Following Heap's arrest in 2019 and the scandal that ensued, UCLA decided to&nbsp;pay out over $700 million to his hundreds of patients&nbsp;for the settlements.&nbsp;

However, the doctor was not found guilty of seven of the 21 counts, the LA jury remained deadlock for eight others. Further more, Heaps pleaded not guilty to 21 counts in the 2009-2018 sexual abuse of seven women.&nbsp;

During Heap's 35 year tenure, his patients said he touched them inappropriately made sexual provocative remarks and even performed unceccesary exams.&nbsp;

On of the woman who filed the cases said that the university disregard their complaints and tried to cover up the situation all these years.&nbsp;

Accoridng to attorneys. the university confirmed receiving a sexual abuse report in the year 2017. The university then initiated an inquiry following, which found that the doctor was sexually harassing. But he kept working till 2018 till his retirement, AP reported.&nbsp;

He was charged with several charges of sxual battery through deception, sexual exploitation last year. Despite being charged in relation to sexual battery, exploitation and penetration, he was still not found guilty but the jury remained deadlock for the counts.&nbsp;

November 17 is the date set for his sentence.&nbsp;

The $700 million paid in the lawsuit is a record sum for any public institution to pay.

To paint a cumulative picture, the Times has reported that the rate of homicides is up by 21.8 per cent in 38 major American cities. However, the rate of other crimes like theft has gone down.

Post-pandemic fears?

This may reflect the reality of a post-pandemic world, with fear-ridden people succumbing to crime. Besides street crime, the whole world has witnessed a spike in domestic violence in the aftermath of the virus, which induced lockdowns around the globe. Helplines have received a lot of calls!

A shooting at a crowded house party has left 13 people wounded, and police in Connecticut are investigating what they said is an unusual outburst of violence in the state&#39;s largest city. 
 
Bridgeport police believe two shooters opened fire on about 100 party-goers from behind some hedges surrounding the house&#39;s backyard. It happened around 1.30 am (local time) yesterday. 
 
Responding officers discovered what authorities called a chaotic scene. The party was so crowded that some people believed the gunshots were fireworks, captain Brian Fitzgerald said at a news conference yesterday afternoon. 
 
Police have stepped up patrols in the area and are gathering information from witnesses and from the victims. Police have not identified a motive and are investigating whether the suspects were party-goers, Fitzgerald said. 
 
&quot;We are going to have an arrest in the very near future,&quot; chief Armando J Perez said. 
 
As of yesterday afternoon, all but five of the victims had been released from hospitals. Most of the victims were shot in the legs. None of the injuries is considered life-threatening, but one woman was in critical condition with injuries to her face and jaw, according to authorities. 
 
Police said the victims ranged in age from about 18 to 24. 
 
The people who threw the party have not been identified by police. They had requested a permit from police ahead of the gathering because they wanted to sell alcohol there, but the permit was denied, according to Perez. 
 
Police believe they charged for alcohol anyway. They may face criminal charges, Fitzgerald said. 
 
Authorities are asking that anyone with information contact the Bridgeport police.
