Sri Lanka has recorded the highest number of elephant deaths in the world due to the human-elephant conflict, according to a media report. The country’s Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) had ordered a special audit into the human-elephant conflict by renowned elephant expert Dr Prithviraj Fernando, the head of the Centre for Conservation and Research.

At least three wild elephants have been killed by a moving train in the Northeastern Sri Lanka, a railway official said on Sunday. The incident happened when a herd of 13 elephants was crossing a rail track between the forest reserves of Thrikonamadu and Madura Oya in the Welioya area.
