European football’s governing body UEFA has officially confirmed the United Kingdom and Ireland as the hosts for the Euro 2028, after weeks of speculation.

UEFA on Tuesday (Oct 10) confirmed the news that the UK will host the continental showpiece after seven years. It was&nbsp;a joint host during the Euro 2020, which was held in 2021 as the event&nbsp;had to be moved due to Covid pandemic.

UEFA also confirmed Turkey and Italy as the hosts for Euro 2032 after the joint bid was submitted.

<h2>UEFA confirms Euro hosts</h2>

“Euro 2028 will take place in the UK and Republic of Ireland. Proposed venues include Belfast, Birmingham, Cardiff, Dublin, Glasgow, Liverpool, London (x2), Manchester and Newcastle,” a statement on UEFA’s social media handle read.

Euro 2028 will be the third time England will be part of the hosts, having hosted the tournament in 1996 when Germany beat the Czech Republic in the final while also playing co-host to the 2020 showpiece (in 2021), in which Italy beat England on penalties.

As things stand, there are nine proposed cities to host the matches of the continental showpiece including matches in Belfast, Dublin, London, and Newcastle. London could see two venues on offer with Wembley likely to host the final while Tottenham Hotspur’s home ground is another stadium in line to host the matches.

<h2>Turkey, Italy to host 2032 Euros</h2>

UEFA also confirmed Italy and Turkey as hosts for the Euro 2032 as they logged a successful bid.

Italy, the defending European champions will host the Euros for the third time, having last played as hosts in 1968 and 1980, winning the former tournament.

This will be Turkey’s maiden Euro at the senior level as hosts, having previously played hosts to multiple Champions League finals including the 2005 and most recently in 2023.

“Congratulations to Italy and Türkiye, co-hosts of #EURO2032! The joint bidders presented 20 potential host stadiums, of which 10 will be chosen, five per country, by October 2026,” a UEFA statement read.

The news comes days after FIFA confirmed hosts for the 2030 World Cup with six nations playing host for the tournament. This includes Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Spain, Portugal, and Morocco as the tournament takes place in three continents.

After four failed bids in the recent past, Turkey is finally set to be awarded the hosting rights for a major international football tournament this week when UEFA decides where Euro 2032 will be staged. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has long dreamt of hosting one of the world's most prestigious sporting events.

Now he is set to finally get the chance, despite the country being mired in an economic crisis with the annual inflation rate hovering near 60 percent.

On Tuesday, UEFA's executive committee meets to announce the hosts for the 2028 and 2032 European Championships.

Turkey withdrew its bid to host in 2028 in order to focus all its effort on a united proposal with Italy to stage the tournament four years later.

That bid has no rivals.

Erdogan is not feigning an interest in what is Turkey's most popular sport -- in his younger years he played at semi-professional level and he is an avowed supporter of Fenerbahce, the Istanbul giants who are one of the country's biggest clubs.

Winning the right to host the biggest sporting event in Europe would be one of the crowning moments of his time in power.

It would also be highly symbolic in political terms.

"In modern times, sport has always been perceived as a means for Turkey to forge its own legitimacy and compete equally with the rest of the western world," says Daghan Irak, a lecturer in media communication at the University of Huddersfield in England.

"Erdogan has not diverted from that historic strategy."

Erdogan became prime minister at the end of 2002, at the same time Turkey's joint bid with Greece -- during a period of improving relations between the two countries -- to host Euro 2008 failed.

UEFA awarded that tournament to Austria and Switzerland.

Turkey then went out on its own in a bid to host Euro 2012, only to miss out to a joint Ukraine-Poland candidacy, while in 2016 it lost out to France.

<h2>- Human rights concerns -</h2>

They then missed out to Germany for Euro 2024, with UEFA's evaluation of the bid highlighting concerns about the country's "lack of an action plan in the area of human rights".

After four failed attempts, and having joined forces with Italy, the lack of any rival contenders means Turkey is now sure to get its chance.

That is despite human rights concerns still lingering following Erdogan's re-election as President in May -- he has not shown any clemency towards, or announced an amnesty for, tens of thousands of political opponents who have been imprisoned.

Turkey's Court of Cassation recently upheld a sentence of life imprisonment for Osman Kavala, a benefactor and philanthropist accused of financing anti-government protests in 2013.

Kavala will serve his sentence in isolation and has no possibility of early release.

"Unfortunately, these actions continue to undermine Turkey's prospects of joining the EU," said Nacho Sanchez Amor, the European Parliament's rapporteur on Turkey.

Previous Turkish bids have also fallen down due to questions about stadiums in the country.

However, that is no longer a problem according to Bagis Erten, a contributor to Socrates magazine who teaches sports communication at Kadir Has University in Istanbul.

"If the AKP (the ruling party since 2002) know how to do one thing, it is build," he says.

"They love that! We really have a lot of good stadiums now."

Erten cites examples in medium-sized cities like Trabzon, on the Black Sea, Konya and Eskisehir in Central Anatolia, and Izmir, the country's third-largest city, situated on the Aegean Sea coast.

"Our stadiums are now better prepared than in a lot of other countries," he adds. He believes Turkey could not bid to host a global event like the Olympics, "but it is absolutely in a position to host the Euro, in economic and security terms as well as for it's footballing culture and the crowds that go to matches".

In June it hosted the UEFA Champions League final, when Manchester City beat Inter Milan at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul.

"Turkey is ready now," Erten insists.

And in terms of integration into Europe, Irak adds, "it is much easier for Erdogan's Turkey to organise an international football tournament than to respect the verdicts of the European Court of Human Rights".

After four failed attempts Turkey set to realise long-term goal with bid to host Euro 2032

UEFA confirmed on Wednesday its receipt of a request by Italy and Turkey to merge their individual bids into one to host the 2032 European Championship, leaving Britain and Ireland as the sole bidder for the 2028 tournament.

"The award of both tournaments still requires the approval of the Executive Committee at its meeting in Nyon on 10 October," European soccer's governing body said in a statement.

Football: UEFA confirms Britain as sole bidder for EURO 2028; Turkey, Italy to bid for 2032 edition

Turkey is the only rival to the UK and Ireland candidacy to host the 2028 European Championship, UEFA announced on Wednesday after receiving final bids from interested countries.

European football's governing body said that Turkey would go up against the joint bid from England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland to host Euro 2028 and that Turkey is also a candidate to host Euro 2032.

Italy is the only other bidder for the hosting rights to the 2032 tournament.

"In the forthcoming months, the UEFA administration will evaluate each of the bids, with the UEFA Executive Committee to vote on who has won the right to host both editions in October," the body said in a statement.

The British and Irish joint bid for Euro 2028 is the favourite after the countries abandoned plans to run for the 2030 World Cup.

Wembley, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Newcastle's St James' Park, Birmingham's Villa Park and Everton's new stadium in Liverpool would host matches in England, as would Manchester City's Etihad Stadium.

The Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Hampden Park in Glasgow, Dublin's Lansdowne Road and Casement Park in Belfast are the other venues being proposed in the bid.

The English, Scottish, Welsh, Northern Irish and Irish football associations said in a joint statement: "High-capacity, world-famous football grounds and state-of-the-art new venues will provide the platform for the biggest and most commercially successful UEFA EURO ever –- making us a low risk, high reward host."

The bid carries the slogan "Football for all, football for good, football for the future", and says more than 80 percent of ticket-holders would be able to travel to matches by public transport.

It also predicts benefits of up to £2.6 billion ($3.25 billion) for the nations involved.

England and Scotland hosted 12 games during Euro 2020, which took place across Europe in 2021 after a delay caused by the pandemic.

Turkey is hoping for success this time after losing out to Germany in the bidding to host Euro 2024.

Istanbul's Ataturk Olympic Stadium will host this year's Champions League final on June 10.

Italy, the reigning European champions, have hosted the Euro twice before, in 1968 and 1980.

Rome's Stadio Olimpico was also used as a venue at Euro 2020.

The 2028 and 2032 tournaments will feature 24 teams.

Russia had initially declared an interest last year in hosting one of the two tournaments but UEFA announced last May that it would not consider any bid from the Russian Football Union.

That was after Russian clubs and national teams were suspended from all UEFA competitions due to the war in Ukraine.

European football's governing body said that Turkey would go up against the joint bid from England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland to host Euro 2028 and that Turkey is also a candidate to host Euro 2032. Italy is the only other bidder for the hosting rights to the 2032 tournament. "In the forthcoming months, the UEFA administration will evaluate each of the bids, with the UEFA Executive Committee to vote on who has won the right to host both editions in October," the body said in a statement. The British and Irish joint bid for Euro 2028 is the favourite after the countries abandoned plans to run for the 2030 World Cup. Wembley, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Newcastle's St James' Park, Birmingham's Villa Park and Everton's new stadium in Liverpool would host matches in England, as would Manchester City's Etihad Stadium. The Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Hampden Park in Glasgow, Dublin's Lansdowne Road and Casement Park in Belfast are the other venues being proposed in the bid. The English, Scottish, Welsh, Northern Irish and Irish football associations said in a joint statement: "High-capacity, world-famous football grounds and state-of-the-art new venues will provide the platform for the biggest and most commercially successful UEFA EURO ever –- making us a low risk, high reward host." The bid carries the slogan "Football for all, football for good, football for the future", and says more than 80 percent of ticket-holders would be able to travel to matches by public transport. It also predicts benefits of up to £2.6 billion ($3.25 billion) for the nations involved.
