This week's data brought excellent news for the US Federal Reserve on two fronts, with consumer prices rising more slowly than expected in April and retail expenditure holding flat. However, authorities have yet to announce a clear shift in the timetable of the rate cuts, which investors anticipate will begin this year.

Several Federal Reserve officials, including the vice chair of the rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), New York Fed President John Williams, praised the promising data. Despite positive data from US government agencies, there is still a cautious tone about future monetary policy.

"I don't see any indicators now telling me...there's a reason to change the stance of monetary policy now," Williams stated to Reuters. He said that he did not anticipate the criteria for a rate drop occurring "in the very near term."

Richmond Fed President Thomas Barkin reaffirmed this assessment on CNBC, stating that while April retail sales statistics indicated a "good" pace of spending, it was not "great." He emphasised that, despite declining consumer demand, the service industry will continue to raise prices. "I do believe we're on the right track. I believe inflation is falling," Barkin said, although he added that meeting the 2 per cent inflation target on a long-term basis would take longer.

Loretta Mester, president of the Cleveland Fed, offered cautious optimism, calling this year's inflation progress "disappointing." She warned that increased public expectations for near-term inflation may compel additional rate hikes if long-term expectations rise as well. "Holding the policy rate at the 5.25 per cent to 5.5 per cent range where it has been since July is prudent...as we gain clarity about the path of inflation," said Mester.

Similarly, Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee cited slowing shelter inflation in April as a favourable indicator. Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic agreed during an appearance in Jacksonville, calling the reduction in shelter inflation "a pretty significant development." However, he stated that "one data point is not a trend."

The time frame for making a case for rate decreases before the Federal Reserve’s September 17-18 meeting is constrained. Before the June 11-12 meeting, policymakers will receive one extra report on the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index. By the July 30-31 meeting, they will have gotten comprehensive data on the economy's performance for the first half of the year, including inflation and job figures through June.

If inflationary pressures continue to fall, the Federal Reserve’s policy pronouncements may shift, perhaps clearing the way for rate decreases. The Federal Reserve's annual research conference in Jackson Hole in August could be a critical occasion for signalling any policy changes.

In terms of global policy, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) advocated caution. "The recent inflation data are overall higher than we would like to see," IMF spokesman Julie Kozack stated. "This reinforces the need for the Fed to be cautious."

As things stand, US Federal Reserve officials remain cautiously hopeful but are yet to commit to a rate-cutting plan, preferring to keep an eye on inflation and the economy.

The bad news does not seem to be ending for China. April data shows that the country's credit growth shrank for the first time, as government bond sales slowed. The 2024 Work Trend Index by Microsoft and LinkedIn solidifies the prevailing notion: Artificial Intelligence is not a fad, but a technology that is changing the way people work.

Three major trends emerge out of the report, born out of a survey involving 31,000 'knowledge workers' — employees working at a desk, either in an office or remotely — across 31 countries.

1) Employees are increasingly using AI at their workplace, with at least 75 per cent of the respondents claiming to use AI for work. In fact, AI usage has nearly doubled between September 2023 and March 2024. An overwhelming percentage of employees, especially in small and medium-sized businesses, are using their own AI tools to work. Nearly 80 per cent of employees believe that AI skills will broaden their job opportunities.

2) AI is increasingly becoming the top professional skill to possess. Sixty-six per cent of corporate leaders say they won't hire someone without AI skills. In fact, companies are more likely to hire a less experienced but AI-skilled candidate, than a more experienced candidate with no AI skills. In an indication of its rising stock in the corporate world, there was a 142-fold increase in AI skills like Copilot and ChatGPT being added to LinkedIn profiles last year.

3) AI is increasingly aiding employees' creativity and productivity. The report dubs frequent AI users as 'power users', who utilise the power of prompts to save more than 30 minutes in a day. They are the ones who experiment with the power of AI to enhance their user experience. At least 92 per cent of 'power users' say that AI boosts their creativity. Over 90 per cent of them also add that the technology helps them focus on the most important work and enjoy their job.

While AI use is proliferating at a personal level, corporate leaders are still figuring out a way to scale up. A big factor hindering AI's growth in workplaces is inertia. At least 60 per cent believe that their organisation lacks a plan and vision to implement AI for revenue generation.

"The pressure to show immediate Return of Investment (ROI) is making leaders inert, even in the face of AI inevitability," notes the report. Many employers are also worried about quantifying the productivity gains of AI, which is further delaying mass adoption.

The report urges the corporate world to shun its inhibitions and embrace AI. "As we reach the hard part of this tech disruption — turning experimentation into tangible business impact — companies that face the challenge head-on will surge ahead," concludes the report.

After enduring a challenging period marked by economic downturn, the United Kingdom has emerged from recession. According to the official data cited by UK media outlets, the country's economy saw a growth of 0.6 per cent between January and March. Reacting to this, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt said that the data is "proof that the economy is returning to full health for the first time since the pandemic".

“We’re growing this year and have the best outlook among European G7 countries over the next six years, with wages growing faster than inflation, energy prices falling and tax cuts worth £900 ($1,128) to the average worker hitting bank accounts," Hunt added.

According to data from the Office for National Statistics, the UK's economy experienced its most robust growth with an uptick from the previous quarter's contraction of 0.3 per cent in GDP. This positive momentum is seen as a timely boost for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak as he prepares for an election expected to be held in January next year. Sunak took to social media to express his optimism.
