The study found that the production capacity of the vaccines developed by AstraZeneca, Gamaleya/Sputnik, Moderna, Pfizer and Sinovac is 5.9 billion doses, which it said is enough for the global population of about 3 million, considering two shots to one individual will be enough.

It said, developed countries and regions, including the US, the UK, European Union, Australia, Hong Kong and Macau, Japan, Switzerland and Israel have notched deals for 2.7 billion (51 per cent) doses out of the total 5.3 billion doses so far.

The remaining 2.6 billion doses have been signed by developing countries, which include India, Bangladesh, China, Brazil, Indonesia and Mexico.

The United States health officials said on Thursday that the country would ensure distributing free coronavirus vaccine once the drug is proven effective.

"We are not at all reducing the regulatory rigour with which we will evaluate and hopefully approve vaccines," said Paul Mango, a senior health department official to reporters, as quoted by news agency AFP.

The US officials, though, continued their scepticism towards what Russia earlier this week declared as world's first COVID-19 vaccine.

"I hope that the Russians have actually definitively proven that the vaccine is safe and effective, but I seriously doubt that they've done that," said Anthony Fauci, the infectious disease.

A potential Chinese vaccine to treat novel coronavirus has shown promise in animals trials, triggering an immune system, a peer-reviewed study found.

ARCoV is developed using technology similar to other COVID-19 vaccine candidates: Moderna and BioNtech and Pfizer.

The trials in monkeys and mice, published in the medical journal Cell on Thursday, found both single and two-dose inoculations triggered strong antibody and T-cell responses against many COVID-19-causing virus strains.

However, the study couldn't find for how long the antibodies last or how effective their protection might be to other strains that cause coronavirus but were not tested in the study.

Researchers also said the drug is stable at 25°C (77°F) for at least a week, implying it could be easily ciruclated in hard-to-reach regions where cold-chain storage and transporation remain an issue.
