Those floods refilled a nearby lake that had been drained in 1962 in a bid to fight malaria, swelling it to three times its normal size.

"After the storms, Daniel and Elias last autumn, around 20,000 hectares (50,000 acres) of plains in Thessaly were flooded, and various freshwater fish were carried by rivers" to the sea, Dimitris Klaudatos, a professor of agriculture and environment at the University of Thessaly had said.

Since then the lake waters have receded drastically, forcing the freshwater fish toward the Volos port that empties into the Pagasetic Gulf and the Aegean Sea, where they cannot survive.

On Tuesday alone, authorities had removed 57 tons of the dead fish washed up on beaches near Volos.

According to experts, the historic floods in the Thessaly plane farther north last year was the cause behind this incident. The flood water refilled a lake drained in 1962 to prevent the spread of malaria, causing it to swell by three times more than its normal state.

The water in the lake receded and pushed the fish to the Volos port that drains into the salt water of Pagasetic Gulf and the Aegean Sea. The river flowing to Volos did not have any net placed at its mouth to stop the fish from going into saltwater of the sea, which likely killed them, said the experts.

“They didn’t do the obvious, to put a protective net,” Mayor Beos said, blaming the government authorities.

Cleaning has been happening for two years, we have no idea how this has happened. If they died due to machines used to de-weeding, they should stop the machines and if it's any chemical, then they should answer how these fishes have died. It's a problem for everyone, especially the tourists, as the Dal Lake is stinking,'' said Abdul Rashid, a local.&nbsp;

However, the experts blame the growing pollution for the death of the fish. The water quality of Dal Lake has deteriorated over the last many years. The authorities have been cleaning the lake continuously, but the water quality has not improved yet. Experts say it will take a few more years to clean up the full lake.&nbsp;

''We call this phenomenon fish kill. Wherever there is a stagnant water body, lakes or wetlands, due to pollution load or organic load, there is a natural phenomenon that there will be oxygen depletion due to which fish can die. When the oxygen concentration falls, the fish will die. There are many reasons, it's a polluted water body, and this generally does not happen in clean water bodies. It is always found in those water bodies which have pollution. Dal has a lot of organic waste and a lot of weeds; decomposition increases in summer. Pollution is the main cause,'' said Dr Feroz Ahmad Bhat, Dean, Faculty of Fisheries at SKUAST-K.&nbsp;

The authorities looking after Dal Lake say that this mass death of fish happened due to thermal stratification — a change in the temperature at different depths in the lake. They are saying it is a normal phenomenon and people should not panic.&nbsp;

''We have done the preliminary analysis and found that it's the thermal stratification which has caused it. The lake has a temperature gradient, the lower layers of the lake sometimes have less oxygen due to which this phenomenon happens. There is no need to panic. It's an annual affair. It happened last year and a few years ago it happened on a massive scale in Nigeen Lake. No big fish has been affected. We have taken the samples and we are doing a detailed investigation to know the exact reason, but there is no need to panic. It also happens due to the temperature variation,'' said Bashir Ahmad Bhat, VC, Lakes and Conservation Management Authority (LCMA).

The authorities are now waiting for the final results to come to know the exact cause of the death of the fish in the lake.&nbsp;

According to the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries, the deaths were probably brought on by low oxygen levels when floodwaters receded. This&nbsp;was made worse because fish needs extra oxygen in the warmer weather. People in the town of Menindee complained of awful smell that the dead fish gave out.&nbsp;

This is&nbsp;the third mass kill in the region in the recent past, the New South Wales government said on Friday. It added&nbsp;that "millions" of fish had perished in the Darling River close to the small town of Menindee.

Earlier,&nbsp;fish fatalities were reported&nbsp;in the same region&nbsp;in 2018 and 2019. About a&nbsp;million fish had&nbsp;died&nbsp;due to inadequate water flow, poor water quality, and abrupt temperature fluctuations.&nbsp;

“It’s horrific really, there’s dead fish as far as you can see,” Menindee resident Graeme McCrabb told AFP news agency. “It’s surreal to comprehend.&nbsp;The environmental impact is unfathomable,” he added.

With a population of 500, Menindee has been devastated by floods and drought in recent years. According to the state authorities, populations of fish such as bony herring and carp had exploded in the river after previous floods, but they were now rapidly declining as the floodwaters retreated.

A Dutch-fishing vessel, the world’s second-biggest fishing trawler, dumped more than 100,000 dead fish into the Atlantic Ocean off the French coast, sending shockwaves across the country.

France fisheries minister Annick Girardin said the images were shocking and that there would be an investigation to find out whether the incident was deliberate.

The spill, which took place in early Thursday, was caused by a tear in the trawler’s net, said fishing industry group Pelagic Freezer-Trawler Association (PFA), which represents the vessel's owner.

In a statement, the group called the spill a “very rare occurrence”.

Environmental activists have often criticised such trawlers for using drag nets for more than a kilometre long and processing the fish in onboard factories.

The dumped fish were blue whiting, a sub-species of cod, which is used by the industry to mass-produce fish fingers, fish oil and meal.

The French arm of campaign group Sea Shepherd first published images of the spill, showing the ocean's surface covered by a 3,000 sq m.

Environmental activists who spotted the fish described it as a “floating carpet of carcasses”.

Sea Shepherd France, a non-profit, marine conservation activism organization, said it did not believe that the incident was accidental, reported The Guardian.

The organisation claimed that the trawler deliberately discharged the fish as it did not want to process, a practice known as discharging bycatch which is banned under EU fishing rules.

Piles of garbage drifted in the lake near the dead fish. Swarms of flies spread near the reservoir and thousands of fish were decomposing in already dirty waters.

"This phenomenon appeared on the shore of the lake several days ago," said Ahmad Askar, a local activist. "The fish started floating up, and in abnormal quantities...It`s unacceptable."

At least 40 tonnes have turned up dead in a few days, numbers which Askar and fishermen in Qaraoun described as unprecedented. They called on the Litani river authority to find the cause and go after anyone dumping wastewater into the lake.

The river authority said this week that the fish were toxic and carried a virus, urging people to avoid fishing all along the Litani due to "an aggravated disaster that threatens public health".

The pollution prompted a ban since 2018 on fishing in the reservoir, which was created in 1959 with a large dam to collect water for hydropower and irrigation.

Last month, volunteers removed clumps of sticky tar from some beaches along the Lebanese coast after an oil spill which environmentalists warned would harm marine life.
