India can attain energy independence by 2047, when it would celebrate 100 years of independence, according to a study by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory of the US Department of Energy.&nbsp;

The "Pathways to Atmanirbhar Bharat [self-reliant India]" study additionally finds that India's energy infrastructure will require $3 trillion in investments over the next several decades, reported PTI news agency.&nbsp;

It concluded that achieving energy independence would have significant positive effects on India's economy, environment, and use of energy, such as savings to consumers of USD 2.5 trillion through 2047, a 90 per cent reduction in the country's yearly spending on fossil fuel imports, or USD 240 billion. This is an increase in India's industrial competitiveness on a global scale, and the capacity to fulfill its net-zero commitment sooner than anticipated.

"India's energy infrastructure requires a USD3 trillion investment in the coming decades, and our study finds that prioritizing new energy assets that are cost-effective and clean is crucial for long-term financial sustainability," said Berkeley Lab staff scientist and co-author Amol Phadke in a statement issued by the Department of Energy and quoted by PTI.&nbsp;

According to the report, India would achieve energy independence by adding more than 500 GW of non-fossil electricity generation capacity by 2030, a target that the government has already set, followed by an 80 per cent clean grid by 2040 and a 90 per cent clean grid by 2047.&nbsp;

By 2035, it is predicted that sales of new vehicles might be nearly completely electric. According to the report, renewable hydrogen and electrification might replace heavy industrial output in most cases.&nbsp;

It claimed that the majority of the lithium required for the production of new electric vehicles and grid-scale battery storage systems (estimated at 2 million tonnes by 2040) could be supplied locally using recently discovered deposits.

"We find that India will embark on an ambitious energy transition in the coming decades," said Priyanka Mohanty, a co-author and researcher at Berkeley Lab. "However, the transition runway provides time to strategically deploy clean technologies at scale and plan for a just transition."

The Indian industry must also make the transition to clean technology, such the production of green steel and electric vehicles. India is one of the world's top exporters of steel and automobiles, and the EU nations who have made a commitment to carbon neutrality and a potential carbon border adjustment price are their biggest customers, according to the report.

Wholesale prices for natural gas are at their highest in years, and have more than doubled since the spring. The main causes are a resurgence of global demand, especially in Asia, and worries that European countries are not putting enough fuel in storage to prepare for winter.

UKSteel, an industry group, said Wednesday that its members were facing "extortionate" electric power prices and said that some steel-makers were being forced to shut down during periods of extremely high rates.

On Wednesday, a fire that shut down a cable bringing electricity from France led to a further surge in electric power prices. Kent Fire and Rescue, which used as many as 12 fire engines to fight the blaze, said Thursday that firefighters had finished their work at the scene, and that cause of the fire had not been determined.

National Grid, Britain’s main electricity supplier, said the part of the cable damaged by the fire would be out of service until March. Another part of the cable was offline because of planned outage, and will be back online September 27. Together, the cable can provide enough electricity to power two million homes.

The study intended to find out energy inequality among the income classes across 86 countries, from highly industrialised to developing.&nbsp;

The researchers combined data from the European Union and World Bank to assess the distribution of energy footprints, along with what energy-intensive goods and services different income groups tend to spend their money on. &nbsp;

The results, published in <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41560-020-0579-8">Nature Energ</a>y&nbsp;show that energy footprints increase with expenditure, and, as a consequence, are unequally distributed.

The study also said that the top 10 per cent in the income group consume nearly 20 times more energy than the bottom 10 per cent.&nbsp;

As income grows, expenditure on energy-intensive goods, including package holidays or cars, rises, leading to high energy inequality.&nbsp;

Amongst the services, transport showed some of the greatest inequality, with the richest 10 per cent&nbsp;consuming more than half of the energy-related to mobility, which is majorly dependant on fossil fuels.&nbsp;

The top 10 per cent also use vehicle fuel energy 187 times more than the bottom 10 per cent.&nbsp;

The researchers also suggested measures to control energy inequality in the transport sector.&nbsp;

“Transport-related consumption categories are among the least equal. Without reducing the energy demand of these services, either through frequent-flyer levies, promoting public transport and limiting private vehicle use, or alternative technology such as electric vehicles," said Lead author Yannick Oswald, PhD researcher in the School of Earth and Environment at Leeds. &nbsp;

The research also highlighted a huge difference in energy distribution among the rich and poor countries. It shows that 20 per cent of the UK population, Germany's 40 per cent and 100 per cent constitute five per cent of the top energy consumers. This is in sharp contrast with China and India as only 2 and o.02 per cent respectively are in the top five per cent energy distribution list. &nbsp;&nbsp;
