While many found the characters undeveloped and the relationship between Anastasia and Christian borderline abusive, some were titillated by the BDSM element involved, which incidentally proved to be the USP of the franchise.

But Johnson, it appears, does not have entirely happy memories of the films. She took exception to the creative interference by James, the author, herself.

&nbsp;In an interview with Vanity Fair, she revealed, "I signed up to do a very different version of the film we ended up making. [E.L. James] had a lot of creative control, all day, every day, and she just demanded that certain things happen."

Johnson added that she had issues with parts of the books that would not work on the screen, like monologues "which was at times incredibly cheesy. It wouldn’t work to say out loud. It was always a battle. Always. When I auditioned for that movie, I read a monologue from Persona and I was like, "Oh, this is going to be really special." There were a lot of different disagreements. I haven’t been able to talk about this truthfully ever, because you want to promote a movie the right way, and I’m proud of what we made ultimately and everything turns out the way it’s supposed to, but it was tricky. We’d do the takes of the movie that [James] wanted to make, and then we would do the takes of the movie that we wanted to make. The night before, I would rewrite scenes with the old dialogue so I could add a line here and there. It was like mayhem all the time."

On the work front, Johnson will next be seen in 'Persuasion',&nbsp;based on the novel of the same name by Jane Austen. The&nbsp;Carrie Cracknell directorial also stars&nbsp;Cosmo Jarvis, Nikki Amuka-Bird,&nbsp;Richard E. Grant, and Henry Golding. The film will&nbsp;release on&nbsp;July 15, 2022 on Netflix.

Sourcebooks is an independent publisher, but Penguin Random House holds a 45 percent stake as a collaborative investor.

"It feels like I'm coming home — returning to my indie roots, and working with an innovative, dynamic, and hugely successful publisher who's always up for new ventures. It's an honor to be part of an imprint dedicated to amplifying creative women's voices."

&nbsp;According to Entertainment Weekly, James' net worth has been valued in the hundreds of millions, and her books account for a significant chunk of that, making this a financial feather in Sourcebooks' cap.The new imprint is said to focus on entrepreneurial female authors, those in the vein of James herself who have taken a more hands-on approach to their publishing journey (James famously got her start writing fanfic).

Called 'The Mister,' the novel by British author E.L. James will be published in Britain and North America on April 16, publishers Vintage Books said on Thursday.

The story, set in London and Eastern Europe, centres on an aristocratic Englishman who falls for a mysterious, musically gifted young woman who has recently arrived in England, the publishers said.

"I’m so excited to finally get this passionate new romance out into the world," James said in a statement.&nbsp;

"It’s a Cinderella story for the twenty-first century. Maxim and Alessia have led me on a fascinating journey and I hope that my readers will be swept away by their thrilling and sensual tale."

James`s 'Fifty Shades' trilogy, featuring bondage, discipline, dominance, submission and sadomasochism (BDSM), was first published in 2012 and shot to the top of best-seller lists around the world with 150 million copies sold.
