This indicated the product contained insulin instead of Ozempic's active ingredient semaglutide, the BASG added. The regulator did not mention how many people were hospitalised.

<h2>'Fake injection pens might still be in circulation'</h2>

An investigation has been launched with the criminal investigation service warning that fake injection pens might still be in circulation. Last week, the European Medicines Agency warned about the existence of such pens falsely labelled as Ozempic.

Novo Nordisk, which manufactures the drug, flagged a surge in online offers of counterfeit Ozempic as well as its weight-loss drug Wegovy, both based on semaglutide. Reuters reported on Tuesday that Novo Nordisk has been scrambling to boost output to catch up with overwhelming demand.&nbsp;

"It appears that this shortage is being exploited by criminal organisations to bring counterfeits of Ozempic to market," BASG further said.&nbsp;

<h2>What does Ozempic do?</h2>

According to Novo Nordisk's website, Ozempic is used to improve blood sugar (glucose) in adults with type 2 diabetes. The drug also reduces the risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attack, stroke, or death in adults with type 2 diabetes with known heart disease.

However, Ozempic is not for use in people with type 1 diabetes. It is also not yet known if the drug is safe and effective for use in children under 18 years of age. Some of the serious side effects of the drug include inflammation of the pancreas, changes in vision and low blood sugar.

Reuters reported on Tuesday that EMA authorities in Germany and Britain have been investigating a case where bogus injection pens with German labels in genuine Ozempic packaging were sold from a wholesaler in Austria to Germany, and from there, on to two British wholesalers.

The experts have hailed the drug as a game-changer. In a 72-week trial, participants lost around 20% of their body weight. The report has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine. In the research, the team of international researchers said that they had split 2,539 overweight or obese participants into four groups.&nbsp;One group was given a placebo injection once a week for 72 weeks, while the other three were provided either 5mg, 10mg or 15mg of a new drug called tirzepatide. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Every participant was asked to take low-calorie meals and ensure around 150 minutes of physical activity a week. On average, the participants had a body weight of 104.8kg and 94.5% were obese. The majority of the people were white and female. No one had diabetes. &nbsp;

After the end of the 72-week period, participants who were given 5mg of tirzepatide every week lost an average of 16.1kg, people given 10mg shed an average weight of 22.2kg and the group who had taken the 15mg lost an average weight of 23.6kg. The group which was given a placebo injection lost an average weight of 2.4kg. &nbsp;

The Farxiga data did not achieve statistical significance in cutting the risk of the disease worsening and death in such patients, the Anglo-Swedish drugmaker said.

AstraZeneca has had a rollercoaster ride with its coronavirus vaccine, as nations restricted its use after European and British regulators confirmed possible links to rare blood clots.

However, the company has also been working on developing new treatments and repurposing existing drugs to prevent and treat coronavirus infections.

In the Farxiga study, the drug was given over 30 days in a global trial of 1,250 patients hospitalised with COVID-19, in addition to the local standard of care, AstraZeneca said.

Patients in the trial also had a medical history of hypertension, cardiovascular disease and heart failure, type-2 diabetes or chronic kidney disease.

The trial did not achieve statistical significance for the main goals of prevention and recovery at 30 days but AstraZeneca said the safety and tolerability profile was consistent with the medicine’s established safety profile.

One of the company’s other treatments is an antibody cocktail called AZD7442, designed to treat the disease rather than prevent it as the vaccine aims to do.

The treatment, which is in late-stage trials, is one of several being developed for COVID-19, including efforts by rivals Moderna Inc and Eli Lilly.

In March, AstraZeneca said it would supply up to half a million extra doses of the antibody cocktail to the United States, building on an October 2020 contract for initial supplies of 200,000 doses, for a value of $726 million.

Shares were flat in early trading.
