The Amsterdam municipality plans to phase out approximately 1,280 Chinese-made surveillance camera installations, currently being used to monitor traffic and public spaces.

This phase-out operation will take place within five years.

Suppliers will be specifically asked to provide non-Chinese camera systems.

Alexander Scholtes, the councillor for ICT and Digital City in Amsterdam, said: "We are also sending a strong signal to the market to find alternatives to Chinese camera systems".&nbsp;

This decision follows a growing apprehension that surveillance equipment from Chinese companies could transmit images to the manufacturer or the government in Beijing. Notably, Chinese firms Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology Co. and Zhejiang Dahua Technology Co. have been accused by US officials of participating in human rights violations against the Uyghur minority in China.

<h2>Other countries that have removed Chinese cameras</h2>

Amsterdam's move comes after similar actions taken by the UK and Australian governments, which have removed Chinese-made surveillance technology from sensitive government and defence sites.&nbsp;

Earlier this year, the Netherlands' Military Intelligence and Security Service disclosed a Chinese espionage campaign in the country involving advanced malware.

While the immediate replacement of all Chinese cameras is cost-prohibitive, Amsterdam's coalition government, including the mayor and aldermen, as per NL Times, plans to implement new contract conditions that consider human rights criteria when purchasing camera systems.&nbsp;

Municipal departments will now seek alternatives to Chinese cameras, assessing feasibility and costs on a case-by-case basis, with the goal of replacing all current Chinese cameras within five years.

Amsterdam to remove Chinese-made cameras over espionage and human rights concerns

The military of Canada recently found evidence of Chinese surveillance in the Arctic. Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail first reported about the discovery, raising questions about the activities of China in the far north.

The discovery comes in the wake of the United States’ recent allegations against China of sending spy balloons into the US and Canada’s airspace. China has also faced accusations of interference in the Canadian elections. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Last fall, the Canadian military discovered monitoring buoys as part of Operation Limpid, which is the Canadian military’s ongoing mission tasked with identifying threats to the security of the country by surveilling land, sea and air domains.

Canadian Department of National Defence’s spokesperson Daniel Le Bouthillier, in a statement, said, “The Department of National Defence and Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) are fully aware of recent efforts by China to conduct surveillance operations in Canadian airspace and maritime approaches utilising dual-purpose technologies.”

“Under Operation LIMPID, the CAF monitors Canada’s air, land and sea approaches, and since 2022, it has stopped attempts to surveil Canadian territory,” he added. 
Bouthillier did not elaborate on what was discovered. “To ensure the integrity of operations, we are unable to provide further information at this time,” he said.

Retired lieutenant-general Michael Day said that China may have used buoys to monitor the traffic of US nuclear submarines in the Arctic and for mapping ice thickness and seabeds.

According to a report, Internet of Things(IoT) devices in Chinese companies pose&nbsp;a new threat even as the UK’s moved to ban Huawei from its 5G telecoms networks.

A report in The Financial Times said three Chinese manufacturers hold over 50 per cent share of the global market of cellular IoT modules. The report added that "Quectel, Fibocom&nbsp;and China Mobile" provide "modules to a number of Chinese companies including Huawei, Hikvision and DJI". The companies are currently under the European and US radar.

British lawmakers have sought to ban sales of CCTV supplied by China's Hikvision and Dahua which allegedly provide ethnicity profiling tools in Xinjiang. A campaign group in the UK claimed several CCTV systems in the NHS Trust used the services of Hikvision and Dahua. Big Brother Watch alleged that Hikvision and Dahua were "closely linked to the genocide in Xinjiang" while adding that "Chinese state-owned CCTV has no place watching Britain’s streets."

Reports claim Hikvision and Dahua have already been banned in the US over security concerns. The UK lawmakers have called for a complete ban on Hikvision and Dahua over surveillance capabilities which include facial recognition, person tracking and gender identification calling it a "threat to civil liberties" in the UK.

Hikvision CCTV cameras have also become the centre of controversy in New Zealand. However, the company has denied claims it is involved in ethnic profiling and said sanctions in the US and allegations in the UK were "unverified".
