A joint statement released on Saturday, said, “The parties have agreed to facilitate unhindered humanitarian access to all in need of assistance in Tigray and neighbouring regions.”

This agreement was signed by the chief of staff of Ethiopia’s armed forces’, Berhanu Jula and the commander-in-chief of Tigray rebels, General Tadesse Worede in the presence of African Union mediator and former Nigerian president, Olusegun Obasanjo.&nbsp;

The African Union mediator also said that Saturday’s agreement will take place with “immediate effect”. Additionally, they&nbsp;have also decided upon creating a joint committee which will implement the disarmament of fighters with the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). &nbsp;

“We have suffered untold misery over the last two years and still continue to suffer,” said Tadesse and after this commitment, he hopes that the suffering will soon come to an end. Meanwhile, Berhanu pledged the Ethiopian government’s “full commitment” to bringing about peace and stability to its people and the country.&nbsp;

Ethiopia's&nbsp;Tigray&nbsp;rebels&nbsp;said Sunday they were&nbsp;ready&nbsp;for a ceasefire and would accept a&nbsp;peace&nbsp;process led by the African Union, removing an obstacle to negotiations with the government to end almost two years of brutal warfare.

The announcement was made amid a flurry of international diplomacy after fighting flared last month for the first time in several months in northern&nbsp;Ethiopia, torpedoing a humanitarian truce.

"The government of&nbsp;Tigray&nbsp;is prepared to participate in a robust&nbsp;peace&nbsp;process under the auspices of the African Union," said a statement by the Tigrayan authorities.

"Furthermore, we are&nbsp;ready&nbsp;to abide by an immediate and mutually agreed cessation of hostilities in order to create a conducive atmosphere."

The Ethiopian government has previously said it was&nbsp;ready&nbsp;for unconditional&nbsp;talks&nbsp;"anytime, anywhere," brokered by the Addis Ababa-headquartered AU.

The&nbsp;Tigray&nbsp;People's Liberation Front (TPLF) had until now vehemently opposed the role of the AU's Horn of Africa envoy Olusegun Obasanjo, protesting his "proximity" to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

AU Commission chief Moussa Faki Mahamat issued a statement welcoming the development as a "unique opportunity towards the restoration of&nbsp;peace" and urged "both parties to urgently work towards an immediate ceasefire, engage in direct&nbsp;talks".

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called in a statement for "the parties to seize this opportunity for&nbsp;peace&nbsp;and to take steps to end the violence definitively and opt for dialogue."&nbsp;

He said the United Nations is&nbsp;ready&nbsp;to support the&nbsp;AU-led&nbsp;peace&nbsp;process.

Taye Dendea,&nbsp;Ethiopia's state minister for&nbsp;peace, described the TPLF announcement as a "nice development" on Twitter but insisted the "so-called TDF (Tigray&nbsp;Defence Forces) must be disarmed before&nbsp;peace&nbsp;talks&nbsp;start. Clear stand!"

The TPLF statement, which coincided with&nbsp;Ethiopia's new year, made no mention of preconditions, although it said the Tigrayans expected a "credible"&nbsp;peace&nbsp;process with "mutually acceptable" mediators as well as international observers.

TPLF leader Debretsion Gebremichael earlier this month proposed a conditional truce calling for "unfettered humanitarian access" and the restoration of essential services in&nbsp;Tigray, which is suffering food shortages and a lack of electricity, communications and banking.

In a letter to Guterres, he also called for the withdrawal of Eritrean forces from across&nbsp;Ethiopia, and for troops to pull out of western&nbsp;Tigray, a disputed region claimed by both Tigrayans and Amharas, the country's second-largest ethnic group.

Sunday's statement said a negotiating team including TPLF spokesman Getachew Reda and General Tsadkan Gebretensae, a former Ethiopian army chief now in&nbsp;Tigray's central military command, was "ready&nbsp;to be deployed without delay".

Debretsion had disclosed last month that two rounds of confidential face-to-face meetings had taken place between top civilian and military officials, the first acknowledgment by either warring side of direct contacts.

The AU's Faki had held&nbsp;talks&nbsp;Saturday with both Obasanjo, the former Nigerian president, and visiting US envoy for the Horn of Africa, Mike Hammer.

The Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) is a banned splinter group of the Oromo Liberation Front, a formerly banned opposition organisation that returned from exile after Abiy gained government in 2018. Last year, the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), which has been fighting the federal government in Ethiopia's northern region, made an alliance with the group. There was no indication that the TPLF was involved in the attack in Gimbi on Saturday.

A new government offensive has forced the OLA to evacuate from some places where it had previously exerted significant influence in recent months. The massacre comes after the group launched a series of counterattacks last week.

OCHA spokesperson Jens Laerke told reporters in Geneva that aid groups operating in Tigray had told the agency that if there is no change in conditions, "they will be unable to provide anything by the end of February".

"Families are exhausting all means to feed themselves, with three quarters of the population using extreme coping strategies to survive," WFP said in a statement.

"Diets are increasingly impoverished as food items become unavailable and families rely almost exclusively on cereals while limiting portion sizes and the number of meals they eat each day to make whatever food is available stretch further," it added.

WFP also sounded the alarm about rising hunger in neighbouring Amhara and Afar regions, which have been hit hard by fighting in recent months.&nbsp;

"WFP is doing all it can to ensure our convoys with food and medicines make it through the frontlines," said WFP's East Africa director, Michael Dunford.&nbsp;

"But if hostilities persist, we need all the parties to the conflict to agree to a humanitarian pause and formally agreed transport corridors, so that supplies can reach the millions besieged by hunger," Dunford said.

"Diets are increasingly impoverished as food items become unavailable and families rely almost exclusively on cereals while limiting portion sizes and the number of meals they eat each day to make whatever food is available stretch further," it added. WFP also sounded the alarm about rising hunger in neighbouring Amhara and Afar regions, which have been hit hard by fighting in recent months. "WFP is doing all it can to ensure our convoys with food and medicines make it through the frontlines," said WFP's East Africa director, Michael Dunford. "But if hostilities persist, we need all the parties to the conflict to agree to a humanitarian pause and formally agreed transport corridors, so that supplies can reach the millions besieged by hunger," Dunford said.
