The bloodsucking pests' sudden resurgence in Japan follows reports of similar kind of outbreaks in countries like France and South Korea, which raised alarm among the people amid domestic and international travel rebounds after the coronavirus pandemic. 
 
Bedbugs, which are nearly 5 millimetres long and are stink bug's nocturnal relatives, hide in cracks and gaps in furniture during the day and come out at night to feed on humans. The bites of bedbugs lead to an allergic reaction in some people which results in intensely itchy welts.

The difficulties in detecting the tiny critters and the ability of the female to lay hundreds of eggs in her lifetime mean&nbsp;that infestations can spread easily if they hitch rides on belongings or clothing. 
 
Although bedbugs have been found in Japan since the late 19th century and also spread throughout the country at a given point in time, their numbers decreased sharply around 1970 due to the widespread use of potent insecticides. From the 2000s, however, some of the bugs started developing resistance to the insecticides. 
 
According to the Pest Control Association of Tokyo, the capital received nearly 306 bedbug-related consultations till November, which surpassed the 247 consultations they received in 2022.

<h2 lang="en-US">Consultations increased eight-fold in November: report</h2>

Tokyo-based insecticide manufacturer Earth Corp said that consultations regarding bedbugs increased eight-fold in November in comparison to the same period last year. 
 
Meanwhile, Osaka received 307 consultations till the end of November which is nearly 50 per cent more than last year. After a report regarding the spread of bedbugs in the Osaka Metro circulated on social media emerged in late November, it prompted its operator to clean all 1,380 of its trains.

President of the Japan Society of Medical Entomology and Zoology and a professor of dermatology at Hyogo Medical University Masaru Natsuaki said that bedbug infestations have been occurring even outside urban areas, as reported by the South China Morning Post. 
 
“[People are getting bitten] in various parts of the country, and nowhere can be considered safe. I want people to have the mindset that it can happen anywhere in the country,” said Natsuaki.

Iran nuke deal talks hit pause again as Tehran’s negotiator heads home for consultations

Russia said&nbsp;on&nbsp;Wednesday it had summoned its Washington envoy back to the country for consultations on its ties with the United States but stressed it wanted to prevent an&nbsp;'irreversible deterioration'&nbsp;in relations.&nbsp;

"The Russian ambassador in Washington, Anatoly Antonov, has been invited to come to Moscow for consultations conducted with the aim of&nbsp;analysing&nbsp;what should be done and where to go in the context of ties with the United States," the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.&nbsp;

The announcement came after President Joe Biden said Russia will&nbsp;'pay a price'&nbsp;for meddling in US elections and he agrees with the assessment that his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin is a&nbsp;'killer'.&nbsp;

The Biden's statement has come after a 15-page report, released by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence on Tuesday, claimed that the Russian President likely directed efforts to try and sabotage Biden's chances of winning the US election 2020 against Donald Trump.&nbsp;

"Putin had purview over the activities of Andriy Derkach," the report said. "Other senior officials also participated in Russia's election influence efforts - including senior national security and intelligence officials who we assess would not act without receiving at least Putin's tacit approval."&nbsp;

However, these claims were dismissed by Russia. "The document prepared by the US intelligence community is another set of groundless accusations against our country of interfering in American internal political processes. The conclusions of the report on Russia conducting influence operations in America are confirmed solely by the confidence of the intelligence services of their self-righteousness. No facts or specific evidence of such claims were provided,"&nbsp;the Russian Embassy in Washington said on Wednesday.&nbsp;

Immediately after Biden's statement, Russia's lower house of parliament denounced the US President for agreeing that Putin is a 'killer'. Claiming that attacks on Putin are attacks on Russia, State Duma speaker Vyacheslav Volodin wrote on his Telegram channel that "Biden insulted the citizens of our country with his statement".&nbsp;
