As the number of coronavirus cases continue to increase worldwide, Spain has turned an ice rink into a temporary morgue to deal with the ever-increasing number of cases in the country.

Spain’s “Ice Palace”, as it roughly translates into, is going to be the temporary place to hold corpses of people who perished in the face of COVID-19 pandemic. The bodies are being transported by the military unit of the country, CNN reported.

Touted as a temporary measure, the authorities claim that it was enforced to “lessen the pain” of the families of the victim, given the overwhelming situation in Madrid’s hospitals.

After China, Italy, and the US, Spain has recorded the highest number of coronavirus cases in the entire world, with the third highest tally of fatalities.

The major Spanish municipal body responsible for dealing with the corpses of coronavirus patients has announced that it will no longer collect bodies, for its workers no longer have protection gear against the virus.

However, other funeral services like burials and cremations would continue as usual, but that depends on how the bodies are sent. If the municipal body receives the body packed in a coffin, only then would they accept it.

The state of emergency was announced in Spain on March 13. The Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez had envisioned the emergency to last for 15 days, but given the increasing death rate, it will be extended for 14 more days.

Last week, Isabel Diaz Ayuso, the president of Madrid area claimed that she expects the city’s 80 per cent population to contract the virus.

She claimed that even though most people will experience only mild symptoms, the vulnerable population of the city, which accounts for 15 per cent may face harrowing difficulties.

The virus has brought not only Spain, but the whole world to standstill. Emergency makeshift hospitals have popped up across the country, with citizens being advised to not step out unless to buy essential supplies.

Recently, the government had directed old people to inform the authorities if there were any deceased people around them. This came amid rumours that a care home for old people in the country was unable to get rid of the corpses.

As of figures from today, more than 380,000 cases have been registered worldwide. Additionally, over 16,500 have died. The global tally of the recovered patients so far stands at 100,000.

According to the Spanish prime minister’s office, the country currently has over 39,673 confirmed cases of COVID-19. The virus has killed 2,696 people in the country.

As India is preparing to retrieve&nbsp;400 of its citizens from Iran in the coming days, diplomats at the Indian Mission in Iran are leaving no stone unturned to help stranded Indians. From Tehran to Qom city, Indian diplomats are reaching out to many Indians - from students to pilgrims stuck in the country in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

Sources in the Iranian Indian Mission&nbsp;told WION, "These are unusual times and the COVID-19 crisis is unprecedented in its scope and impact. We recognise that this requires that we put in all our efforts."

Adding, "We manage the enormous pressure we are under because we understand the gravity of the situation and we’re fully committed to helping each and every one of our people. All of us in the embassy are in good spirits and we back each other. "

Over 600 Indian nationals, including students, pilgrims and others, have been assisted and returned home.&nbsp;All Indians&nbsp;have been advised to restrict their movement.

The source further said, "Embassy officials worked tirelessly to make this happen. We are planning for the return of more pilgrims especially from Ladakh who are presently in Qom. This is a priority."

Qom is the epicentre of the crisis in the West Asian country. The Indian mission has been able to set up a quarantine centre in the city for the over 250 Indians infected with coronavirus, the largest such number anywhere outside India.&nbsp;

Explaining how Indian diplomats are reaching out to Indians in Qom, the source said, "In general, Mission’s officers are leading from the front and teams are deployed at&nbsp;various locations including the epicentre in Qom. We have in cooperation with the authorities in Qom, set up facilities for our pilgrims since lodges were ordered to close down. Government is bearing all the costs. We have also put in place help lines, advised and counselled people not to panic and to stay calm."

In Qom seminary students are helping Indian officials in rendering assistance to the stranded Indian pilgrims.

Asked about how diplomats are taking protection so that they don't get infected, the source said, "We do take care to adopt proper protection measures, take all precautions and bravely deal with the situation, day and night. Officers have made several visits to Qom, to meet local officials and comfort our citizens. We’ve been at this task without a break for over three weeks now. Our work goes on."

Iran is among the worst impacted countries in the world due to coronavirus outbreak. Since the first two cases were announced on February 19, the number of infected cases has gone up to over 23,000&nbsp;with over 1800 deaths.
