Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Tuesday trashed former Ludhiana Deputy Superintendent of Police's (DSP) charges against Cabinet Minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu, saying had someone like Balwinder Singh Sekhon made such allegations against a senior commander in the Army, he would have been court-martialled.

Reacting to former DSP's allegations against Ashu, which were raised by some Opposition members in the Punjab House a day earlier, the Chief Minister said in the state Assembly that the former was only trying to conduct a media trial with his baseless charges. "Unfortunately, this was not the Army and Sekhon could not be court-martialled," said Singh, asserting that if the departmental inquiry currently in progress against Sekhon finds him guilty, "he (the Chief Minister) would personally ensure the officer's dismissal under Article 311". Responding to Leader of Opposition Harpal Cheema, Singh later said Ashu had mentioned all these cases in his election affidavits. "Sekhon was thrown out of police force and even dismissed from duty on many serious charges but was reinstated later. Now, he is making charges against my minister," Singh said, questioning the former DSP's locus standi in making any statements or allegations against Ashu. A charge sheet, as specified in Clause (v) to (ix) of rule 5 of the Punjab Civil Services (Punishment and Appeal) Rules 1970, was served to the delinquent officer on February 19. "Further, as per record, five criminal cases were registered against Sekhon and he was dismissed under Article 311 in 2002 for indulging in corrupt practices and his connections with bad elements," the Chief Minister said.

Two Pakistani policemen were killed after unidentified assailants opened fire at them in Lower Dir district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The policemen were deployed on security detail for polio teams, Dawn reported.

Lower Dir Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Saeedur Rehman confirmed that the incident took place in Maidan area of the city. "The policemen were on their way to a basic health unit when they were targeted," he added.

No officials from the polio vaccination team were hurt as they were at a distance from the firing, Rehman said.

Forty-nine women, including a Russian national and her two children, were rescued in a raid on a rehabilitation centre here while its owner and three employees arrested for allegedly torturing the inmates, the police said on Sunday.

Following a complaint by a section of inmates, police raided the Kripa Ghar Rehab Centre in Bishnumati area of the Budhanilkantha Municipality on Saturday, said Homindra Bogti, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) at Teku-based Metropolitan Police Range.

It is alleged that the owner of the rehabilitation centre 'Kripa Ghar Rehab Centre' and her three employees had been meting out inhuman treatment to women, aged between 12 and 60 years, who needed proper medical care and psycho-social service.

The police raided the premises along with officials from the District Administration Office and a non-governmental organization 'Maiti Nepal' and rescued the victims.

Bogti said the 30-year-old owner, Shruti Gurung and three employees have been arrested and sent to five-day judicial custody by a Kathmandu court.

A Russian national and her two children were among the rescued women, the official said, adding that she had taken shelter there after her tourist visa expired.

A total of 25 women have been reunited with their families, while 24 others are in the custody of Maiti Nepal, the DSP said.&nbsp;
