department of Justice revealed the seizure of Robinhood shares earlier this month, but it provided a more complete list of seized assets Friday, including cash held at various banks and assets deposited at crypto exchange Binance.

The ownership of the seized Robinhood shares, valued at about $525 million, has been the subject of dispute&nbsp;between Bankman-Fried,&nbsp;FTX, and bankrupt crypto lender BlockFi.

The most recent asset seizure reported by the DOJ took place on Thursday, when prosecutors seized $94.5 million in cash from an account at Silvergate Bank which was associated with&nbsp;FTX&nbsp;Digital Markets,&nbsp;FTX's subsidiary in the Bahamas. The DOJ seized more than $7 million from other Silvergate accounts associated with Bankman-Fried and&nbsp;FTX.

The DOJ previously seized nearly $50 million from an&nbsp;FTX&nbsp;Digital Markets account at Moonstone Bank, a small bank in Washington state.

DOJ also said that assets in three Binance accounts associated with Bankman-Fried were subject to criminal forfeiture, but did not provide an estimate of the value in those accounts.

Following the footsteps of embattled FTX and BlockFi, another cryptocurrency lender Genesis Global Holdco LLC, and two of its subsidiaries have filed for bankruptcy in New York court, indicating how the crypto fall has created a ripple effect in the market.

Genesis Global Holdco, Genesis Global Capital, and Genesis Asia Pacific, filed voluntary petitions under the bankruptcy code for with the Southern District of New York court.

It, however, added that Genesis' derivatives and spot trading, broker-dealer, and custody businesses were not part of the bankruptcy process, and would continue their client trading operations.

Genesis’ lending unit said it had both assets and liabilities in the range of $1 billion to $10 billion, and more than 100,000 creditors in its filing.

In a statement, Genesis Global Holdco said that it is mulling to push for a potential sale or equitisation transaction to pay creditors, claiming that it had $150 million in cash to support the restructuring.

The men, who have not been identified, then got back in the car and drove away.

The lawyers, however, did not specify when the incident took place, describing it only as recent.

Their brought up the incident in the court in response to a major push from the media organisations to make public the names of two people who helped guarantee Bankman-Fried's bond alongside his parents.

Bankman-Fried told BBC from the Bahamas that he would “give anything” to start a new business to help his customers who lost their investments.

“I’m going to be thinking about how we can help the world, and if users haven’t gotten much back, I’m going to be thinking about what I can do for them,” Bankman-Fried told the BBC.

“And I think at the very least I have a duty to&nbsp;FTX&nbsp;users to do right by them as best as I can.”

Embattled crypto trader and co-founder of FTX Sam Bankman-Fried was released on $250 million bail a day after accepting to be extradited from the Bahamas.

The 30-year-old crypto mogul faces eight criminal charges, including wire fraud, money laundering and campaign finance violations.

US magistrate judge Gabriel Gorenstein made the ruling on Thursday in federal court in Manhattan said Bankman-Fried would have to remain under strict supervision at his parents’ home in Palo Alto, California.

He was flown back to New York City from the Bahamas on Wednesday and was placed under FBI custody after he dropped his right to challenge the US government's extradition request.

As per the bail conditions, Bankman-Fried will be monitored via an ankle bracelet, and has been asked to surrender his passport and agree to mental health and substance abuse treatment.

The magistrate warned the crypto trader that an arrest warrant would be issued against him if he violates any of the conditions and that his parents would be liable $250m for the bond, reports AFP news agency.

After the judge asked Bankman-Fried if he understood the bail requirements, he replied, “Yes, I do.”

FTX and its sister trading house&nbsp;Alameda Research went bankrupt last month, dissolving a virtual trading business that at one point had been valued by the market at $32 billion.

A report by the Associated Press on Friday said that since FTX's collapse in November, there has been growing scrutiny on campaign donations that Bankman-Fried made to lawmakers, campaign committees and Super PACs.&nbsp;

The total amount includes donations the former FTX CEO made directly to the DNC as well as the Democratic Grassroots Victory Fund and the Biden Victory Fund.&nbsp;

“We will return as soon as we receive proper direction in the legal proceedings,” Wessel said.

Similar statements were issued by the official campaign arms of Senate and House Democrats- the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) and the&nbsp; 
Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC).&nbsp;

Some lawmakers told the news agency that they will donate Bankman-Fried's contributions to charity while others will set aside the money until further legal guidance.&nbsp;

"The FTX group's collapse appears to stem from absolute concentration of control in the hands of a small group of grossly inexperienced, non-sophisticated individuals," said Ray. He was named CEO of FTX after Bankman-Fried stepped down and company filed for bankruptcy on November 11.

Ray also said there was virtually no distinction between the operations of FTX and Alameda Research, Bankman-Fried's crypto trading firm, which maintained close ties with his exchange.

"I've just never seen an utter lack of record keeping - absolutely no internal controls whatsoever," Ray told the US House of Representatives Financial Services Committee.

There was not any immediate comment from Bankman-Fried on Ray's testimony.

He said he was shocked to learn FTX was using Quickbooks - software geared toward small and mid-size businesses - for accounting and approving invoices via Slack messages.

Asked why he had testified that he did not believe the audited financial statements were reliable, Ray said: "We've lost 8 billion dollars of customer money. So by definition, I don't trust a single piece of paper in this organization."

It will take weeks, perhaps months, to secure all the group's assets, Ray said, warning it would be a lengthy process.

"At the end of the day, we're not going to be able to recover all the losses here," he said.

As Bankman-Fried grew&nbsp;FTX&nbsp;into one of the world’s largest crypto exchanges, consumer protection was a central tenet of his pitch for crypto regulation in the United States. Bankman-Fried stressed this theme in countless statements to customers, investors, regulators and lawmakers.&nbsp;FTX’s auto-liquidation&nbsp;software&nbsp;would protect everyone, he had claimed.

In congressional testimony on May 12, he called&nbsp;FTX’s&nbsp;software&nbsp;“safe, tested and conservative.”

“By quickly unwinding the riskiest, most undercollateralized positions, the risk engine prevents build-up of credit risk that could otherwise cascade beyond the platform, resulting in contagion,” Bankman-Fried had testified.

He did not tell lawmakers about the&nbsp;software&nbsp;change&nbsp;to exempt Alameda. Indeed, he told investors that Alameda received no preferential treatment from&nbsp;FTX, the SEC complaint said.

Bankman-Fried had directed subordinates to update the&nbsp;software&nbsp;in mid-2020 to enable Alameda to maintain a negative balance on its account, the SEC complaint said. No other customer account at Alameda was&nbsp;allowed&nbsp;to do so, the complaint added. This would allow Alameda to keep borrowing more&nbsp;FTX&nbsp;funds without the need to provide more collateral.

In&nbsp;software&nbsp;tweaks made in August 2020, Alameda was designated as the “Primary Market Maker” or “PMM,” according to a Reuters review of its codebase. Market makers are dealers who enable trading in an asset by standing ready to buy and sell it.

To explain the&nbsp;change, Singh, the chief engineer, inserted a comment into the code: “Alameda would be liquidating, prevented.” He included a warning “not to liquidate the PMM."

Only Singh, Bankman-Fried and a few other top&nbsp;FTX&nbsp;and Alameda executives knew about the exemption in the code, according to three former executives briefed on the matter. A digital dashboard&nbsp;used by staff to track&nbsp;FTX&nbsp;customer assets and liabilities was programmed so it would not take into account that Alameda had withdrawn the&nbsp;client&nbsp;funds, according to two of the people and a screenshot of the portal that Reuters has previously reported.

Bankman-Fried's house&nbsp;of cards "began to crumble" in May 2022, the SEC complaint said.

As the value of crypto tokens plummeted that month, several of Alameda's lenders demanded repayment. Since Alameda didn't have the funds to meet these requests, Bankman-Fried directed Alameda to tap its "line of credit" with&nbsp;FTX&nbsp;to obtain billions of dollars in financing, the complaint said.

Ultimately, when&nbsp;FTX&nbsp;customers dashed to withdraw their&nbsp;money&nbsp;this November, spooked by media reports about the company's financial health, many discovered that their funds were no longer there.

Sam Bankman-Fried, or SBF, known as the "cryptocurrency genius", was arrested on Monday (December 12) in the Bahamas at the request of the United States.&nbsp;Last month, he announced his resignation from FTX after facing a loss of 94 per cent of his net worth.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The "cryptogenius," also known as "modern JP Morgan"&nbsp;for his intervening to save volatile exchanges, has now been charged with&nbsp;defrauding investors in the company, by the United States&nbsp;Securities and Exchange Commission.&nbsp;The arrest was made on the eve of Bankman-Fried's scheduled appearance at a US Congress hearing. 
 
Who is SBF?&nbsp;

The&nbsp;30-year-old&nbsp;began his career as a trader at Jane Street and eventually amassed a crypto empire.&nbsp;SBF studied Physics at MIT, and after joining Jane Street, in 2017, he learned about cryptocurrencies and began using his expertise in the market. In his early days, he started by purchasing bitcoin in the US and used to sell them in Japan, a minimum price of at least 10 per cent due to price difference. &nbsp;

In&nbsp;2017, SBF established his own cryptocurrency trading firm 'Almeda Research,' which offers liquidity in exchange for digital assets and cryptocurrencies.&nbsp;Two years later, in 2019, he launched FTX, turning it to be one of the top exchanges for buying and selling cryptocurrency derivatives. Forbes estimates his exchange is worth $40 billion.

The committee said that investigations of "securities law violations and into other entities and persons relating to the alleged misconduct are ongoing.”

The FTX founder has also been charged with allegedly using&nbsp;FTX customer funds, commingled with Alameda for large political donations, lavish real estate&nbsp;purchases, and undisclosed investments in ventures. Additionally, even though the company is based in the Bahamas since FTX raised $1.1 billion from at least 90&nbsp;US-based investors, the SEC will oversee the case, the agency asserted.&nbsp;

During the hearing, the SEC also&nbsp;used&nbsp;FTX's collapse&nbsp;as an example to highlight the "very real risks that unregistered crypto asset trading platforms can pose for investors and customers alike,” said&nbsp;Gurbir Grewal, the agency's director&nbsp;of the division of enforcement.

He added,&nbsp;that while the investigation is underway for&nbsp;potential violations of federal securities laws, they are also holding&nbsp;Bankman-Fried responsible for "fraudulently raising billions of dollars from investors in FTX and misusing funds belonging to FTX’s trading customers.”
