Former France manager Laurent Blanc has been hired as coach of Al-Ittihad, the Saudi Arabian club announced on Saturday.

Blanc, who had been out of work since being fired by Lyon last September, will be reunited in Jeddah with one star from his 2012 Euro squad, Karim Benzema.

After the team finished fifth in the Saudi league last season, the 36-year-old striker, the club's star recruit, reportedly campaigned for a French-speaking coach.

This prompted the resignation of club president Louay Nazer, who had reportedly reached an agreement with Italian Stefano Pioli, who had left AC Milan.

The Al-Ittihad squad also includes N'Golo Kante, a starter in the France team that reached the last four at the current Euros, and former Monaco and Liverpool Brazilian Fabinho.

The 58-year-old Blanc was at the heart of the France defence as they won the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.

In his second season as manager, he led Bordeaux to a League 1 title. He coached France from 2010-12.

He guided Qatari-own Paris Saint-Germain to three Ligue 1 titles and five domestic cups between 2013 and 2016, had a stint in Qatar with Al-Rayyan from December 2020 to February 2022 and a painful 11 months from October 2022 when he was unable to reverse Lyon's decline.

Al-Ittihad have not specified the length of Blanc's contract.

He will be the club's third coach in a year following Nuno Espirito Santo, who led the club to a ninth Saudi title in 2023, and Marcelo Gallardo.

Last season the club finished only fifth in the table, 42 points behind runaway champions Al-Hilal. They failed to qualify for the Asian Champions League.

Argentine Gallardo, who dropped the misfiring Benzema for a time, was fired in July after less than seven months in the job.

Strategic autonomy refers to a nation's ability to pursue its own interests and make decisions and this has been a key foreign policy pillar for both India and France. The US Ambassador Eric Garcetti was seen criticising India's policy of Strategic autonomy in the backdrop of PM Modi's Russia visit last week. Garcetti said, "I respect that India likes its strategic autonomy. But in times of conflict, there is no such thing as strategic autonomy".

The last year has been an intensification of ties between India and France, with several high-level visits.

Last year, PM Modi was the chief guest at the French National Day at the Champs Elysée in Paris, where both nations agreed on the Horizon 2047 Roadmap. France captain Kylian Mbappe conceded that his Euro 2024 campaign was a failure. France exited the continental championship with 2-1 loss against Spain in the semifinal on Tuesday (Jul 9).

"My competition? It was difficult," Mbappé told reporters after the game. "It was a failure. We had the ambition to be European champions; I had the ambition to be European champion. We aren't that, so it's a failure."

"It's football. We have to move on. It's been a long year. I'm going to go on holiday and get some rest -- that'll do me a lot of good, and I'll try and come back strongly," the Real Madrid forward added.

France lost the semifinal despite taking an early lead in the game. Kolo Muani converted a header on a brilliant Kylian Mbappe assist in the eighth minute to get France ahead.

Rattled by the early goal, Spain got into charged up mode almost instantly, making several attempts to equalise the score. The moment came soon about 12 minutes with Lamine Yamal netting the equaliser for Spain.

Yamal, aged 16 years and 362 days, is now the youngest ever goal scorer in the Euro championship. He overtook the record set by Swiss player Johan Vonlanthen, who had also scored against France in Euro 2004, aged 18 years 141 days.

Four minutes later, Yamal was again in action as he slipped a pass to Dani Olmo. Olmo immediately passed to Nava who then crossed it back towards Olmo who touched it delicately towards the goal.

France's Kounde, however, touched the ball in the end before it went in but the referees gave it to Olmo.

Unions representing workers at Paris' airports said Monday (Jul 8) they had called for a strike the week before the Paris Olympics over a dispute about bonuses for staff.

The CGT, CFDT, FO and UNSA unions called the strike on July 17 -- nine days before the start of the Paris Games -- to demand that all staff receive an Olympics bonus, denouncing "unilateral decisions from the chief executive to pay a bonus to only some personnel."
