The International Cricket Council(ICC) general manager of anti-corruption unit Alex Marshall revealed several alarming facts about corruption in cricket during his speech on the Media Day at the ICC Headquarters in Dubai on Monday.

India, a country which considers cricket as its religion, is the centre of fixing and corruption, Marshall said, "Corruption happens in every single cricket playing country. Most of the bookies are based in one area. The corruptors are mostly Indian bookies. But the corruption happens everywhere."

Marshall informed that ICC is trying hard to keep the game clean and declaring that 32 investigations were launched in the last 12 months in which "eight" players were "suspects".

"There have been more than 30 investigations in the last 12 months, eight involve players as suspects," he added. "Five internationals captains have reported receiving approaches to spot-fix."

"Five international captains have been approached. You are not going to get the names. Four of them are from full member countries and one from a non-full member country," Marshall said.

Marshall said that the T20 format of cricket has given the corruptors new opportunities to tarnish the game.

"The corruptors like the explosion in T20 tournaments. It's, of course, great to have so many T20 events. It's really good, but the corruptors see that as a new opportunity. They try to get into the franchises, they try to be the financial backers, they try to gain influence over the tournament. So they love the T20s," he said.

"If they (corruptors) can't get into someone else's T20 tournament, they design their own corrupt tournaments and we have seen examples of corruptors who create an entire event only for the purposes of corruption," said Marshall, referring to the 2016 Masters Champions League in UAE.

While Alex also mentioned that the spirit of the game is intact referring to the recent team India example when Virat Kohli-led team gave a farewell to Alastair Cook with a special guard of honour.

Five cricket captains approached to spot-fix last year: ICC anti-corruption unit

A day after a British tabloid levelled spot-fixing charge on the Ashes Test currently underway at Perth, the International Cricket Council(ICC) said it did not think the match has been compromised.

The Sun on Wednesday in its report had said two bookies had offered to sell the newspaper details of today's Perth Test between Australia and England declaring periods of play had been rigged for millions of pounds.

The newspaper said two individuals asked for 140,000 pounds to "spot-fix", calling the players "puppets". The newspaper reported that the two individuals claimed to be working with a fixer in Australia known as "the silent man".

Alex Marshall, ICC General Manager Anti-Corruption said in a statement: "From my initial assessment of the material, there is no evidence, either from the Sun or via our own intelligence, to suggest the current Test match has been corrupted."

"At this stage of the investigation, there is no indication that any players in this test have been in contact with the alleged fixers," Marshall added.

The two individuals in the Sun report allegedly were Indians with close links to cricket establishment in India. The tabloid said it had filmed the two men secretly at hotels in Dubai and Delhi.

One of the individuals in the report said rates could be fixed from 1 crore to 5 crores. The newspaper said the Indians bragged about their links to the Twenty20 leagues in Australia's Big Bash and the lucrative Indian Premier League(IPL).

A spokesman for Cricket Australia said the body took "a zero-tolerance approach against anybody trying to bring the game into disrepute".

"Cricket Australia will co-operate fully with any ICC Anti-Corruption Unit investigation," the spokesman said.

"Australian cricket has a long-standing, proactive approach to sports integrity management. Players are able to report any suspicions they have on a confidential basis and in the past there has been a strong Australian player culture to do so," the spokesman said.

The ECB said: "We are aware of these allegations and there is no suggestion that any of the England team is involved in any way."
