Search giant Google violated the patent rights of a software developer with its remote-streaming technology and needs to pay USD 338.7 million in damages, ruled a federal judge in Waco, Texas. The ruling was passed last week on Friday (July 21). The jury found that Google's Chromecast and other devices infringed patents which were owned by Touchstream Technologies relating to streaming videos from one screen to another, according to a court representative.

On Monday, Google spokesperson Jose Castaneda said that the company will appeal the verdict and has "always developed technology independently and competed on the merits of our ideas."

Reuters reported that Attorneys for New York-based Touchstream didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Touchstream, which also does business as Shodogg, said in its 2021 lawsuit that founder David Strober invented the technology in 2010 to "move" videos from a small device like a smartphone to a larger device like a television.

According to that complaint, Google met with Touchstream about its technology in December 2011 but it said after two months that it was not interested. Google launched Chromecast media-streaming devices in 2013.

Touchstream said that Google's Chromecast copied its innovations and infringed three of its patents. It also said its patents were infringed by Google's Home and Nest smart speakers and third-party televisions and speakers with Chromecast capabilities.

Google has denied infringing Touchstream's rights and has argued that the patents are invalid.

Touchstream filed similar complaints against cable providers Comcast, Charter and Altice in Texas earlier this year. Those cases are still pending.

<h2>Google's AI push</h2>

Going big on artificial intelligence tools to assist journalists, Google said last week that it was in talks with news organisations to use the tools. The spokespersons for Google did not give the names of the publishers. However, The New York Times reported that Google had held discussions with it along with Washington Post, News Corp and others.

These AI tools could assist journalists with options for headlines or different writing styles, for instance, in a way that "enhances their work and productivity," the Google spokesperson said, adding it was in the "earliest stages of exploring ideas".

"Quite simply these tools are not intended to, and cannot, replace the essential role journalists have in reporting, creating, and fact-checking their articles," the spokesperson said.

However, the NYT said that some executives who saw Google's pitch described it as unsettling. The report added that the executives asked not to be identified. The AI tool that was pitched is reportedly called Genesis.

Judge asks Google to pay USD 338.7 million in Chromecast patent case

Google has announced that it will no longer support YouTube on Echo Show and Amazon&rsquo;s Fire TV devices. The announcement comes just months after the company decided to withdraw support for YouTube on Echo Show.

Google&rsquo;s move irked a lot of Echo Show users in the US and Amazon had to resort to a workaround by redirecting users to the web version. Google now says even the web version of YouTube will stop working on&nbsp;Echo Show. The service will also become unavailable on Fire TV, where YouTube is a central part of the entire device experience.

YouTube will stop working on Echo Show starting today while Fire TV users will start a seeing a notification warning them that the service will become unavailable starting January 1.

Three months ago, Google decided to stop allowing Echo Show to access YouTube citing violation of terms of service. Google claimed Amazon&rsquo;s implementation of YouTube on Echo Show offers a broken experience and violates its design guidelines. Amazon said there is no technical reason for this move and stopped selling Google-owned Nest&rsquo;s Thermostat, Camera IQ and Secure alarm system.

&ldquo; We&rsquo;ve been trying to reach agreement with Amazon to give consumers access to each other&rsquo;s products and services. But Amazon doesn&rsquo;t carry Google products like Chromecast and Google Home, doesn&rsquo;t make Prime Video available for Google Cast users, and last month stopped selling some of Nest&rsquo;s latest products. Given this lack of reciprocity, we are no longer supporting YouTube on Echo Show and FireTV. We hope we can reach an agreement to resolve these issues soon,&rdquo; a YouTube spokesperson said announcing the end of support.

Google wants Amazon to customise YouTube to show options like autoplay, video recommendation and subscription on Echo Show and by dropping support for Fire TV, the search giant hopes Amazon will adhere to its design guidelines. Google is also&nbsp;rumoured&nbsp;to be working on its own Echo Show competitor offering better integration with YouTube. Amazon has not commented on YouTube&rsquo;s end of support for Echo Show and Fire TV yet but it is likely to affect consumers more than these tech giants.
