A US woman's worst nightmare came true when she realised the $718,000 jewellery that she purchased from an Indian shopkeeper over the last two years was actually worth a mere $4. The Rajasthan shopkeeper, from Jaipur's Johri Bazaar, reportedly sold fake jewellery to Cherish for a staggering amount. It was only in April that she realised that what she assumed to be real gold ornaments were actually fake pieces with gold polish.

The alleged scam came to light when Cherish put the 'ornaments' on display in an exhibition in the US earlier this year. After realising her costly mistake, she immediately booked her tickets to India and reached Jaipur to confront Gaurav Soni, the shop owner.

When Soni refused to address the lady's concerns, she approached Jaipur police and also sought help from the US embassy in Delhi.&nbsp;

In her police complaint, Cherish claimed she got in touch with Soni over Instagram and bought several pieces of 'gold' from him for a whopping INR 6 crore ($0.7 million). But the actual worth of the items turned out to be just $4.

Soni is currently at large along with his father Rajendra Soni. Police have launched an investigation into the matter and they have arrested a person accused of providing authenticity certificates for the fake jewellery.

“Investigations have revealed that the accused sold silver jewellery with gold polish, valued at ₹300, to the foreigner for ₹6 crore. They also provided her with a certificate of authenticity. Nand Kishore, who issued the fake certificate, has been arrested, and a search is underway for the absconding father and son,” a cop was quoted as saying by news agencies.
