The Indian soldiers deployed in the disputed area have pitched in tents, in an indication that they are unlikely to retreat unless there was reciprocity from&nbsp;China&#39;s PLA personnel in ending the face-off at an altitude of around 10,000 feet in the Sikkim section.

A steady line of supplies is being maintained for the soldiers at the site, official sources said, signalling that Indian Army is not going to wilt under any&nbsp;pressure from China.

At the same time they sounded confident of finding a diplomatic solution to the dispute, citing resolution of border skirmishes in the past through&nbsp;diplomacy.

Though China has been aggressively asserting that it was not ready for any &quot;compromise&quot; and that the &quot;ball is in India&#39;s court&quot;, the view in the security&nbsp;establishment here is that there cannot be any unilateral approach in defusing the tension.

Both the countries had agreed to a mechanism in 2012 to resolve border flare-ups through consultations at various levels.

The mechanism has not worked so far in the current case as the standoff near the Bhutan tri-junction, triggered by China&#39;s attempt to build a road in the&nbsp;strategically important area, has dragged on for over three weeks.

New Delhi has already conveyed to China that such an action would represent a significant change of status quo with &quot;serious&quot; security implications for&nbsp;India.

The road link could give China a major military advantage over India.

Doka La is the Indian name for the region which Bhutan recognises as Doka La, while China claims it as part of its Donglang region.

China and Bhutan are engaged in talks over the resolution of the dispute in the area. India argues that since it is a tri-junction involving the three&nbsp;countries, it also has a say in the issue, especially in the backdrop of 2012 agreement between special representatives of the two countries, that have till&nbsp;now held 19 rounds of talks.

Bhutan has no diplomatic ties with China. As a close friend and neighbour, Bhutan enjoys diplomatic and military support from India.

Of the 3,488-km-long India-China border from Jammu and Kashmir to Arunachal Pradesh, a 220-km section falls in Sikkim.

The Malabar Naval Exercise being conducted by India, Japan and the United States is a &quot;strategic message&quot; to China, a top US official said on Monday.

&quot;I would like to say this is a strategic message to China. It (the message) would also be the same to Canada or to the Republic of Korea or to Australia or to any other maritime force,&quot; US Navy Commander, Rear Admiral William D Byrne Jr told the press after the inauguration of the five-day Malabar Naval Exercise, here.

&quot;Operating together and practising together is a good thing. It is because -- we are better together and we learn from each other. We know who we are and what is our capability. That is the strategic message to the entire world. I think, we are setting a great example here in Malabar (exercise) 2017&quot;, he added.

Asked whether the exercise had anything to do with the situation prevailing around North Korea, the US Commander said, &quot;There are certainly global threats. Malabar is not focused on any specified threat. It is directed towards three countries India, Japan and United States. It is not directed towards any specific country or threat.&quot;&nbsp;

A top official of the Indian Navy, however, clarified that the naval drill had nothing to do with the the stand-off between India and China in Doklam near Sikkim.

&quot;The Process of Malabar exercise starts a year before ( its scheduled beginning) and the initial planning takes place six months in advance. The stand-off you are talking about has got nothing to do with the Malabar exercise,&quot; Indian Flag Officer, Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command, HCS Bisht said.

India and the US had kicked off the Malabar exercise back in 1994, this is the 21st edition of the drills.&nbsp;

&ldquo;Indian, Japanese and US maritime forces have a common understanding and knowledge of a shared working environment at sea. Each iteration of this exercise helps to advance the level of understanding between our sailors, and we hope to be able to continue this process over time,&rdquo; the US navy statement said.

The naval exercise was spearheaded by India&#39;s aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, Japan&#39;s largest warship JS Izumo, and US carrier Nimitz.

America&#39;s guided-missile cruiser USS Princeton, guided-missile destroyers USS Howard and USS Shoup and USS Kidd will be part of the drill, the US has informed.

According to media reports, Indian Navy&#39;s two Shivalik class multi-role frigates, a Kora class missile frigate, two destroyers, P8I maritime surveillance aircraft, anti-submarine warfare corvettes, tanker INS Jyoti and the nuclear submarine will also be part of the exercise. Japan is sending its destroyer JS Sazanami for the Malabar exercise.

US says Malabar exercise 'strategic message' to China

Bhutan has protested to China constructing a road in the disputed territory of Doklam, even as the stand-off between Beijing and the Indian government continued on Thursday.

The Himalayan kingdom said the construction of a road inside Bhutanese territory was a &quot;direct violation of agreements and affects the process of demarcating the boundary between our two countries.&quot;

&nbsp;&quot;Bhutan hopes that the status quo in the Doklam area will be maintained as before June 16, 2017.&quot;

India&#39;s army chief, General Bipin Rawat, travelled to Sikkim on Thursday, just days after Beijing accused Indian border guards of crossing into its territory to stop the construction of the road.

China&#39;s military rejected Bhutan&#39;s allegation that soldiers of the People&#39;s Liberation Army (PLA) had violated its territory. A chinese defence ministry spokesman said the troops operated on &quot;Chinese territory&quot; and also asked India to &quot;correct&quot; its &quot;wrong doing&quot;.

&quot;I have to correct when you say Chinese personnel entered Bhutan&#39;s territory. Chinese troops operated on Chinese territory,&quot; a Chinese defence ministry spokesman told the press.&#39;

The People&#39;s Liberation Army spokesman also accused Indian troops of entering the Chinese side in Sikkim sector&#39;s Donglong (Doklam).

&quot;They tried to stop the normal activities. The Chinese carried out appropriate responses to these activities to safeguard sovereignty and territorial integrity,&quot; the spokesman said.

&quot;We have made it clear to the Indian side to correct their wrong doing and withdraw all personnel from Chinese territory,&quot; he said.

Bhutan yesterday said it had issued a demarche to China over the construction of a road towards its Army camp in Doklam&#39;s Zomplri area and asked Beijing to restore status quo by stopping the work 
immediately.

&quot;We have issued a demarche to China through its diplomatic mission here. Recently, the Chinese army (People&#39;s Liberation Army) started construction of a road towards Bhutanese Army camp at Zomphlri in Doklam area which is in violation of an agreement between the two countries,&quot; Ambassador of Bhutan to India Vetsop Namgyel had said in New Delhi.

The Donglong, a tri-junction area near the Chumbi Valley, is considered a disputed area between China and Bhutan. It is located at the strategically important narrow tri-junction of India, China and Bhutan.

The PLA is constructing a road from the strategically located Chumbi Valley to Dolam, close to the Sikkim border.

On Wednesday, China justified construction of the road in the Sikkim sector as &quot;legitimate&quot;, alleging that India had no right to interfere since the road was being built in Donglang, calling it an &quot;indisputable&quot; part of Chinese territory.&nbsp;

China claimed India was objecting to its efforts to build the road on behalf of Bhutan and that neither of the two countries had the right to interfere.

China also bulldozed an old bunker of the Indian Army located at the tri-junction of India, China and Bhutan in Sikkim after India refused to accede to its request, official sources said.

Top government sources told Zee Media that trouble between the two sides started on May 18-19 when a Chinese patrol came to the Doka La area and objected to the two bunkers built by the Indian Army there. When Indian troops stood their ground, the Chinese soldiers increased their troops from a dozen to 150-200.

The two bunkers built there were not manned and could have acted as a good observation point for the troops there.The Chinese troops brought one of it down and had even got their dumpers and bull dozers to carry out the task on June 8.

Indian troops also reached the point and objected to the Chinese action there and stood ground against the Chinese behaviour. As the arguments and counter arguments on the issue started growing, the Chinese started increasing their number from a few dozen soldiers initially to 150-200 soldiers till yesterday, the sources said.

The Chinese are also making an attempt to shift down the tri-junction point in the Chumbi valley by almost another 12 kilometres to get a bigger hold on the area and get wider depth in case of a military deployment.

The Chinese are now building a road which they want to extend further to a place called that will bring them to the closest possible of the Chicken&rsquo;s Neck.

&quot;The Chinese troops have even been patrolling areas up to a place called Gemochin where the Royal Bhutanese Army has its posts and PLA troops marched to their positions and reportedly even confronted them for being in their territory,&quot;&nbsp;the sources said.

From the Chinese Army&#39;s point of view,&nbsp;the Chumbi valley has to be widened as they want to move closer to the strategically important Chicken&#39;s Neck corridor in Siliguri which is under the watch of the Army&#39;s 33 Corps headquarters situated in Sukna in West Bengal.

The Chicken&rsquo;s Neck corridor in a land mass connecting mainland India with the northeast and is heavily guarded by India with one full Corps (90,000 troops) of the Army deployed in and around that area to protect it.

Government sources said the India is firm on resolving the issue as per the satisfaction of the parties involved in the disputed land boundary issue in the area.

Indian Army chief General Bipin Rawat also reached Sikkim today to take stock of the ongoing situation with the local formation commanders as his troops have stood ground in the area.

Meanwhile,&nbsp;China has accused Indian troops of &quot;crossing the boundary&quot; in the Sikkim section and demanded their immediate withdrawal, while asserting that it has shut down the Nathu La pass entry for Indian pilgrims travelling to Kailash Mansarovar because of the border standoff.

Sources said Bhutan and India have been anticipating such an attempt by the Chinese in this area based on their construction activities and had discussed the scenario in detail a couple of months before the situation came up.&nbsp;
