England batter Dawid Malan has announced his retirement from international cricket as he dropped the curtains on his illustrious career on Wednesday (Aug 28). Having represented England in all three formats, he retires with a unique distinction of having scored a hundred in both white-ball and red-ball cricket. His last international appearance was at the ODI World Cup in India in 2023 and was since overlooked for the international set-up.

Having busted on the scene late in his career, Malan made his debut in June 2017 when he was 30. He got rewarded for his excellent form during the South Africa series as he made his Test debut. He was part of the England squad during the Ashes in 2017 in Australia and was the fourth-best batter during the tour. Despite his excellent run in the T20I and Test format, it was not until 2019 that he was handed an ODI cap.

However, he missed out on England’s squad for the 2019 ODI World Cup, where Eoin Morgan’s side emerged victorious. Till 2021, he played his second ODI match, thereby, limiting his stay in the ODI set-up.

Malan, however, did not miss out on glory at the T20 World Cup in 2022, where England were relentless and won the tournament Down Under. Malan was also the World No. 1 T20I batter during his purple patch. Malan represented England in 22 Tests, 30 ODIs and 62 T20Is and is one of only two England men's batters (alongside Jos Buttler) to have scored centuries in all three international formats.

Despite playing in 22 Tests for the national team, he regretted not being a regular in the Test team under the captaincy of Joe Root and Alastair Cook.

"Test cricket was always the pinnacle for me growing up," he said. "At times I played well but in between just wasn't good enough or consistent enough, which was disappointing because I felt I was a better player than that.”

Malan is doubtful for the semi-final against Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. as his injury is a bad one, as per teammate Moeen Ali.

Malan has so far scored only 56 runs in the tournament this year and has not looked in the best of form but he possesses the ability to change a game single-handedly on his day. He is likely to be replaced by Phil Salt if he fails to recover from his injury in time.
