The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has spotted stormy weather in the two brown dwarfs' sky as it made a weather report of such "failed stars".

The two&nbsp;brown dwarfs have formed a binary pair known as WISE 1049AB which was spotted by&nbsp;NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) in 2013. The two brown dwarfs are just 6.5&nbsp;light-years&nbsp;away from Earth.

These are the closest brown dwarfs to our&nbsp;sun and hence became the best target for powerful&nbsp;infrared instruments of the&nbsp;James Webb Space Telescope.

A brown dwarf is a celestial object which is big enough to ignite the&nbsp;nuclear fusion&nbsp;of hydrogen to helium and turn into a full-fledged&nbsp;star.&nbsp;

It is also considered big enough to become a planet. The brown dwarfs are believed to be a missing link between&nbsp;lowest mass stars&nbsp;M-dwarfs and gas giant planets&nbsp;like&nbsp;Jupiter.

Earlier, the atmosphere of various brown dwarfs has been investigated, however, due to time-averaged snapshots, the changes in the brown-dwarf atmosphere were not visible.

The brown dwarfs rotate very fast like WISE 1049A which spins on its axis once every 7 hours and the other one once every 5 hours.&nbsp;

The conditions in the atmospheres of the brown dwarfs can alter over time which meant that the scientists were missing a lot of variabilities in their observations.

However, the JWST has the ability to detect the changes over time.&nbsp;

<h2>How the brown dwarfs were observed?</h2>

A team headed by the University of Edinburgh's Beth Biller used JWST's Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) to observe WISE 1049AB for 8 hours and then spent another seven hours on it using its Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRSpec).

The researchers discovered that brown dwarfs have tumultuous clouds which are composed of silicate grains and are sweltering in temperatures between 875 degrees Celsius (1,610 degrees F) and 1,026 degrees Celsius (1880 degrees F).&nbsp;

This meant that hot sand was blowing in the winds on the brown dwarfs and it also had carbon monoxide, methane and water vapour in it.

"Our findings show that we are on the cusp of transforming our understanding of worlds far beyond our own," Biller said, in a&nbsp;statement.&nbsp;

"Insights such as these can help us understand the conditions not just on celestial objects like brown dwarfs, but also on giant exoplanets beyond our&nbsp;solar system. Eventually, the techniques we are refining here may enable the first detections of weather on&nbsp;habitable planets&nbsp;like our own, which orbit other stars," he said.

Astronomers are forced to question the theories surrounding the planet's formation after stumbling upon an exoplanet which shouldn't have technically existed.

The discovered planet, which has a mass similar to Neptune and is more than 13 times larger than&nbsp;Earth, was spotted orbiting an ultracool M-dwarf star named LHS 3154. Ironically, the star is nine times smaller than our Sun. An M-dwarf star is the coolest and smallest kind of star in the galaxy.

The planet, which has been named LHS 3154b, has been closely orbiting the star and it completes one orbit every 3.7 Earth days. This has emerged as one of the largest known planets present in a close orbit around one of the most low-mass, coldest stars in the universe, as per the new study published in the journal Science on Thursday (Nov 30).

The planet's discovery upends how the formation of planetary systems is understood by scientists. In a statement, study co-author Suvrath Mahadevan and professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Penn State Verne M. Willaman said, “This discovery really drives home the point of just how little we know about the universe. We wouldn’t expect a planet this heavy around such a low-mass star to exist.”

The stars are formed from massive clouds of dust and gas and a disk is created around them using the leftover material, where planets are later born. The amount of material located within the disks surrounding the stars determines the size of the planets to be formed. The disk material depends largely on the mass of the star.

Throughout the Milky Way galaxy, the small M dwarf stars are the most common. They generally have small and rocky planets which continue to orbit them, rather than giant gas planets.

“The planet-forming disk around the low-mass star LHS 3154 is not expected to have enough solid mass to make this planet. But it’s out there, so now we need to reexamine our understanding of how planets and stars form,” said Mahadevan.

<h2>Scientists look into habitable zones in search of life</h2>

The planet has been orbiting around the star nearly 51 light-years away from the sun and was spotted using the Habitable Zone Planet Finder (HPF), which was installed on the Hobby-Eberly Telescope by the scientists at the McDonald Observatory in Texas.

The HPF built by Mahadevan and his team was designed for spotting planets orbiting within the habitable zone of cool and small stars. The habitable zone refers to the right distance from a star from where a planet is in warm condition for supporting the presence of liquid water on its surface as well as life.

“Think about it like the star is a campfire. The more the fire cools down, the closer you’ll need to get to that fire to stay warm. The same is true for planets. If the star is colder, then a planet will need to be closer to that star if it is going to be warm enough to contain liquid water. If a planet has a close enough orbit to its ultracool star, we can detect it by seeing a very subtle change in the colour of the star’s spectra or light as it is tugged on by an orbiting planet,” said Mahadevan.

The dwarf star is more than 1,000 light-years away in the Cygnus constellation. It has been nicknamed Janus, inspired by the two-faced Roman god of transition. The star's formal scientific name is ZTF J203349.8+322901.1. 
 
Initially, it was discovered using the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), which is an instrument that scans the night skies from Caltech’s Palomar Observatory near San Diego.

Caiazzo was looking for white dwarfs and they spotted one candidate because of its rapidly changing brightness. The observatory's further observations revealed that Janus has been rotating on its axis every 15 minutes. 
 
Spectrometry measurements, which provide a star's chemical fingerprints, showed that hydrogen is entirely filled on one side of the object and the other side is filled entirely with helium. 
 
If seen from close, the two sides of the star will appear bluish in colour and have a similar brightness, however, the helium side is likely to have a grainy, patchwork appearance similar to that of our sun, while the star's hydrogen side appears smooth. 
 
It is difficult to explain the two-faced nature of the star as swirling gas makes up its exterior. “It’s hard for anything to be separated,” stated Caiazzo. The scientists feel that Janus can be undergoing a rare transition which has been predicted to occur because of white dwarf evolution.

“Not all but some white dwarfs transition from being hydrogen- to helium-dominated on their surface. We might have possibly caught one such white dwarf in the act,” Caiazzo said. In that case, the scientists feel that the transition must be occurring in a lopsided way because of an asymmetric magnetic field. 
 
“If the magnetic field is stronger on one side, it could be limiting convection (bubbling in the helium layer). “On the other side, convection could be winning out and so the hydrogen layer has been lost,” Caiazzo said.

The study published in the Nature journal shows that M-type red dwarf stars are not as stable as previously thought.

However, the sun appears to be far less active than similar stars in terms of brightness variations caused by sunspots and other phenomena.

Researchers said on Thursday that an examination of 369 stars similar to the sun in surface temperatures, size, and rotation period,&nbsp;it takes the sun about 24-1/2 days to rotate once on its axis,&nbsp;showed that they displayed on average five times more brightness variability than the sun.

“This variability is caused by dark spots on the surface of the star rotating in and out of view,” said astronomer Timo Reinhold of the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Germany.

The sun,&nbsp;essentially a hot ball of hydrogen and helium, is an average-sized star that formed more than 4.5 billion years ago and is roughly halfway through its lifespan. Its diameter is about 864,000 miles (1.4 million km). Its surface temperature is about 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit (5,500 degrees Celsius).

“Temperature and rotation period are thought to be the major ingredients for the dynamo inside the star, which generates its magnetic field, and eventually the number and size of the spots causing the brightness to vary. Finding such stars with very similar parameters as our sun but being five times more variable was surprising,” Reinhold said.

Elevated magnetic activity associated with sunspots can lead to solar flares, coronal mass ejections,&nbsp;large expulsions of plasma and magnetic field from the outermost part of the sun’s atmosphere,&nbsp;and other electromagnetic phenomena that can affect Earth, for example disrupting satellites and communications and endangering astronauts.

“A much more active sun might have also affected Earth on geological time scales,&nbsp;paleoclimatology. A ‘too active’ star would definitively change the conditions for life on the planet, so living with a quite boring star is not the worst option,” Reinhold said.

The researchers compared data on similar stars to historical records of the sun’s activity.

These records included about 400 years of observational data on sunspots and about 9,000 years of data based on chemical element variants in tree rings and ice cores caused by solar activity. They&nbsp;indicated the sun has not been much more active than it is now.

Scientists issue dire warning about Sun's instability after eruption of 'Dragon' star

Researchers have discovered a huge snowman-shaped star with a unique atmospheric composition.

The enormous white dwarf star is known as WDJ0551+4135 and is thought to have resulted from the merger of two so-called white dwarf stars that often explode as powerful supernovas.

The study including these findings published Monday in the journal Nature Astronomy.

White dwarf stars are essentially the dead remains of stars like our sun, once they've burned through all of their hydrogen fuel and outer layers.

Usually, they're small and lightweight but this star is 1.14 times the mass of our sun which is nearly twice the average mass of a white dwarf star.

"This star stood out as something we had never seen before," said Mark Hollands, lead study author and postdoctoral researcher at the University of Warwick's department of physics.

''Initially, these observations didn't make any sense. The only way you can explain it is if it was formed through a merger of two white dwarfs," he added.

Astronomers first spotted the star in data collected by the European Space Agency's Gaia space telescope, launched in 2013.

White dwarf stars are essentially the dead remains of stars like our sun, once they've burned through all of their hydrogen fuel and outer layers. "This star stood out as something we had never seen before," said Mark Hollands, lead study author and postdoctoral researcher at the University of Warwick's department of physics. ''Initially, these observations didn't make any sense. The only way you can explain it is if it was formed through a merger of two white dwarfs," he added. Astronomers first spotted the star in data collected by the European Space Agency's Gaia space telescope, launched in 2013.
